#SHOWBIZ: Forward-thinking move for FFM34

THE 34th Malaysian Film Festival (FFM34) is making history with the introduction of a new category: the Best Stunt Performance Award.
This marks a significant step in recognising the courageous and dedicated individuals who bring Malaysia's action film scenes to life.
Deputy Communicatons Minister Teo Nie Ching announced the new category at a press conference recently held at the National Film Development Corporation of Malaysia (Finas) in Hulu Kelang, Selangor.
"The Best Stunt Performance award is dedicated to the people who often remain behind the scenes but play a crucial role in the success of high-risk scenes.
"Their courage, discipline, and professionalism deserve recognition and celebration."
Teo emphasised that the decision to introduce this category stems from a noticeable rise in local action film production, reflecting the growing strength and maturity of Malaysia's film industry.
"The recent surge in action film production shows that our industry is not only advancing technically but also winning over audiences.
"The increasing popularity and viewership of local action and horror films prove their rising quality," she added.
According to Teo, the award will shine a spotlight on stunt performers, technical teams, and behind-the-scenes crew, whose efforts and risks breathe life into some of cinema's most thrilling scenes.
"This category was created to honour the incredible spirit and professionalism of stunt actors and the technical teams who work tirelessly, often at great physical risk, to bring dynamic and complex scenes to the screen.
"Their contributions are invaluable and should not go unnoticed," she said.
The winner of the award will receive a special trophy and a RM5,000 cash prize as a token of appreciation for outstanding dedication and contribution to the Malaysian film industry.
FFM34 director Raja Mohammad Adhzim Raja Ahmad also shared that a total of 30 categories will be contested at this year's festival, covering a wide spectrum of cinematic achievements.
"Entries eligible for this year are local productions released between July 1, 2024, and June 30, 2025."
FFM34 will be held on Nov 8 at Auditorium Seri Angkasa in Kota Media Angkasapuri, Kuala Lumpur, and will be broadcast live nationwide.
The festival is organised by Finas, in collaboration with the Communications Ministry, and continues to serve as the most prestigious platform for honouring cinematic excellence in Malaysia.
This year's edition carries the theme, "Creative Works, Dynamic Cinema", chosen to reflect the evolving landscape of Malaysian storytelling and the bold steps filmmakers are taking to push boundaries and embrace innovation.
"This year's theme represents cinema as a mirror to modern society, one that keeps pace with technological development and social realities," said Raja Mohammad Adhzim.
"It celebrates the dynamism of our film industry and the creative bravery of those who dare to explore new frontiers in storytelling."
The 2025 edition of FFM is expected to feature over 60 Malaysian films, underscoring the resilience, commitment, and creative momentum of the country's film industry, which continues to thrive despite the lingering impact of the Covid-19 pandemic.
Adding further prestige to the event, FFM34 will include notable special awards, such as the Box Office Film Special Award, the Special Jury Award, and the Lifetime Achievement Award, all of which honour extraordinary contributions and long-standing service to the local film scene.
According to FFM34 organisers, as of June 30, the performance of the Malaysian film industry continues to be highly encouraging.
A total of 39 local films have been screened across cinemas nationwide, amassing a combined box office revenue of RM162.89 million.
This is a notable increase compared with the RM125.28 million collected in 2024.
This surge reflects not only the public's growing interest in locally produced content but also the industry's strengthening infrastructure, creative ambition, and technical expertise — all key to positioning Malaysia as a major player in the global cinematic landscape.
With the introduction of the Best Stunt Performance Award, FFM34 solidifies its role as a forward-thinking festival that continues to evolve in recognising the full spectrum of artistic and technical excellence in Malaysian cinema.

