UTP Leaps In Times Higher Education Asia Rankings, Maintains Top Spot In Malaysia
KUALA LUMPUR, April 24 (Bernama) -- Universiti Teknologi PETRONAS (UTP) has reached a new milestone in its journey towards becoming a world-class institution, breaking into the Top 50 for the first time in the latest edition of the Times Higher Education Asia University Rankings.
UTP, in a statement, said it is now the highest-ranked Malaysian university, securing the 43rd position, up from 52nd last year, while retaining its title as the number one university in Malaysia and private university in ASEAN.
Its vice chancellor, Prof Datuk Dr Mohamed Ibrahim Abdul Mutalib, said the recognition reflects UTP's continuous commitment to academic excellence, impactful research and global collaboration.
'This achievement is a testament to the relentless drive of our staff, students and partners to push boundaries in research, innovation and education. We are immensely proud to represent Malaysia on the regional and global stage,' he was quoted as saying in the statement today.

The statement added that UTP's sharp rise reflects its growing impact in multidisciplinary research, industry partnerships and academic excellence.
Mohamed Ibrahim said UTP's next phase would focus on solving real-world challenges through deeper collaboration with global institutions, industries and governments.
'We are investing in frontier research, transdisciplinary programmes and digital-first learning experiences to ensure our graduates thrive in a world that's changing faster than ever,' he said.
UTP said its forward-looking initiatives include the Bachelor of Integrated Engineering with Honours programme, which is scheduled to commence in September this year.

Woodlands Checkpoint Upgrade To Maximise JS-SEZ Potential
By Nur Ashikin Abdul Aziz SINGAPORE, Aug 17 (Bernama) -- The redevelopment of Woodlands Checkpoint, to be expanded to five times its current size, will improve cross-border connectivity and maximise the potential of the Johor-Singapore Special Economic Zone (JS-SEZ). Singapore Prime Minister Lawrence Wong in his National Day Rally (NDR) speech said that the redevelopment will ensure more efficient and secure clearances, as well as shorter wait times and smoother traffic. bootstrap slideshow 'The SEZ has great potential for both sides to tap on complementary strengths and grow together. To maximise this potential, we must improve cross-border connectivity,' he said on Sunday. He said that today, the Causeway is the busiest land crossing in the world, which gets even more congested during weekends and holidays. To provide a long-term solution to this chronic congestion, the Immigration and Checkpoints Authority (ICA) had previously announced it was redeveloping and extending the Woodlands Checkpoint (WCP) in phases over the next 10 to 15 years. Under Phase 1, ICA will build an extension of WCP at the Old Woodlands Town Centre, with construction work for this phase scheduled for the third quarter of 2025. This extension, among others, will include new automated clearance facilities for cargo vehicles, arriving cars, and arriving motorcycles. Wong also informed that the Johor Bahru–Singapore Rapid Transit System (RTS) Link, which will connect directly to Woodlands North MRT Station in Singapore, is set to ease cross-border travel.

Chong Wei bowled over by detailed five-year BAM development plan
PETALING JAYA: It was never easy trying to lure Datuk Lee Chong Wei back into the fold of the Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM). For years since his 2019 retirement, the nation's greatest shuttler kept a respectful distance, politely turning down repeated offers to rejoin the body, preferring instead to contribute on his own terms. But on Saturday, BAM president Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Abdul Aziz finally achieved what no one else could. So what made him have a change of heart? It was the detailed blueprint called 'Tangkis 2030' that was unveiled by Tengku Zafrul during the council meeting on Saturday. The five-year plan covers BAM's ambitions, covering not just the elite squad but the entire badminton ecosystem. And it convinced him to return as an independent council member. 'To be honest, I was surprised at how detailed and long-term his plan is,' said Chong Wei when contacted. 'This is the first time I've seen a BAM president with such a roadmap. In less than 100 days, he's presented a clear vision, and I can see he is sincere about lifting Malaysian badminton. ALSO READ: Boon Heong: BAM must give Chong Wei more power "Even while still serving as Miti (Investment, Trade and Industry Ministry) Minister until the end of the year, he has worked hard to put this plan together and engaged with all stakeholders to ensure his vision can be carried out 'That is why I've agreed to use my knowledge and experience to help him and Malaysian badminton,' said the 41-year-old legend. 'In the past, many people had asked me to come back to BAM, but I feel that the plan drawn up by Tengku Zafrul is one that covers many aspects," said Chong Wei. 'Tangkis 2030' is built around five key missions: reclaiming the Thomas Cup by 2026, winning Olympic gold at Los Angeles 2028, producing world No. 1s in at least three events, ensuring a sustainable pipeline of champions, and driving badminton as a pillar of a healthier Malaysia. A flagship programme, 'Road to Thomas Cup', targets ending Malaysia's 34-year drought in Horsens, Denmark, next year. To strengthen BAM's foundations, Zafrul has also roped in three other heavyweights: former NTV7 and Celcom CEO Datuk Seri Shazalli Ramly (branding and marketing), Tan Sri Gooi Hoe Soon (finance), and Datuk Sunil Abraham (legal).
