Lewis Hamilton criticised for 'inappropriate comments' as Ferrari 'tragedy' uncovered

Daily Mirror3 days ago
A first Formula 1 season with Ferrari has not gone how Lewis Hamilton would have dreamed so far, his Sprint win in China the sole highlight of his maiden campaign in red so far
Lewis Hamilton has been slammed for his "inappropriate comments" at times this season. That criticism has come from a prominent former Formula 1 driver who believes some of the Brit's outbursts are contributing to his dream Ferrari move turning into "a bit of a tragedy".

Hamilton's switch from Mercedes to Ferrari, announced early in 2024, was one of the biggest driver changes in the sport's history. So hotly anticipated was the first sight of the seven-time F1 champion in his new surroundings that the first image of him standing in front of Enzo Ferrari's house at Maranello broke the internet when posted on social media in January this year.

And there was early promise, despite a wretched debut for the Scuderia at the Australian Grand Prix. In just the second round of the season, 40-year-old Hamilton tasted victory with Ferrari for the first time when he won the Sprint race at the Chinese Grand Prix.

But he was disqualified from the main race a day later when his car failed post-race technical checks. And that set the tone for the next few months and, after the first six events of 24, his only Grand Prix result better than seventh place was the fifth he managed at the Bahrain Grand Prix.
He has found his feet a little more since the start of the European season and has finished fourth in a Grand Prix on three occasions. But the podium still eludes him, while his ultimate ambition of winning an eighth F1 title in red will require a significant improvement in results next year.
At times, the disappointment has got to Hamilton who has often pointed the finger at himself for a lack of performance. But he has also produced some punchy lines, particularly over the radio which has raised questions over the state of his relationship with new race engineer Riccardo Adami.
Last time out at the Belgian Grand Prix, Ferrari introduced an upgraded new rear suspension which helped team-mate Charles Leclerc to record a fifth podium of the year. In contrast, Hamilton finished seventh at Spa-Francorchamps and said after the race that his car felt "the same as before".

In the eyes of Ralf Schumacher, it is a weakness of Hamilton that he struggles to adapt to change as well as some others on the grid. Speaking on a German-language podcast, the six-time F1 race winner also criticised the Brit for some of those comments he makes at times which he believes increases the pressure.
Schumacher said of Hamilton: "Lewis just finds it harder to cope with changes – he's simply more sensitive in that regard. Perhaps this new rear axle at Ferrari also unintentionally suits Leclerc's driving style better. We'll have to wait and see in the next few races.
"It's a bit of a tragedy and Hamilton sometimes makes inappropriate comments. Then to deliver a weekend like the one at Spa is, of course, unfortunate. But I would give him a little more time."

SPFL club chairman launches shock blast at OWN fans as he brands scenes at weekend ‘nothing short of a disgrace'