(Video) DOLLA & KIIRAS Team Up For 'MWA' & 'ZILLER' Dance Challenges

Newly debuted K-pop girl group KIIRAS (키라스) received a warm welcome during their first visit to Malaysia. The trip also marked a special homecoming for leader Ling Ling (링링/黃羚棱), who hails from Klang. In addition to performing at their first international showcase during 'The Music Journey 2 Roadshow', the group took part in several activities, including meeting fashion designer Peony Sin Hui Wen (萧惠玟) and filming a dance challenge in front of their billboard in Bukit Bintang. Speaking of dance challenges, the girls also delighted fans by performing DOLLA's 'MWA' challenge during a recent stage appearance. So, it was only natural for them to do it again, this time with the artists themselves while they were still in town. Watch the collaboration below: Yesterday (Wednesday, 6th August), DOLLA and KIIRAS shared a video on Instagram of themselves doing the former's 'MWA' dance challenge. The clip was filmed at a futsal court, though the exact location was not disclosed. The two groups were divided into trios, with 2 KIIRAS members paired with 1 DOLLA member in each group. Luckily for fans, the two groups didn't just do 1 but 2 dance challenges, with DOLLA taking part in KIIRAS' 'ZILLER' dance challenge with the members. Fans were delighted by the collaboration, as it also helped shine a spotlight on more Malaysian talent on the global stage. While many were excited to see the two girl groups teaming up, Ling Ling also took part in a special collaboration of her own. On the same day, KIIRAS shared a video on their official Instagram account of their leader taking on the 'KILL MA BO$$' dance challenge with her sunbaenim, Isaac Voo (邬凯名/아이젝), a fellow Malaysian and K-pop idol from the boy group SKYE. Fun fact: Both Isaac and Ling Ling are known as the first male and female Malaysian K-pop idols, respectively. With Ling Ling leading KIIRAS, fans are hopeful for future musical collaborations with DOLLA, SKYE, or other Malaysian artists. There's no doubt that such projects have the potential to break records and make history. Kota Kinabalu: Music teacher, Stefanus Lucas, from SK Pendidikan Khas (P) Kota Kinabalu was recently recognised with Malaysia's top educator honour for his work with special needs students. He was awarded the RISE Educator Award 2025, earning RM5, 000 personally and securing RM50, 000 in funding for his school. Advertisement The award, organised by Taylor's College, celebrates educators making exceptional impact in Malaysian classrooms. Working with visually and hearing-impaired students, Stefanus has revolutionised music education by establishing a specialised music room and forming a student boy band despite limited resources. His innovative approach gives students with disabilities a platform to express themselves and build confidence through music. 'To many, music may seem like a luxury but to my students, it is a lifeline,' said Stefanus. Advertisement 'It is how they express emotions, connect with others and begin to believe in their own worth,' he added. The competition drew over 1,000 nominations nationwide and attracted more than 65,000 public votes. Five finalists were selected through a combination of public voting and evaluation by a distinguished panel including officials from the Ministry of Education. Stefanus plans to use the funding to create Sabah's first student ensemble combining traditional and modern instruments, and to build a dedicated music space for deaf learners. School headmaster Muhammad Hamka Eallie praised Stefanus's work, saying he has transformed how the school views learning and inclusion. 'He does not see their disabilities but rather he sees their potential,' said Hamka. The award ceremony was graced by Deputy Educational Resources and Technology Division Director Fadzliaton Zainudin at the Ministry of Education Malaysia, who delivered a keynote address to commemorate the occasion. 'Taylor's College has consistently championed quality education by recognising and supporting the incredible efforts of educators on the ground. 'The RISE Educator Award highlights how real change often starts with small, consistent acts of care and dedication,' she said. She said Ministry of Education commends Taylor's College for establishing a platform that goes beyond recognising outstanding educators but one that also fosters collaboration, inspires innovation and encourages the exchange of impactful practices that uplift our schools and communities. Meanwhile, Taylor's College Campus Director Josephine Tan said that over the past five years, the RISE Educator Award has revealed the remarkable resilience and creativity of teachers who quietly transform the meaning of education. 'These educators do not wait for ideal conditions, they create opportunities with what they have. What drives them is not just innovation, but deep purpose and belief in their students. Many even fund their own projects, expecting little recognition in return,' she said. 'The RISE Educator Award has grown into more than just a reward, it is now a platform that brings educators, communities and change makers together to celebrate impact, exchange ideas and inspire one another. 'It reflects our belief that when we invest in educators, we are investing in the future and we are confident they will continue to spark even greater change,' she said, adding that the RISE Educator Award is more than a celebration but also a commitment to uplift and invest in educators who are changing lives. Since its inception, the RISE Educator Award has celebrated 18 educators and channelled more than RM200, 000 in grants and development support to schools across the country. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? Taiwan-based Malaysian singer Gary Chaw reportedly hasn't moved on from ex-wife: 'Still in pain'

It's been nearly three years since Malaysian singer Gary Chaw divorced Taiwanese fashion blogger Wu Shuling, but it seems he hasn't fully moved on. The 46-year-old recently shared on Xiaohongshu (Red Note) a video of himself singing his 2019 song I'm Just A Fool – a ballad in which he confronts his shortcomings and expresses his unconditional devotion. The post quickly drew attention, with many netizens praising Chaw's soulful vocals, while others shared how the performance evoked a deep sense of nostalgia. According to China Press, Chaw also left two comments about Wu under his video. The former couple, who divorced in November 2022 after 14 years of marriage, share two children – Joe, 16, and Grace, 14. 'I still haven't forgotten Shuling,' read one of the comments. 'Actually, I'm still in pain,' he wrote in another. It's reported that Chaw later deleted both comments mentioning Wu. This isn't the first time the singer has shown that he's still struggling to move on. In July 2023, Chaw made a series of Instagram posts about his ex-wife and their children – including a throwback wedding photo of him and Wu smiling blissfully. 'I'm messed up... But I still love her,' he wrote at that time. A few months later, while performing his song Zhang Wen during a concert in Taipei, Chaw altered the original lyric 'There is no winning or losing' to 'There is no Shuling'. 'I still love her… Taking it one step at a time,' he said back then.
