10 notes on 10 Steelers from Week One of the preseason
On Saturday night, the Pittsburgh Steelers beat the Jacksonville Jaguars on the strength of their passing offense. We have gone over the game and after breaking down the obvious like the quarterbacks, we have 10 notes on 10 Steelers who stood out for us and not always for good reasons. 1 - RB Kaleb Johnson Johnson's yards before contact were negative thanks to how awful the Steelers offensive line did run blocking so we give Johnson a pass this week. 2 - WR Max Hurleman At this point, we are crunching the numbers, trying to figure out how to get Hurleman on the 53-man roster. 3 - WR Roc Taylor Like Hurleman, Roc Taylor made a strong statement on Saturday and is really going to push guys like Scotty Miller and Ben Skowronek for the last spot on the depth chart. 4 - OT Troy Fautanu The run blocking by the Steelers offensive line was down overall but that's not on Troy Fautanu. Not only did he not give up a pressure on 24 passing snaps, he was the only offensive lineman consistently doing his job on run plays. 5 - DT Yahya Black Black only played 10 snaps but it was enough for us to be convinced he needs a heavier workload next week. Black's lateral agility for a man his size is remarkable. 6 - EDGE Jack Sawyer We aren't going to overreact but this wasn't a great debut for Sawyer as a pass rusher. We are hopeful he will play with more confidence next week. 7 - EDGE DeMarvin Leal Time is running out for Leal to show he can be a 275-pound edge rusher. He was a tweener coming out of college and he's still a tweener. 8 - S Juan Thornhill Thornhill came out and decided to be the tone setter and you can see he's embraced his role as the new starting free safety. 9 - S Chuck Clark The Steelers gave Clark plenty of opportunity to make a statement on Saturday, but he's still a work in progress to get on the right page with this defense. 10 - LB Payton Wilson Wilson only played 12 snaps on Saturday but still found his way to four tackles. He's going to have a huge breakout season. This article originally appeared on Steelers Wire: 10 notes on 10 Steelers from Week One of the preseason

Steelers countdown to kickoff — No. 34: a history of the number and who wore it best
The Steelers countdown to kickoff is here — and we're at 34 days until Pittsburgh faces off against the New York Jets at MetLife Stadium. In the spirit of the countdown, we're taking a look at the history of No. 34 and the players who wore it best. Current Steelers No. 34 wearers: CB/PR Donte Kent, RB Max Hurleman A pair of Steelers rookies are the current No. 34 wearers on the roster — CB Donte Kent, who was selected with the 229th overall pick in the seventh round, and RB Max Hurleman, who signed with Pittsburgh as an undrafted free agent in May. Kent may have an easier road to making the 53-man roster with his punt return abilities, but Hurleman has every opportunity to make an impact throughout camp and the upcoming preseason matchups. Last five Steelers to wear No. 34: Best No. 34 in Steelers history: LB Andy Russell No Steeler has ever worn No. 34 better than LB Andy Russell — a ten-time team captain and part of arguably the greatest linebacker trio in the history of the NFL. Selected with the 220th pick in the 16th round of the 1963 NFL Draft, Russell was arguably one of the most consistent Steelers of all time, playing in 168 games for Pittsburgh — and never missing a contest due to injury. Russell won two Super Bowls with the legendary Steel Curtain defense, as well as earning seven Pro Bowl nominations, one First-Team All-Pro selection, and two Second-Team All-Pro selections before retiring in 1976. He was also named to the Pittsburgh Steelers All-Time Team and the Pittsburgh Steelers Hall of Honor — a truly remarkable legacy, one that deserves to be recognized as the greatest Steeler to wear No. 34. Undrafted rookie RB thanks Steelers for opportunity — looks to prove Tomlin, Khan right