Click to share on X/Twitter (Opens in new window) Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window) HAMILTON ACADEMICAL chairman Jock Brown has launched a furious statement against 'people who have the audacity to call themselves Accies supporters.' The club chief has branded scenes surrounding a fans' protest on Saturday as 'nothing short of disgraceful.' Accies were slapped with a 15-point deduction in April in relation to multiple SPFL rule breaches. That deduction effectively relegated the club, who finished bottom of the Championship and were consigned to League One football for this season. And less than two weeks ago, the club was hit with a transfer embargo that is due to last until the end of the season. Nonetheless, manager John Rankin was able to add three new players to the squad on the eve of the league kick-off at the weekend there. A cash row between the club's current hierarchy and the owners of New Douglas Park saw Hamilton dramatically LEAVE their home stadium. Upon announcing that shock move in early May, the club revealed they were planning on building a new stadium in the area. They also agreed a deal to play their home matches at Broadwood Stadium in Cumbernauld. It's been a tricky time for Accies fans and a group of them decided to make their feelings known ahead of their opening League One fixture at the weekend. Around a 100 fans, including the Accies Supporters Association chief, protested before the match against Montrose. Players are running the Rangers dressing room - Martin knows EXACTLY what he's doing The stadium move was at the forefront of the fans' anger, with a banner placed outside the ground and T-shirts being worn reading "Hamilton for Accies." The group of fans also chanted for the exits of Hamilton owner Seref Zengin and director of football Gerry Strain. Red smoke bombs were also set off outside Broadwood. Two days on, Hamilton chief Jock Brown has released a furious statement in relation to the protests. He alleges that members of the group 'verbally abused decent supporters' and that police intervention ended up being required. Brown labelled the scenes on Saturday 'nothing short of a disgrace.' The chief also revealed the club are now taking steps to "ban the ringleaders of that shocking behaviour from all our matches." In a statement released to the club website, Brown said: "Our opening league match of the season on Saturday was blighted seriously by people who have the audacity to call themselves Accies supporters. "A 'protest' took place at Broadwood which necessitated police intervention and heaped shame on the perpetrators who verbally abused decent supporters collecting their tickets – including our oldest season ticket holder and a teenage boy, a minor, who were subjected to disgusting foul and abusive language. "I have always supported peaceful protest, so long as it shows complete respect to innocent members of the public. "What happened on Saturday was nothing short of a disgrace. "Not only were our decent supporters abused, but members of North Lanarkshire Council and club staff carrying out their match day duties. "That is all completely unacceptable and will not be tolerated. "We are taking steps now to ban the ringleaders of that shocking behaviour from all our matches indefinitely. "We are well aware that Accies fans did not want to move away from Hamilton. "Neither did any member of the board. But we have already explained why staying at New Douglas Park was impossible. "No other location in Hamilton was suitable so the temporary move to Broadwood was necessary. "We have a two-year lease with an option for a further year. During that time we shall do everything possible to identify and develop a new site in Hamilton. "Meanwhile, we trust that all good Accies supporters will share the board's dismay and anger at the appalling behaviour on Saturday." SunSport has contacted Police Scotland for comment. On the pitch, Hamilton won the match 2-0 thanks to goals from Oli Shaw and Charlie Telfer, the latter of whom was playing as a trialist. Hamilton travel to take on Queen of the South in their next match on Saturday afternoon. Keep up to date with ALL the latest news and transfers at the Scottish Sun football page

Drivers lose up to 565 hours of their lives to pesky car admin, survey finds

A poll of 2,000 drivers revealed that, on average, they spend a full day (24 hours) each year thinking about service schedules, MOTs, and potential issues. In fact, over the past year, drivers reported having to change plans for an average of four events due to undetected car issues. The research was commissioned by BMW, whose Proactive Care service is designed to reduce time spent thinking about vehicle upkeep. It uses real-time vehicle data to alert drivers to potential issues before they become problems. To bring this to life and raise awareness of the technology affording drivers greater peace of mind, BMW created a striking clock visual, sculpted in sand using car tyres, to symbolise the precious hours that could be reclaimed. Werner Pagenstert, spokesperson for BMW Group UK, said: 'Time is the ultimate luxury and shouldn't be lost to car admin or unplanned maintenance. "Smart technology can help drivers reclaim those 565 lost hours and spend more time doing the things that matter most to them.' The study also found nearly half of drivers (46 per cent) say motoring admin takes up valuable headspace. Many still rely on traditional methods to stay organised, with more than half (52 per cent) using diaries to manage service schedules, while 37 per cent wait for a dashboard alert before taking action, and 37 per cent actively delay visits to the garage. The impact this admin has on enjoyment is significant, with two thirds (68 per cent) of motorists saying they'd enjoy driving more with greater peace of mind. Final days for Nissan drivers to claim $5k from 'defect' settlement – you can get multiple payouts by filling in form This comes as the average Brit spends only a tenth of their day doing what they actually want to do, with the rest absorbed by obligations and life admin. When asked how they'd prefer to use time reclaimed from car-related admin, a third (33 per cent) said they'd read more, 32 per cent would prioritise exercise, and a quarter (25 per cent) would book themselves a much-needed holiday. For many, getting away from it all is key - 37 per cent crave more trips and holidays to escape daily pressures and one in five (20 per cent) admit that these occasions are the only time they can switch off from everyday stress and life admin. As a quarter (24 per cent) said true relaxation only comes once they're physically away from their everyday stresses. BMW Proactive Care has partnered with the Seren Collection hotels in Wales to offer one driver a chance to win a two-night luxury stay for two, complete with a tasting menu experience and use of an all-electric car for the duration of the trip. Spokesman Werner Pagenstert added: 'With so many people valuing this quality time away, we wanted to offer drivers the chance to do exactly that. 'And we're hoping to help people make the most of those precious hours that can be reclaimed from irritating admin and car maintenance.'
