‘Minister, not monarch': Asaduddin Owaisi slams Kiren Rijiju over ‘minority benefit more' remark

Mint6 days ago
AIMIM chief Asaduddin Owaisi on July 7 slammed Union Minister Kiren Rijiju for the latter's comments, saying that India is the only country where the minorities get 'more benefits and protections' than the majority community.
The Hyderabad MP countered Rijiju's remarks given to a newspaper by claiming that India's minorities are not even second-class citizens anymore and are, in fact, 'hostages.'
"You are a Minister of the Indian Republic, not a monarch Kiren Rijiju. You hold a constitutional post, not a throne. Minority rights are fundamental rights, not charity," Owaisi wrote in a post on X, quoting Rijiju, who had shared his interview with the Indian Express.
'INDIA is the only country where the minorities get more benefits and protections than the majority community,' Rijiju wrote in the post sharing the interview.
Owaisi asked if it was a 'benefit' to be called Pakistani, Bangladeshi, jihadi, or Rohingya every single day? 'Is it 'protection' to be lynched? Is it protection that Indian citizens were kidnapped and pushed into Bangladesh?,' the AIMIM chief asked.
Rijiju said in the interview that in the last 11 years, under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the government has championed the principle of 'Sabka Saath, Sabka Vikas, Sabka Vishwas, Sabka Prayas'. Following this principle, he said, the Ministry of Minority Affairs has adopted the mantra of 'bhagidari se bhagyodaya (participation to good fortune)' to a result-oriented and empowerment-driven framework focused on education, skilling, entrepreneurship, and inclusion.
'The approach has ensured that minority communities are active and equal participants in India's growth story. The main point we have to understand is that minority communities are receiving more funds and support from the government than the majority community, the Hindus. Whatever the Hindus get, the minorities also do. But what the minorities get, the Hindus don't,' Rijiju told the newspaper.
Owaisi reacted by asking, if it was an 'honour' "to be the target of hate speeches from no less than the Prime Minister of India?'
'India's minorities are not even second-class citizens anymore. We are hostages. If you want to talk about 'favours', answer this: can Muslims be members of Hindu Endowment Boards? No. But your Waqf Amendment Act forces non-Muslims onto Waqf Boards — and allows them to form a majority,' Owaisi said.
Muslims, Owaisi said, are now the only group whose numbers have fallen in higher education. Their presence in the informal economy has gone up. They have been among the worst-hit by your economic policies, he said, adding 'this is your own govt's data.'
You are a Minister of the Indian Republic, not a monarch Kiren Rijiju. Minority rights are fundamental rights, not charity.
Indian Muslims are the only group whose children are now worse off than their parents or grandparents, the Hyderabad MP said. 'Intergenerational mobility has reversed. Muslim-concentrated areas are the ones most starved of public infrastructure and basic services,' he said.

