Tragic multi-vehicle crash on N2 near Gingindlovu leaves one dead and four injured
A tragic multi-vehicle accident on the N2 near Gingindlovu in northern KwaZulu-Natal on Saturday evening left one person dead and four others, including two children, injured.
KwaZulu-Natal MEC for Transport and Human Settlements Siboniso Duma confirmed the incident, describing it as a 'horrific accident' involving a Toyota Fortuner, a minibus taxi, and a third, unidentified vehicle which burst into flames.
'We have been contacted by our highly dedicated team from Road Traffic Inspectorate and Road Angels South Africa and tow truck drivers informing us about a horrific accident along the N2, just after Gingindlovu towards Mthunzini,' said Duma.
The crash occurred near the Fairbreeze Mine, and emergency personnel from IPSS Medical Rescue were among the first on the scene. 'At least four people, including two children, have sustained injuries ranging from critical to minor after two vehicles collided,' IPSS said in a statement.
The injured occupants travelling in a white Toyota Fortuner, a family of four including two children were taken to hospital for treatment, confirmed Duma.
According to the department, seven passengers from the minibus taxi were not injured and continued their journey to Durban.
The unknown third vehicle was engulfed in flames on impact.
Following a forensic investigation, Duma confirmed that the occupant in this vehicle had died.
MEC Duma expressed concern over burn-related injuries often sustained in such crashes. 'Victims of road accidents involving cars that burst into flames are likely to suffer severe burn wounds and smoke-inhalation injuries,' he said.
Duma said a fatal accident also occurred the same day in Bergville, where five people died.

Mpumalanga churchgoers robbed at gunpoint, shots fired inside
A group of women are left traumatised after two armed men stormed their church in Mkhuhlu near Hazyview yesterday and robbed them of cash and valuables. Mpumalanga News reports that members of the Pentecost Church were about to pray at 12:40 when the suspects, wearing balaclavas, entered the church. 'The robbers were armed and fired shots into the church ceiling. They demanded cellphones and collected wallets, handbags and vehicle keys. They also took the cash collection, amounting to R1 220, contributed by the church members,' says provincial police spokesperson Brigadier Donald Mdhluli. The suspects fled in a white Toyota Fortuner belonging to a 61-year-old congregant. The vehicle was later found abandoned in Marite Trust, near the Carlton fuel station. Mdhluli says police recovered handbags and car keys from the vehicle, but the stolen cellphones and cash were missing. Several spent cartridges were also found inside the church. No arrests had been made at the time of publication. Lawyer arrested after clocking 222km/h on N2 in KZN
Lawyer arrested after clocking 222km/h on N2 in KZN Two well-known professionals — a lawyer and an auditor — found themselves behind bars over the weekend after being caught driving at dangerous speeds along the N2 near Park Rynie on the KZN South Coast. According to The Witness, provincial Transport MEC Sipho Duma has applauded the Road Traffic Inspectorate (RTI) team in Park Rynie for their vigilance, saying their work reflects the province's 'Zero Tolerance, No Nonsense' and 'Alufakwa' campaigns. 'I have mandated our highly efficient and dedicated team to sustain this campaign on our roads. We commend the Park Rynie RTI team for their outstanding commitment to ensuring road safety this weekend.' Among those arrested was a lawyer from Mthatha, who was apprehended for clocking a staggering 222km/h in a 120km/h zone in a Mercedes-Benz. The RTI team had to give chase after he failed to stop when signalled. He was eventually caught and taken to Scottburgh Police Station, where bail was set at R3 000. In a separate incident, a Reservoir Hills-based auditor was arrested after reaching 177km/h in his Hyundai iMv. He was also processed at Scottburgh Police Station and granted R1 500 bail. A third motorist was caught driving at 178km/h, and a pursuit led to his arrest. He remains in holding cells, awaiting bail. 'These arrests send a clear message: No one is above the law,' said Duma. 'It is particularly disappointing when professionals — people who should know better — put lives at risk.' Duma added that the department is acutely aware of the long-term trauma and socio-economic devastation caused by road crashes. 'In our interaction with families of victims, we hear painful stories of job losses, disability, and homes torn apart. Reckless drivers fuel this vicious cycle,' he said. The MEC reaffirmed the department's commitment to ensuring road safety and holding speedsters accountable.