The Steelers' 2025 NFL Draft haul may have been impressive — but one of Pittsburgh's undrafted rookies is ready to make a similar splash. Before throwing the first pitch at last Thursday's Reading Fightin Phils game, undrafted rookie RB Max Hurleman thanked the Steelers for taking a chance on him (courtesy of Reading Eagle's Jared Montalto): "Thankful to a really good organization like the Pittsburgh Steelers,' Hurleman said. 'I can't thank them enough — Coach (Mike) Tomlin, [Art] Rooney, [Omar] Khan — for just affording me this opportunity, and I'm going to make them right in their decision.' According to the Steelers' website, Hurleman rushed for 814 yards on 194 carries in 51 collegiate games — 23 of which he started. He also made an impact in the punt return game, accumulating 353 yards on 49 punt returns. Hurleman could follow in the footsteps of Steelers RB Jaylen Warren, who went undrafted in 2022 and has since proven that draft status is just a label. Sleeper Steelers RB Looks to Turn Heads: ‘I'm Going to Make Them Right in Their Decision'
Before throwing out the first pitch at the Reading Fightin Phils' game on Thursday, Pittsburgh Steelers undrafted running back Max Hurleman declared the Steelers will not regret their decision in giving him an opportunity. The Steelers signed the Wyomissing, Pa. native and former Notre Dame running back after a rookie tryout in May. 'Thankful to a really good organization like the Pittsburgh Steelers,' Hurleman said, via the Reading Eagle. 'I can't thank them enough. Coach (Mike) Tomlin, Mr. Rooney, Mr. Khan, for just affording me this opportunity, and I'm going to make them right in their decision.' Advertisement Hurleman started out his collegiate journey as a running back at Colgate. With the Raiders, he played in 35 games and made 23 starts over four seasons. He was the starting running back in the 2021 and 2022 seasons, rushing 92 times for 346 yards and one touchdown in 2021 and 83 times for 397 yards in 2022. He was also a prolific receiver, catching 30 passes for 281 yards in 2021 and 20 for 239 yards and one touchdown in 2022. Hurleman was one of three players to sign out of rookie camp, following fellow rookie tryout, tackle Gareth Warren, and veteran running back Trey Sermon. 'Probably the moment I walked in there and shook Coach Tomlin's hand, that was very surreal,' Hurleman said on the opportunity to be a Steeler. 'Just being in that building, and you have to separate the fan versus OK, now these are my coworkers. And so that's really the moment. Okay, this is it. It's pretty cool.' Advertisement Hurleman then transferred to Notre Dame as a cornerback for the 2024 season. He played just three snaps of defense for the Fighting Irish. No matter what position he is listed to play, Hurleman's major contributions have come on special teams. He returned 23 punts for Notre Dame last season for 138 yards. He also returned punts and kicks for Colgate in his time with the Raiders. At Notre Dame, Hurleman was a four-phase special teamer, playing on kickoff return, kick coverage, punt return and punt coverage units. In addition to his returns, he had four special teams tackles in 2024. Hurleman thinks his versatility is his best attribute. Advertisement 'Helped me a ton. Just being able to have one guy wear multiple hats definitely goes a long way in the league, there in the NFL,' Hurleman said of his versatility to play running back, wide receiver, cornerback and special teams. 'So I think being able to show that I could do all those different things really went a long way. I was afforded the opportunity to show that because some guys may have went down during the mini camp. And, you know, lucky for me, I was able to do that stuff, and I think it is very important.' The signings are former Notre Dame running back Max Hurleman, former Ohio State and Indianapolis Colts running back Trey Sermon, and former Lindenwood offensive lineman Gareth Warren. Advertisement The Sermon signing was previously reported. Hurleman, although announced as a running back, has worn a number of hats over his football career. Listed as a cornerback at Notre Dame, he largely played on special teams, logging snaps on coverage units and also returning punts. Before transferring to the Fighting Irish, he played four years at Colgate: three as a running back and one at wide receiver. The 5'11, 202-pound athlete ran a 4.68-second 40-yard dash at his pro day along with a 36' vertical and 13 reps on the bench press. In 2024, he recorded 13 total tackles and 23 punt returns with a six-yard average. Over his Colgate career, he recorded 814 rushing yards on 194 attempts, 80 receptions for 841 yards, and four touchdowns. Advertisement Warren, listed at 6'6, 328 pounds, started 36 games in college at left guard and left tackle. He was a first-team all-conference selection in 2024, helping the Lindenwood Lions rush for a conference-leading 173.7 yards per game. More from
