Man gets message from former high school bully, 20 years after being harassed for being gay
The unexpected note didn't just apologise, it reflected a deeper personal admission: the bully's 15-year-old son had recently come out as gay, prompting the man to reconsider how he had treated others in the past.
For Brown, now 37 and a well-known influencer, the apology stirred strong emotions. 'Honestly, when I first saw the message come through, I didn't know what to expect,' Brown told
People.
'I couldn't think of a single reason as to why he'd reach out. But there it was, and I opened it,' he said.
The man shared that his initial hope after learning about his son was that the teen would experience the kindness he never showed Brown.
Growing up in a small Western New York town, Brown recalls being a bright, expressive boy who loved singing Whitney Houston songs and playing with Polly Pockets — interests that made him a target of bullying and profoundly affected his adolescence.
'Being bullied as a child truly shaped the entire experience of growing up. I over-analysed every part of myself,' Brown said.
'Acceptance became the only currency I craved, and it made me put a lot of pressure on myself.'
Since then, Brown has developed a multifaceted career in theatre, social media, and podcasting. Hosting the popular Wondery podcast The Big Flop and amassing nearly 4 million followers online, he uses his platform to connect people and foster self-acceptance.
'As my platform has grown, I saw the impact that it can have. I want to be a bridge and try my best to bring people together,' Brown said.
'A lot of people have experienced bullying, feeling like they have been left behind, or don't love themselves, and I use my platform to let them know that they are not broken or alone.'
His upcoming book, Be Your Own Bestie, set for release in February 2026, explores his personal journey toward self-love.
While Brown has received apologies from others before, this one struck a different chord. 'I cried when I read what he wrote to me,' Brown admitted.
'I cried for me, the little boy who desperately cried in his mum's arms, begging to not be gay. I cried for his son… and I cried because I am a chronically optimistic person (so annoying) and this is proof that there is goodness in people, even if they don't always show it.'
Brown responded to his former bully, recognising the courage it took to acknowledge past mistakes and expressing gratitude for the healing his message brought. 'What a cool feeling to get that moment. I guess people can change,' he said, reflecting on the T
ikTok video
of their exchange that has over 2.4 million views.
He hopes this story offers hope and healing to others who have endured similar hardships. 'We can't change other people or will them to give us retribution, but we can control how we show up for ourselves. I'm grateful that I got this moment, but I'm more lucky that I am in a place to accept it,' Brown told People,

Brad Pitt's mother dies aged 84
Brad Pitt's mother Jane Pitt has died. The retired school counsellor has passed away at the age of 84, People reports. Brad's niece, Sydney, has already taken to social media to pay a glowing tribute to Jane, explaining that she "cared deeply for everyone and everything". Alongside a series of throwback photographs, Sydney wrote: "My sweet Grammy, Jane Etta, we were not ready for you to go yet but knowing you are finally free to sing, dance, and paint again makes it a tad easier. "If you knew Grammy, you knew she had the biggest heart. She cared deeply for everyone and everything, no questions asked. "She taught me how to paint, how to be strong, how to lead with kindness, to love Jesus through everything, and to find joy in the smallest things. She made up the silliest games just to make us laugh, and she believed in fairness, in putting others first, and doing good simply because it was the right thing to do. "Every year before school, she gave each of us grandkids a 'special day' which was a whole day to do whatever we wanted (and Papa had to go along with it… though I know he secretly loved it too). Mine usually started with banana splits for breakfast, hours of playing Trouble, a craft project obvi, riding every ride together at Silver Dollar City like the bada** she was, dinner at Olive Garden with Papa, mini golf where she'd make a V with her feet to help me aim… (and somehow still beat me) and ending the night watching Paulie until we feel asleep. "She could keep up with all 14 of us grandkids without missing a beat. There was no limit to the love she gave, and everyone who met her felt it. "I don't know how we move forward without her. But I know she's still here in every brushstroke, every kind gesture, every hummingbird. She was love in its purest form. "We were truly blessed to have her to love on growing up and I know she lives on through each of us (sic)" Brad has yet to make a public comment about his mom's passing. However, he recently gave a shout-out to his mom during an appearance on the Today show. He told anchor Savannah Guthrie: "I gotta say hi to my mom because she watches you every morning. To Jane Pitt. Love you, mom."

Jonathan Bailey hails 'extraordinary' Scarlett Johansson
Jonathan Bailey thinks Scarlett Johansson is "extraordinary". The 37-year-old actor starred alongside Scarlett, 40, in Jurassic World Rebirth, and Jonathan loved the experience of working with his showbiz pal. He told Extra: "She's one of my favourite people I've met. She's extraordinary." Jurassic World Rebirth was directed by Gareth Edwards and also starred the likes of Mahershala Ali, Rupert Friend, Manuel Garcia-Rulfo, and Ed Skrein. Jonathan felt fortunate to work with such a talented group of people on the movie. He said: "We didn't actually talk about the script at all. But when you're going into something like this, it shows the sort of mercurial magic of, you know, putting people together, surrounding it with incredible special effects people, Gareth with his team and people he's worked with before." Jonathan jumped at the chance to become part of the Jurassic film franchise. The actor - who also stars the Wicked movies - shared: "When you're doing this, there's nothing to complain about, like at all! "You know, of course you wanna feel the heat, you wanna feel like you're about to pass out at points, but also, you know, like, wading through the mangroves in Thailand with a film crew. It's like..." Meanwhile, Scarlett recently revealed that she had to contend with some "extraordinary circumstances" on the set of Jurassic World Rebirth. The actress filmed the movie in places like Malta and Thailand, and Scarlett admitted that she found it to be an "insane" yet rewarding experience. Speaking to People, she shared: "We all laughed a lot, and we were thrown into such extraordinary circumstances physically. "Half our set would wash away, and then ten minutes later it would grow too large, and there's no continuity to anything because the sun was moving in. It was just insane." Scarlett actually recalled one particularly scary experience when they were filming in Thailand. The actress said: "When we first got to Thailand, we had to do a camera test of the full costume and all that stuff, and just putting all the pieces of the costume together and then standing in a mosquito-infested bush, I was like, 'This is really happening.'" In another scene, Scarlett wore a harness to navigate her way down a cliff. And the Hollywood star now admits that it was a painful experience. She said: "We wore harnesses under our actual harness. "You have a movie harness that looks like a harness, then you have an actual harness that's hooked up to a line, because you're not actually abseiling, you're on a stunt rig. "I was happy to say goodbye to the harness!"
