Despite different rooting interests, Steelers fans excited for football ahead of preseason home opener
Saturday's contest was the only home preseason game of the 2025 season, but Max Kilgore's Acrisure Stadium debut still meant the world.
"He was ready to put the T.J. [Watt] jersey on at about 7 o'clock this morning," Dan, Max's dad, said.
Between the cornhole and the grilling, another crew was ready to support the Steelers, too.
It's because of Max Hurleman, a rookie running back for Pittsburgh.
"The guy who did the backflip last week after he scored the touchdown? That's my kid," Max's mother, Lisa, said.
Her son is an undrafted free agent out of Notre Dame.
"We're all here to celebrate his opportunity here with the Steelers," Jason, Max's father, said.
Max's family and friends made the trip from Berks County, Pennsylvania.
Before his final year at Notre Dame, he went to Colgate and played football there. Some of his friends from that school traveled to Pittsburgh on Saturday as well.
As they celebrated with food and fun, they couldn't be prouder.
"He's just doing his thing, and it's been very, very surreal," Lisa said.
"Surreal" was echoed all over the North Shore on Saturday between family, friends, father, and son. The wins and losses may not count, but it's the memories that do.
"I hope he goes to bed happy and had one of his favorite days ever," Kilgore said, referring to his son.
The Steelers play their final preseason game against the Carolina Panthers in Charlotte, North Carolina, on Aug. 21 on KDKA-TV.
Just 22 days remain until the season opener against the New York Jets on Sept. 7.

Reliever Drew Pomeranz retired the ensuing batter to escape the inning with a one-run deficit. Chicago called up two hitters on Monday in Luke Little and Gavin Hollowell. Sinner vows to play US Open after Cincy retirement
Jannik Sinner insisted on Monday he would be ready to defend his US Open crown after illness forced him to retire from his Cincinnati Open final clash with Carlos Alcaraz. World number one Sinner -- who is due to to play in the US Open's revamped mixed doubles tournament on Tuesday -- conceded defeat to Alcaraz on Monday after going 5-0 down in the first set. The Italian did not speak to journalists after the loss, issuing a statement saying only that he would definitely play at the US Open in New York, where the singles main draw starts on Sunday. "I love Grand Slams a lot, they are the main tournaments for, for my season and my career," Sinner said. "The US Open is going to be a tough tournament, but in the same time, I'm looking forward to it if I'm ready, physically and mentally. "I will be ready to push ... now a couple of days of recovery, and then we get again back to work, and hopefully we'll be ready. "(The Open) is for sure, the main goal here in the US. Royals' Salvador Perez out with illness in series opener against Rangers
KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The Kansas City Royals scratched catcher Salvador Perez from the starting lineup of their series opener against the Texas Rangers on Monday night because of an illness. Perez was supposed to catch for starter Michael Wacha and bat fifth in the opener of an important four-game set between teams clinging to wild-card hope. Luke Maile will be behind the plate instead and bat eight in the lineup. Perez, a nine-time All-Star, is hitting .244 with 22 homers and 70 RBIs this season. Maile has become the primary backup in Kansas City after it sent Freddy Fermin to the Padres ahead of last month's nonwaiver trade deadline.
