Malaysia proposes border committee to resolve Thailand-Cambodia conflict
Foreign Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan stated that if both parties agree, leaders should consider the committee's recommendations to de-escalate tensions.
He explained, 'This is because they both want the other side to apologise first, so I suggest that they use the General Border Committee mechanism... because each has its strength and they just don't want to give in.'
Mohamad made these remarks after officiating the Besut UMNO Division meeting in Jertih.
The minister confirmed he has been in contact with his counterparts, Thailand's Maris Sangiampongsa and Cambodia's Prak Sokhonn, urging an immediate ceasefire.
'I have asked them to stand down so that a ceasefire can be held as soon as possible, because the two countries are friends, neighbours and have long-standing family ties. We need to find a solution together through dialogue and diplomatic channels.'
Mohamad added that he would continue engaging with influential figures in both countries to facilitate discussions.
Meanwhile, Wisma Putra has issued a travel advisory, prohibiting Malaysians from visiting conflict zones near the Thai-Cambodian border. Malaysian embassies in Bangkok and Phnom Penh remain open for assistance.
Recent clashes between Thai and Cambodian troops have reignited tensions over the long-disputed 817-kilometre border.
The conflict escalated after a deadly incident in Preah Vihear in late May, resulting in a Cambodian soldier's death.
Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has also reached out to Cambodian and Thai leaders to express Malaysia's concerns. - Bernama

He said that while the ceasefire agreement marked a significant milestone, it was only the beginning of a longer process. "The ultimate goal is to reach a sustainable and lasting ceasefire, accepted and enforced by both sides. "The mechanism currently in place is crucial in ensuring that the monitoring process is smooth, transparent and effective. "More importantly, we believe what has happened reflects a genuine commitment from both governments, and the US will closely monitor this to ensure that commitment is sustained," he said. Kagan added that President Donald Trump placed the highest priority on the Thai-Cambodian conflict, believing that any form of war or confrontation would benefit no party. Malaysia, the US, and China were observers at today's Extraordinary GBC Meeting.

Malaysia to host GBC meeting in September on Thai-Cambodian ceasefire progress
KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia has agreed to convene the next General Border Committee (GBC) meeting in September to assess the progress of the ceasefire agreement between Thailand and Cambodia. The meeting is expected to be held within a month, in September. Home Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail said Malaysia believes the current bilateral mechanism used to resolve the conflict between the two countries is sufficient for the time being. "Everyone agrees that the bilateral mechanism currently in place is sufficient for now, while we also agree that there will be a next round at the level of the GBC meeting. "We are proud to play a role in this peace effort and appreciate the commitment and willingness of both countries' leaders," he said at a press conference today. The press conference followed the GBC meeting between Cambodian and Thai military leaders, after a series of joint working group sessions since Monday at Wisma Perwira. Among those present were Cambodian Defence Minister General Tea Seiha and Thailand's acting Defence Minister General Nattaphon Narkphanit. Also present were Deputy Defence Minister Adly Zahari, Defence Ministry secretary-general Datuk Lokman Hakim Ali and Malaysian Armed Forces chief General Tan Sri Mohd Nizam Jaffar. Saifuddin said Malaysia remains steadfast in providing the necessary support to both countries as a facilitator of dialogue, confidence-building, and practical mechanisms for ceasefire monitoring. He said Asean believes in resolving disputes through consensus, not confrontation, and based on trust, mutual respect, and the principle of non-interference. He said Cambodia and Thailand's commitment to implementing the ceasefire was a significant step that reflects the Asean spirit in resolving conflicts through dialogue and mutual understanding. "This is how we strengthen regional unity. It is this Asean spirit that guides us today and will continue to guide us in the future. "Today's discussions reflect the shared understanding that the ceasefire is not temporary, but a promise to protect lives, uphold dignity, and prevent further suffering," he said. He said the promise must be honoured through commitment, effective monitoring, and genuine political will from both sides.

Anwar says sports should serve as a unifying force among Malaysians of all backgrounds and must not be tainted by unruly or divisive conduct. – Bernama photo KUALA LUMPUR (Aug 7): Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has stressed that there is no room for hooliganism or violence in sports, particularly football, as such behaviour goes against the spirit of sportsmanship. He said sports should serve as a unifying force among Malaysians of all backgrounds and must not be tainted by unruly or divisive conduct. 'Everyone supports their team or their state or their province, but that does not allow them to create chaos and tolerate hooliganism. So we'll make a difference. Don't import that culture of hooliganism in sports as you read and see and watch on television from the experience of other countries,' he said in a speech during the groundbreaking ceremony of Olympic House here, today. Also present was Youth and Sports Minister Hannah Yeoh. Anwar said while passion in sports was natural, it should not be used to justify behaviour that contradicted the values of sportsmanship. 'People cry when they win and they cry when they lose. You know, which means you cannot deny the passion. But it does not warrant them to take actions which run contrary to the spirit of sportsmanship,' he said. He added that greater tolerance was needed, as 'intolerance runs contrary to the very spirit of sports — which is about bringing people together, embracing differences, and sharing a deep passion.' Anwar also highlighted the unique role of sportsmanship in uniting Malaysians across racial lines, noting that such values were often absent in politics. 'There's no language in politics for sportsmanship. Politics is where you kill one another — I mean, not literally, hopefully. But only in sports, not in culture, not in the arts, not in economic rivalry. 'But in sports, there is this term called sportsmanship, which essentially means you must work hard, try to excel and win — but also accept that the best man, woman, or team will win. And that is the spirit of sportsmanship,' he said. Reflecting on Malaysia's past, which was at times marked by racial antagonism, Anwar recalled how sports like football and badminton served as powerful unifying forces during those difficult periods. 'It doesn't matter whether he's Malay, Chinese, Dayak or Indian — we consider them all Malaysian. And that's what I feel we need to promote. But of course, we also need to excel. 'So everybody's waiting — under Hannah and now with Norza (Olympic Council of Malaysia President Tan Sri Mohamad Norza Zakaria) — where we expect at least one gold medal from the Olympics. Otherwise, they'll be in trouble,' he said jokingly. Sharing a personal anecdote, Anwar said he often advised his grandchildren, who sometimes got upset after losing in games like chess or football. 'I said, I told them that's not the spirit. The spirit of course, is to win, but the sportsmanship, the the term sportsmanship is such a value-laden term.
