Chong Wei bowled over by detailed five-year BAM development plan
For years since his 2019 retirement, the nation's greatest shuttler kept a respectful distance, politely turning down repeated offers to rejoin the body, preferring instead to contribute on his own terms.
But on Saturday, BAM president Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Abdul Aziz finally achieved what no one else could.
So what made him have a change of heart?
It was the detailed blueprint called 'Tangkis 2030' that was unveiled by Tengku Zafrul during the council meeting on Saturday.
The five-year plan covers BAM's ambitions, covering not just the elite squad but the entire badminton ecosystem. And it convinced him to return as an independent council member.
'To be honest, I was surprised at how detailed and long-term his plan is,' said Chong Wei when contacted.
'This is the first time I've seen a BAM president with such a roadmap. In less than 100 days, he's presented a clear vision, and I can see he is sincere about lifting Malaysian badminton.

"Even while still serving as Miti (Investment, Trade and Industry Ministry) Minister until the end of the year, he has worked hard to put this plan together and engaged with all stakeholders to ensure his vision can be carried out
'That is why I've agreed to use my knowledge and experience to help him and Malaysian badminton,' said the 41-year-old legend.
'In the past, many people had asked me to come back to BAM, but I feel that the plan drawn up by Tengku Zafrul is one that covers many aspects," said Chong Wei.
'Tangkis 2030' is built around five key missions: reclaiming the Thomas Cup by 2026, winning Olympic gold at Los Angeles 2028, producing world No. 1s in at least three events, ensuring a sustainable pipeline of champions, and driving badminton as a pillar of a healthier Malaysia.
A flagship programme, 'Road to Thomas Cup', targets ending Malaysia's 34-year drought in Horsens, Denmark, next year.
To strengthen BAM's foundations, Zafrul has also roped in three other heavyweights: former NTV7 and Celcom CEO Datuk Seri Shazalli Ramly (branding and marketing), Tan Sri Gooi Hoe Soon (finance), and Datuk Sunil Abraham (legal).

Nearly 47,000 EV, hybrid, BEV units sold in 2024, says Miti
KUALA LUMPUR: The sales of electrified vehicles (xEV), hybrid and battery electric vehicles (BEV) reached a total of 46,403 units last year, the Dewan Rakyat was told. Deputy International Trade and Industry Minister (Miti) Liew Ching Tong said this was an increase compared to 35,723 units in 2023. 'The increase of xEV sales, specifically BEV, is backed by the development of charging facilities across the country,' said Liew in Parliament on Monday (Aug 18). Liew also said that new car sales in Malaysia last year recorded 816,747 units, surpassing the 800,000 mark for the first time. 'This places Malaysia in second place in Asean for the passenger vehicle market. 'This reflects the confidence of users and this strengthens the participation of local vendors,' said Liew. Liew was responding to Dr Siti Mastura Muhammad (PN-Kepala Batas), who asked about the current automotive policy and the country's strategies in boosting vehicle sales. Liew said the National Automotive Policy (NAP) 2020 is currently going through an in depth mid-term review by Miti and the Malaysia Automotive, Robotics and IoT Institute (MARii). 'In this study, we take into account the current situation where new technology is used widely, such as EV and energy efficient vehicles (EEV),' said Liew. Liew said NAP 2020 is the latest policy that charts the direction of the national automotive industry. 'Its main goal is to make Malaysia a regional automotive hub that is based on technology and innovation. 'This review involves thorough engagement sessions with industry players, policy makers, and related agencies to ensure that this policy is in line with the current needs of the market and the development of the global technology,' added Liew.

Proton's first EV plant in Tanjung Malim nearly ready, production to begin September
KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 18 — Proton Holdings Bhd said its new electric vehicle (EV) manufacturing plant in Tanjung Malim is almost complete, with full-scale production scheduled to start in September. In a press release today, Proton said the facility, built within its high-tech compound, has reached 90.4 per cent completion just six months after its groundbreaking in February. Equipment installation is at 83.5 per cent, bringing overall progress to 86.9 per cent. The first model off the line will be the Proton 7, touted as the country's first EV from a Malaysian automotive brand, followed by the 5, an entry-level EV currently on a nationwide roadshow. The plant was designed for scalability, with initial production capacity of 20,000 units annually that can be expanded to 45,000 units depending on demand in Malaysia and overseas markets. It features flexible assembly lines, modular tester systems and optimised logistics for both domestic and export sales. Wan Yousry Mohamed, Proton's head of manufacturing engineering, said the company had completed a machine trial run of its first car body and was in the final stages of equipment calibration ahead of the production launch. 'This trial run is to continuously check on our equipment readiness. We are now in the final stages of preparing the zones for installation and integration. All calibration and validation activities will be carried out progressively to ensure we are fully prepared,' he said. To date, Proton has recruited over 30 non-executive workers with Malaysian Skills Certificate and diploma qualifications, with plans to add more than 200 jobs in EV industrialisation and technical services for the local community. The company is also partnering with Polytechnic Sultan Azlan Shah to align technical training with industry requirements. The plant incorporates dedicated areas for EV-specific needs such as battery assembly, high-voltage safety and electrical testing. Proton said its Chinese partner Geely has provided expertise in production systems, equipment selection and staff training to ensure the facility meets global standards. 'This plant symbolises Proton's transformation and our commitment to a sustainable, high-tech future,' Wan Yousry said, adding that the company aims to position Malaysia as a leader in the regional EV sector.
