Nearly 47,000 EV, hybrid, BEV units sold in 2024, says Miti
Deputy International Trade and Industry Minister (Miti) Liew Ching Tong said this was an increase compared to 35,723 units in 2023.
'The increase of xEV sales, specifically BEV, is backed by the development of charging facilities across the country,' said Liew in Parliament on Monday (Aug 18).
Liew also said that new car sales in Malaysia last year recorded 816,747 units, surpassing the 800,000 mark for the first time.
'This places Malaysia in second place in Asean for the passenger vehicle market.
'This reflects the confidence of users and this strengthens the participation of local vendors,' said Liew.
Liew was responding to Dr Siti Mastura Muhammad (PN-Kepala Batas), who asked about the current automotive policy and the country's strategies in boosting vehicle sales.
Liew said the National Automotive Policy (NAP) 2020 is currently going through an in depth mid-term review by Miti and the Malaysia Automotive, Robotics and IoT Institute (MARii).
'In this study, we take into account the current situation where new technology is used widely, such as EV and energy efficient vehicles (EEV),' said Liew.
Liew said NAP 2020 is the latest policy that charts the direction of the national automotive industry.
'Its main goal is to make Malaysia a regional automotive hub that is based on technology and innovation.
'This review involves thorough engagement sessions with industry players, policy makers, and related agencies to ensure that this policy is in line with the current needs of the market and the development of the global technology,' added Liew.

Loss of interest main reason behind teachers' early retirement

(Bernama pic) KUALA LUMPUR : A total of 19,179 primary and secondary school teachers opted for early retirement between 2022 and May this year, with most citing a loss of interest in teaching. Deputy education minister Wong Kah Woh told the Dewan Rakyat that 5,306 teachers retired early in 2022, followed by 6,394 in 2023, 5,082 in 2024, and 2,397 as of May 2025. Wong said a loss of interest in teaching was cited by 67.44% of teachers in their applications for optional early retirement. This was followed by family problems (17.43%), health problems (7.69%), workload (5.37%) and personal problems (2.08%). He said the ministry conducts permanent teacher recruitment twice a year, while the Education Service Commission keeps its teacher application system open year-round to speed up recruitment and placement. He was responding to a question from Mas Ermieyati Samsudin (PN–Masjid Tanah) on the number of teachers who chose early retirement between 2022 and 2024, and the measures taken by the ministry to address teacher shortages. Wong said the ministry had outlined seven measures aimed at reducing teachers' workload, including scrapping low-impact school events and appointing members of the public as examination invigilators. He also said the ministry had introduced teaching assistants at schools with more than 1,500 students to help reduce teachers' administrative workload. Wong said 282 schools had been assigned two teaching assistants, with plans to expand the programme to other schools.

Govt to draft new act for early childhood education in 13MP
KUALA LUMPUR: The Education Ministry will draft a new Act on early childhood education to ensure comprehensive and effective regulatory oversight, said Education Minister Fadhlina Sidek. Speaking in the Dewan Rakyat, she said that as part of efforts to enhance educational outcomes, the government, under the 13th Malaysia Plan, will introduce a comprehensive transformation that addresses every level of learning. "In the context of early childhood education, a new Act will be drafted to ensure comprehensive and effective regulatory oversight," he said in her winding-up speech on the 13th Malaysia Plan. When tabling the 13th Malaysia Plan, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said the government will make preschool education compulsory from the age of five to enhance educational outcomes. Fadhlina added that she echoed Datuk Seri Saifuddin Abdullah (PN-Indera Mahkota)'s suggestion for preschool curriculum to be developed based on the developmental needs of children. She said the ministry would introduce the Preschool Curriculum 2026, which will be anchored in the School Curriculum Framework 2027. "This curriculum emphasises character building, self-confidence, values of compassion, and resilience through experiential approaches that are age-appropriate. "Accordingly, the national preschool curriculum will be made mandatory for all early childhood education institutions, with emphasis on human dignity (karamah insaniah), character development, critical thinking, and life skills. "To ensure its successful implementation, mastery of this curriculum will be prioritised," she added. She added that the ministry has also expanded access to preschool and leveraged on all available spaces, including in secondary schools, Teachers' Education Institute (IPG), vocational colleges, among others. "The priority is to ensure that parents and the community are encouraged and made aware of the importance of preschool education. "We also see that the new 2026 preschool curriculum is very important," she said. She added that under the 13th Malaysia Plan, the government will establish a National Education Council (NEC) tasked with coordinating, monitoring, and recommending strategic interventions. She said the ministry, along with the Higher Education Ministry, is working closely to prepare a Joint Cabinet Memorandum, which is expected to be tabled in mid-September 2025. In terms of membership, she said, the NEC will comprise representatives from various ministries, government agencies, academia, industry, NGOs, and GLCs to ensure that decisions made are inclusive. "The establishment of the NEC will serve to coordinate and monitor the implementation of policies, as well as to identify appropriate intervention measures to ensure that the education system remains relevant and effective," she said.
