Türkiye Finds New Natural Gas Reserve in Black Sea

Asharq Al-Awsat17-05-2025
Türkiye has discovered a new reserve of 75 billion cubic metres (bcm) of natural gas during drilling works in the Black Sea, President Tayyip Erdogan said on Saturday.
"With this discovery, we will meet the natural gas needs of homes in Türkiye for 3.5 years," Erdogan said during an event in Istanbul, Reuters reported.
The discovery, with an economic value of around $30 billion, was found in the Goktepe-3 well at a depth of 3,500 metres, Erdogan said.
Türkiye's daily natural gas production at its flagship Sakarya field in the Black Sea has reached around 9.5 million cubic metres, as the country ramps up its energy ambitions both at home and abroad.
Türkiye, which imports over 90% of its energy needs, is pushing to cut its import bill and boost supply security by developing domestic resources and expanding international partnerships in oil and gas exploration.

Pakistan offers assistance as 6.1 magnitude quake flattens buildings in Türkiye's Balikesir province

ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Monday expressed deep concern at a magnitude 6.1 earthquake that flattened buildings in Türkiye's Balikesir province, saying that Pakistan stands ready to offer any assistance to Ankara. Türkiye's disaster management agency said the quake was recorded at around 19:53 local time (16:53 GMT) on Sunday evening and was felt as far away as Istanbul. An 81-year-old woman passed away shortly after she was pulled from the rubble in the town of Sindirgi, which was the epicenter of the quake, Türkiye's Interior Minister Ali Yerlikaya said. He said 16 buildings had collapsed in the province due to the tremors, injuring around 29. None of the injured were critically wounded, Yerlikaya said. 'Deeply concerned by the earthquake in Turkiye's Balıkesir province,' Sharif wrote on social media platform X. 'I convey my heartfelt sympathies to my dear brother, President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, and assure him that Pakistan stands ready to extend all possible assistance.' Türkiye's disaster management agency said the earthquake was followed by several aftershocks, including one measuring 4.6 magnitude, and urged citizens not to enter damaged buildings. President Erdogan issued a statement following the earthquake, wishing all affected citizens a speedy recovery. 'May god protect our country from any kind of disaster,' the Turkish president wrote on X. Türkiye sits on top of major fault lines and earthquakes are frequent. In 2023, a magnitude 7.8 earthquake killed more than 53,000 people in Türkiye and destroyed or damaged hundreds of thousands of buildings in 11 southern and southeastern provinces. Another 6,000 people were killed in the northern parts of Syria.

Magnitude 6.1 earthquake hits Turkiye's Balikesir province, killing 1 and collapsing buildings

ISTANBUL: A magnitude 6.1 earthquake struck Turkiye's northwestern province of Balikesir on Sunday, killing at least one person and causing more than a dozen buildings to collapse, officials said. At least 29 people were injured. The earthquake, with an epicenter in the town of Sindirgi, sent shocks that were felt some 200 kilometers (125 miles) to the north in Istanbul — a city of more than 16 million people. An elderly woman died shortly after being pulled out alive from the debris of a collapsed building in Sindirgi, Interior Minister Ali Yerlikaya told reporters. Four other people were rescued from the building. Yerlikaya said a total of 16 buildings collapsed in the region — most of them derelict and unused. Two mosque minarets also tumbled down, he said. None of the injured were in serious condition, the minister said. Television footage showed rescue teams asking for silence so they can listen for signs of life beneath the rubble. Turkiye's Disaster and Emergency Management Agency said the earthquake was followed by several aftershocks, including one measuring 4.6, and urged citizens not to enter damaged buildings. President Recep Tayyip Erdogan issued a statement wishing all affected citizens a speedy recovery. 'May God protect our country from any kind of disaster,' he wrote on X. Pakistan, Turkish navies conclude first bilateral amphibious exercise in Karachi

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan and Türkiye's navies concluded their first-ever bilateral amphibious exercise in the port city of Karachi, aimed at enhancing 'maritime collaboration and interoperability,' state media reported on Wednesday. A naval amphibious exercise is a military drill that simulates the landing of troops from ships onto a coastline, designed to strengthen coordination and combat readiness for assaults, evacuations or disaster response operations. The exercise featured combat firing techniques, amphibious operation drills, convoy escorting drills along with military operations in urban terrain. 'Live firing drills and close combat scenarios designed to sharpen tactical coordination and readiness in littoral environments were also a part of the exercise,' the Associated Press of Pakistan (APP) said in its report. 'The exercise culminated with a comprehensive amphibious drill in the designated coastal area validating operational readiness of both navies.' It added the bilateral exercise reflected the 'deep-rooted' defense partnership between Pakistan and Türkiye, reaffirming their shared commitment to regional peace through regular joint training. Pakistan Navy Chief Admiral Naveed Ashraf also visited to Türkiye recently, where he was conferred the prestigious Turkish military honor, the 'Legion of Merit,' in recognition of his efforts to enhance maritime cooperation between the two countries. Pakistan and Türkiye maintain strong diplomatic, economic and defense relations. Turkish defense firms have played a significant role in modernizing Pakistan's Agosta 90B-class submarines and have also supplied Islamabad with advanced military equipment including drones The two nations regularly hold joint military drills to boost cooperation and synergy. The last exercise, Ataturk-XIII in February, brought together special forces for combat training to enhance interoperability.