Foreigners in Bihar rolls; will be removed after 'proper enquiry': ECI Officials

Tired of too many ads? Remove Ads In a significant development just ahead of the assembly elections in Bihar, Election Commission officials on Sunday indicated that a 'large number' of possible foreign nationals have been found living in the state and their names would be excluded from the final electoral rolls if it is so proven after "proper enquiry".The ECI is currently conducting a Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls in Bihar which involves house-to-house enumeration and verification of documents of every elector. "During the house-to-house visits, a large number of people from Nepal, Bangladesh and Myanmar have been found by the BLOs. These persons have been able to procure all documents including aadhaar, domicile certificate, ration card etc", ECI sources said. They said "after proper enquiry to be conducted from Aug 1 till Aug 30, if found true, such names shall not be included in the final list to be published on Sept 30, 2025".The three documents: Aadhaar, domicile certificate and ration card are not among the 11 documents proof-listed by the ECI in its June 24 order. The Supreme Court last week asked the ECI to consider allowing aadhaar and ration cards as well. The latest ECI revelation, therefore, is bound to bring the issue of citizenship to the centre of the SIR, especially in the Seemanchal region. Seemanchal is roughly spread across 24 assembly seats across the four districts of Kishanganj, Araria, Purnea and Katihar and has often been under watch for suspected infiltration of illegal immigrants. The home ministry has, on various occasions, highlighted the issue of influx of immigrants into different parts of the country, especially the Rohingyas. The issue of suspected Bangladeshi and Rohingyas Muslim presence in Seemanchal region has also been red flagged by agencies, sources told ET. "The issue of illegal intruders is related to national security, and should be dealt with strictly and they should be identified and deported," said a senior government per official estimates, there are nearly 40,000 Rohingyas across India with the highest number in Jammu and Kashmir, Delhi and Haryana among others. The problem has compounded since late 2011 with Rohingyas from Rakhine province in Myanmar migrating to India following persecution by the Myanmar armed there are no specific figures for Bihar, as per a Parliament reply on February 24, 2016, West Bengal with 3,724, followed by Tripura (1713), Tamil Nadu (639) and Maharashtra (228) recorded the highest number of cases of arrest of foreign nationals in 2014 under various sections of the Foreigners Act, 1946 and on charges of violating other provisions of the Immigration Control Rules & Regulations. There were 28,356 such foreign nationals found to be overstaying as of December 2014. As per the home ministry's data, more than 14,000 Rohingyas are presently registered with the UNHCR, as staying in India.

CM: No Aryan worth celebrating, so they attempt to steal Thiruvalluvar

Chennai: There have been attempts to paint Tamil poet-saint Thiruvalluvar in saffron and steal him, since there was none worth celebrating in Aryan culture, chief minister M K Stalin said on Sunday. However, Thiruvalluvar cannot be stolen, he said. "Thiruvalluvar is a rationalist, stood for self respect and advocated social justice. If someone attempts to snatch away Thiruvalluvar, they would not be able to bear the intensity of the poet's verses," the chief minister Stalin said after releasing a book on Thirukkural by lyricist Vairamuthu . The first copy of 'Valluvar Marai, Vairamuthu Urai,' was received by former Union finance minister P Chidambaram. In a veiled attack on right wing organisations, Stalin said that rather than stealing, there were attempts to deceive people by painting Thiruvalluvar in saffron. "Tamil society must oppose the attempts to paint ideological colours on Thiruvalluvar." "Manu Neethi cannot enter a place where there was justice based on Thirukkural. When Aryan civilization tried to destroy Dravidian tradition, Thirukkural protected it," he said. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Cách giao dịch ETH/USD mà không cần nắm giữ Ether IC Markets Tìm hiểu thêm Undo You Can Also Check: Chennai AQI | Weather in Chennai | Bank Holidays in Chennai | Public Holidays in Chennai Praising Vairamuthu for his book, Stalin said steps should be taken to make Thirukkural as the national book of India. Vairamuthu said 850 people have written interpretative commentaries for Thirukkural. "I am 851st person. The fact that there is still a lot left to interpret Thirukkural shows the height of Thiruvalluvar's work," he said. Earlier, Vairamuthu went to the memorial of Karunanidhi and placed the book there.

T.N. Chief Minister M.K. Stalin requests Jaishankar to secure release of fishermen from Sri Lankan custody

Chief Minister M.K. Stalin on Sunday wrote to Union Minister for External Affairs S. Jaishankar, requesting him to take appropriate diplomatic steps to secure the release of the fishermen and their fishing vessels apprehended by the Sri Lankan authorities. In the early hours of July 13, seven fishermen from Rameswaram were arrested by the Sri Lankan authorities. On the same day, in a separate incident, another mechanised boat was reported to have been struck by a Sri Lankan naval vessel, causing significant damage to its stern, he said. 'These recurring incidents are deeply alarming. They not only pose a grave threat to the safety and livelihoods of our fishermen but also subject their families to prolonged economic hardship and emotional distress,' Mr. Stalin contended. At present, 232 Tamil Nadu fishing boats and 50 fishermen are still being held by Sri Lankan authorities, he said. 'I further request that urgent and effective steps be taken to secure the release of all detained fishermen and their fishing boats at the earliest,' he added.
