
The Marketing Society GCC Awards 2025: Mashreq, Majid Al Futtaim, Etihad and more shortlisted
The awards, launched in the UAE in 2023, aim to recognise marketing work that demonstrates not only creativity and effectiveness but also contributes to business growth and reputation. The 2025 edition saw a significant increase in participation, with entries tripling year-on-year.
The shortlist spans eight categories: Brand Communication, Brand Evolution, Customer Experience & Engagement, Sustainability, Successful & Effective Partnerships, B2B, Best Use of Media, and Best Team. The entries represent a wide range of industries including retail, tourism, tech, banking, aviation, FMCG, mobility and real estate.

Judging will be conducted in two stages. The first involves a scoring system that evaluates strategy, insights, innovation, risk, results, and the extent to which the work elevates the marketing profession. The second stage sees top-scoring entries debated by the panel to determine the winners.
The 2025 judging panel comprises 24 senior marketing leaders from across the region, representing organisations including Mondelez, Diriyah, Gulf Bank, PIF, Wio Bank, Samsung and Pepsi, among others.
The Marketing Society GCC Awards 2025 winners will be announced at the awards ceremony taking place on Tuesday, 24 June, from 7–10pm at Atlantis, Dubai.

South African auto parts group Jendamark braces for US tariff hit
GQEBERHA - South African auto parts manufacturer Jendamark Automation stands to lose 750 million ($43 million) rand of contracts in a U.S. market it has built up to account for 50% of its exports, its operations director told Reuters. The 40-year-old company based in coastal city Gqeberha builds automated assembly lines for catalytic converters, engines and axles for automotive customers such as BMW and Mercedes-Benz among others. But like global automakers and suppliers far and wide, they have been hit hard by U.S. tariffs. "As it stands now, we've got about 750 million rand of deals with our American customers that (we're) at risk of losing," Siegfried Lokotsch said. "I don't know if they're going to still buy the lines from us. We thought we were going to get the orders, we were in a good position ... In my mind, they're gone (the contracts) because they've (the tariffs) just gone up." About 85% of Jendamark's business in South Africa is for export, with 50% of that to the U.S., where it also has an office. Jendamark is looking for new contracts in other markets, such as Saudi Arabia, but the company has its work cut out to replace the U.S. business it expects to lose. "To find a new market and to understand how they operate in the country and where the opportunities are is not something that just happens overnight," he said. ($1 = 17.5018 rand)

South Africa's auto sector hit by job losses and company closures
Low domestic sales of locally made cars, an influx of imports and low levels of local content have led to 12 company closures and over 4,000 job losses in the South African motor industry over two years, the trade minister said on Wednesday. South Africa, a market long dominated by the likes of Volkswagen, Toyota and Mercedes-Benz , saw sales of 515,850 locally produced cars last year, far below the South Africa Automotive Masterplan 2035 target of 784,509, Minister Parks Tau told delegates at an auto parts conference. Some 64% of vehicles sold in South Africa are imports. Additionally, localisation - the level of local assembly, labour and components - remains stagnant at 39%, well short of the 60% target, while U.S. tariffs now significantly impact the country's 28.7 billion rand ($1.64 billion) automotive exports, he added. "These pressures have triggered 12 company closures and over 4,000 job losses in two years," Tau said. South Africa's automotive industry employs 115,000 people directly, with over 80,000 in component manufacturing alone. Experts say that with the U.S. tariffs on cars and parts that were imposed from April, jobs are under threat as some companies lose contracts in America. On Tuesday, South Africa submitted a revised offer for a trade deal with Washington, in an effort to lower the 30% tariff U.S. President Donald Trump imposed last week. To help respond to the challenges the industry is facing, an incentive scheme for local manufacturing now includes electric vehicles and associated components, Tau said. "Localisation is not merely policy compliance, it is existential. A 5% increase in local content would unlock 30 billion rand in new procurement, dwarfing the 4.4 billion rand U.S. export market," Tau said. International manufacturers such as Stellantis and China's Chery are looking to localise production in South Africa, with Stellantis ready to break ground in the Eastern Cape province. Majid Developments targets affordable luxury with second residential project in Dubai
As part of its strategic push into Dubai's 'affordable luxury' segment, Majid Developments recently launched its second residential project, Arlington Park, located in the Dubai Land Residence Complex. The move follows last year's successful market entry of the company's first project, Mayfair Gardens, in Jumeirah Garden City. Both projects are part of a five-project portfolio worth approximately AED 500 million ($136 million). 'Dubai has one of the most dynamic real estate markets in the world, consistently attracting strong demand from investors and end-users alike,' said Mansoor Majid, CEO of Majid Developments. 'The overwhelming investor interest during the EOI phase for Mayfair Gardens and Arlington Park is a clear indicator of market demand and a validation of our strategic entry into real estate development.' Mayfair Gardens, which broke ground in August 2024, is scheduled for completion in the second quarter of 2026. The main contractor is CJ Tec Contracting. The construction of Arlington Park started in June 2025 and is scheduled for completion in the fourth quarter of 2027. A shoring contractor has been appointed to handle excavation and dewatering for the project's two basement levels. With Mayfair Gardens and Arlington Park accounting for 50 percent of the target investment of $136 million, the company is on track to launching the remaining three projects, Mansoor noted. Majid Developments' COO Mustafa Majid said the company owns land adjacent to Mayfair and Arlington Park projects, presenting an opportunity to launch follow-up developments tentatively named Mayfair 2 and Arlington 2. 'We are also exploring locations such as Dubai Islands and Bu Kadra for future projects,' he disclosed. Affordable luxury Majid Developments entered the UAE real estate development sector in 2024, leveraging over 20 years of experience in construction and contracting across the UAE, Turkey, and Afghanistan. According to Mansoor, the company is responding to demand for smart, connected communities that include amenities like gyms, co-working spaces, landscaped areas, and wellness facilities - in a single location and within an accessible price range. 'The challenge for us is to offer all these amenities at an affordable price,' he said. 'We have addressed this challenge through curated design, global sourcing of premium materials and competitive pricing.' Elaborating further, Mansoor said the company prioritises sourcing materials before finalising project designs. 'This process is technically complex, especially when dealing with premium materials. For instance, high-quality materials from Italy can range in price from $50 to $700. Despite the price variation, Italy maintains strict quality controls across all factories, ensuring consistent standards throughout the supply chain. Our challenge lies in selecting the right material at the right price and importing it to our region. 'Another technical consideration is furniture design. Importing finished furniture products from Italy is costly due to high shipping expenses. Instead, we source premium textiles from Italy and manufacture the furniture locally in Dubai. This approach is not only cost-efficient but also allows greater flexibility in design. By combining world-class quality with local production, we deliver what we call 'affordable luxury'. 'By 'affordable luxury', we mean offering a lifestyle that reflects the public's image of luxury at a price point that's both accessible and sustainable for long-term living,' added Mustafa. The company also offers pricing below the market average, coupled with highly flexible payment plans that exceed those typically available from other developers.
