Google to Spend $75 Billion on AI Infrastructure Despite Tariff Tensions
Speaking at the Google Cloud Next Conference 2025 on Wednesday, CEO Sundar Pichai said the company's 2025 capital expenditure will focus on expanding its data centers and server capacity to support artificial intelligence compute needs and its cloud business. This will support our customers across the board, he noted.
Pichai also introduced Google's Cloud Wide Area Network, or Cloud WAN, which will soon be available to global enterprise customers. He said the system leverages Google's global network, offering up to 40% faster application performance while cutting ownership costs by as much as 40%.
The move follows a fourth-quarter 2024 capex outlay of $14 billion, mainly allocated to infrastructure, including servers and data centers supporting Google Services, Cloud, and DeepMind. Alphabet's CFO Anat Ashkenazi shared those figures in February.
Despite rising hardware costs due to trade policy, Alphabet joins Amazon (NASDAQ:AMZN), Meta Platforms (NASDAQ:META), and Microsoft (NASDAQ:MSFT) in continuing large-scale infrastructure investments through 2025. Google Cloud executive Sachin Gupta told Reuters that while tariffs could raise input costs, customer demand still supports the expansion.
On the same day, President Trump announced a temporary easing of tariffs on dozens of countries, while tightening trade measures targeting China.

Hertz stock jumps on deal to sell its used cars on Amazon
Rental car firm Hertz (HTZ) struck a deal with Amazon Autos (AMZN) on Wednesday to sell some of its used car inventory, which the company says will make it easier for customers to purchase cars from its fleet. Starting today, customers can search Amazon Autos to browse, finance, and purchase from thousands of used Hertz fleet vehicles from brands like Ford, Toyota, Chevrolet, Nissan, and others. Hertz Car Sales, the rental car firm's used car sales arm, will be Amazon Autos' first fleet dealer. Hertz shares jumped 9% in premarket trade. "Our goal is to reimagine the car-buying experience and meet customers where they are — whether online or in person — with convenience, confidence and scale," said Jeff Adams, Hertz Car Sales EVP in a statement. "Amazon Autos is the ideal partner to help us deliver on this as customers can shop our expansive inventory of high-quality used cars on the same trusted marketplace where millions shop every day." Switch Auto Insurance and Save Today! Affordable Auto Insurance, Customized for You The Insurance Savings You Expect Great Rates and Award-Winning Service Hertz said sales will begin in Dallas, Houston, Los Angeles, and Seattle metro areas, with plans to expand to Hertz Car Sales' 45 locations nationwide. After customers complete their purchase online, they can pick up the vehicles at Hertz locations in those cities. "This collaboration allows us to offer an expanded selection of well-maintained vehicles from more dealerships across the country, while maintaining the simplicity that customers expect from Amazon,' said Fan Jin, Global Head of Amazon Autos in a statement. Hertz will offer a 115-point inspection process, and 12-month/12,000 mile powertrain warranty. Hertz is also adding 7-day/250-mile buy back guarantee and 24-hour roadside assistance. For Amazon, adding Hertz vehicles is another big move for its auto sales business. Late in 2024 Amazon struck a deal with Hyundai (HYMTF) to sell new vehicles in cities like New York, Los Angeles, and Chicago, among others offering Amazon users the ability to buy and finance vehicles from local participating dealers directly on Amazon's website or app. As for Hertz, the company is coming off something of a PR hit after its newly implemented AI scanning tool for returned vehicles dinged renters with high fees, sometimes thousands of dollars, for damage that renters claim they did not do. Amazon Clears Out Fire HD 10 Tablet (Newest Model) Below Prime Day Pricing for Back-to-School
You really don't need to spend over $100 if you're in the market for an everyday tablet. Amazon makes some of the best budget-friendly options out there, and of course, a good discount can make the purchase sweeter. We've just spotted the newest Amazon Fire HD 10 tablet down to $90 on Amazon, which is a 36% discount from its regular price. The tablet is available in three color options, all of which are discounted. See at Amazon The tablet is built mainly for entertainment, and the features reflect that. The 10-inch Full HD (1080p) screen delivers sharp visuals with stunning detail and exceptional clarity. Movies, TV shows, or books – a comfortable viewing experience is a given. There's a 5 MP front-facing camera to make video calls easy (or recording TikToks – no judgement). Day-long use is made possible with a solid battery that will last you 13 hours on a single charge. Performance gets a boost with an octa-core processor and 3 GB of RAM. It's 25% faster and more powerful than its predecessors, which were already quite decent for everyday tasks. Note that while the RAM is great for browsing, streaming, and some light app use, it's not exactly made for heavy multitasking. If you're planning to use it for resource-intensive creative tasks on the go, we recommend looking at other configurations. Clumsy hands will appreciate the durability. You're getting strengthened glass made from aluminosilicate glass. In fact, it's been tested to be almost three times more durable than the Samsung Galaxy Tab A8. Let your kids hold it without worrying about scratches or accidental drops. The tablet is compatible with the Amazon Stylus Pen (sold separately). If you're primarily getting the tablet for studying or sketching, the pen should help with both. And since it plays nicely with Alexa, you can use it as a smart home hub. Managing lights, playing music, or checking the weather – do it all completely hands-free. This version comes with 32GB of storage, but if you ever need more, you can always expand it with a microSD card (up to 1TB supported). The 64GB version of the tablet is also available for $100. All things considered, this tablet is great for streaming your favorite shows, reading books, listening to podcasts, and even playing low-spec games. At just $90, you're getting modest features in a great, lightweight design. Make sure to get your orders in before the deal expires. See at Amazon

10 things to watch in the stock market Wednesday including TJX's surge and new Target CEO
The Club's 10 things to watch Wednesday, Aug. 20 — Today's newsletter was written by Investing Club editor Kevin Stankiewicz. 1. Wall Street was set to open slightly lower today after the S & P 500 closed lower yesterday for the third session in a row. Investors were parsing the latest retail earnings this morning. They were also looking ahead to this afternoon's release of the minutes from the Federal Reserve's July meeting — two days before Fed Chairman Jerome Powell addresses the Jackson Hole central bank confab Friday. 2. Shares of TJ Maxx parent TJX Companies are rallying to a new all-time high after second-quarter earnings results beat expectations. Same-store sales were also better than what the Street was expecting. TJX also raised its full-year guide despite tariff headwinds. Consumers want value, and that's what TJX's off-price chains deliver. 3. Target shares tumbled nearly 11% on earnings yet again after the struggling retailer reported another quarter of same-store sales declines and reiterated its full-year outlook. It also announced that Chief Operating Officer Michael Fiddelke will replace longtime CEO Brian Cornell in February. 4. Shares of Lowe's added 3% on the back of better-than-expected quarterly sales and revenue , along with a slight increase to its full-year sales outlook. The home improvement retailer also announced plans to buy drywall and insulation distributor Foundation Building Materials for $8.8 billion. It's a move that mirrors Club name Home Depot's two recent acquisitions to better serve professional customers. 5. McDonald's is cutting the price of combo meals after the fast-food chain was able to convince its franchisees to go along with the plan, The Wall Street Journal reported . It's part of an effort to win back customers who have shied away from the chain in recent years due to rising prices. 6. Club name Amazon's auto sales platform is adding used cars from Hertz , sending shares of the car-rental provider up 10%. Amazon's stock wasn't moving much, unsurprisingly, given that Amazon Autos is a tiny part of the overall company. But with shares of Carvana and Carmax down on the news, investors clearly see the potential for Amazon to grow it. 7. The national average rate on a 30-year fixed-rate mortgage ticked up to 6.68% from last week's 6.67%, and home loan demand stalled. After last week's 23% surge in refinancing applications, refis fell 3% this week. Purchase apps rose 0.1% after last week's 1% increase, according to the latest data from the Mortgage Bankers Association . 8. The FDA approved the first-ever glucose monitoring system specifically for weight loss. The startup Signos makes the system, which uses AI and an off-the-shelf continuous glucose monitor from Dexcom . It can be used as another tool by people taking the GLP-1 drugs from Club name Eli Lilly and Novo Nordisk . But, anyone who wants to lose weight can use the system to help them on their journey. 9. Club name Honeywell is buying a trio of utility software programs from SparkMeter. While these are small deals for Honeywell, the strategic rationale is about enhancing its exposure to growing electricity demand, thanks largely to AI computing. 10. Microsoft will be "an important partner for years to come," OpenAI finance chief Sarah Friar said this morning on CNBC's "Squawk Box." With questions about what OpenAI's push for independence could mean for Club stock Microsoft, Friar's comments are notable. Their evolving and reportedly tense relationship is one of the biggest stories in tech and AI .
