Disney World Is Shutting Down One Part of Its ‘Star Wars' Experience

Gizmodo22-07-2025
Another Walt Disney World attraction will be making way for something new at Hollywood Studios. Star Wars Launch Bay will be closing down for good and will be replaced by The Magic of Disney Animation .
The Disney Parks Blog news follows the final days of Muppet*Vision 3-D and the courtyard closure to begin construction for the new Monsters Inc. Monstropolis area and attraction. The Launch Bay area has been overdue for some sprucing, and really, once Galaxy's Edge opened, its days were clearly numbered. Because at that point was there really a need for the curated Lucasfilm memorabilia and character meet-and-greet spot?
Harkening back to what Hollywood Studios is about, The Magic of Disney Animation is a much-needed attraction that feels like a no-brainer. When the park opened as Disney MGM Studios, it served as a satellite arm of the animation studio where films such as Mulan and Lilo & Stitch were made. Park guests were able to tour areas to see the films in process as part of that experience. So it's good to see the parks division pay homage to the 'Hollywood' part of the park this way. © Disney Experiences
Mickey's Sorcerer Hat returns—though this time it's more in line with how it looks at Walt Disney Animation HQ in Burbank, CA. And once inside, guests experience the studio with a bit of pixie dust that makes the characters we know and love come to life to guide them along on a tour of sorts while the artists are away.
Each department will be presented through participatory entertainment led by familiar faces, much like how they came to life in the Disney 100 short 'Once Upon a Studio.' There will also be a Mary Blair-inspired playground and, of course, character meet-and-greets. The refurb is expected to wrap up by its planned opening sometime in 2026.

‘King of the Hill' co-creator says Hollywood often treats southerners ‘as a sort of caricature'

During an interview with Texas Monthly on Monday, "King of the Hill" co-creators Mike Judge and Greg Daniels explained how they aimed to portray their Southern characters with 'dignity,' rather than relying on the typical caricature of Southern Americans. Judge, who grew up in New Mexico, right next door to Texas, explained how he and Daniels wished to break from the stereotypical portrayal of Southerners when they created "King of the Hill" back in 1997. "From the beginning, Greg and I wanted to like these characters. We're on their side. A lot of Hollywood treats anyone with a Southern accent as a sort of caricature. We were real conscious of treating these characters with dignity," he told the outlet. Daniels noted that people tend to feel "seen" when creators actually do their research on the group of people they are portraying in their shows, and accurately depict the subtle nuances of their lives. When Daniels began his work on another hit television show, "The Office," he was met with skepticism from the people of Scranton, Pennsylvania, where the show is based, fearing that the show would simply make fun of the blue-collar city and its residents. "People feel seen when you've done the research. I took that spirit into The Office," he noted. "The people of Scranton were worried in the beginning, because they were used to being made fun of. And I was like, 'No, I'm coming off of King of the Hill. We try to do stories that get it right.'" Saladin K. Patterson, the showrunner for the upcoming "King of the Hill" revival, recalled an interview with a voice actor from Singapore — who was also a huge fan of the show — and shared his thoughts on the creators' portrayal of Southerners. "We were interviewing a voice actor who grew up in Singapore and was a big fan of 'King of the Hill,' and he said it was one of the few American shows that the Singapore government would let them watch," he explained. "We asked him, 'Did that give you a particular view of Southern America?' And he was like, 'We didn't know they were Southern. We just thought they were American.' To people outside of the country, King of the Hill actually represents America." With many of the TV shows in the late 90s and early 2000s casting fathers as clueless and out of the loop, the "King of the Hill" creators decided to take their TV dad, Hank Hill, in a different direction. "Certainly when we were doing it, every TV dad was the fat dummy. And we were like, 'Let's jump back to 'Father Knows Best,'" Daniels recalled. This philosophy wasn't just applied to the show's father figure, it was also applied to the show's mother, Peggy Hill, according to Judge. "It seemed a little rebellious, and then when [voice actor Kathy Najimy] started playing Peggy in a certain way, it became fun to have her be wrong sometimes, and go a little crazy," he said. "King of the Hill" ran from 1997 to 2010 and is being revived with a new season in August.

Lamar Jackson becomes second Louisville football player to join Madden's 99 Club

For the first time in his NFL career, Baltimore Ravens quarterback Lamar Jackson has earned his way into the Madden video game franchise's 99 Club. EA Sports announced July 28 Jackson would be among the members of The 99 Club in Madden 26. The former Louisville quarterback is one of seven players earning the honor this year, marking the most since Madden 19's release ahead of the 2018 NFL season. Jackson's inclusion in The 99 Club comes after he racked up 5,087 total yards and 45 total touchdowns while leading the Ravens to a 12-5 regular-season record. He led the league both in passer rating (119.6) and QBR (77.3) while his interception percentage of 0.8% was second-best in the league behind only Justin Herbert (0.6%). Jackson's stellar performance allowed him to finish second in the league's MVP voting for 2024 behind Buffalo Bills quarterback Josh Allen. It was also enough to get him into The 99 Club, about which he expressed excitement while receiving a flashy chain honoring his induction into the exclusive fraternity. "Aye, this is crazy," Jackson said of the chain. "I appreciate you guys. Shoutout to Madden for putting me in the 99 club again. Let's get ready for this season." Jackson's previous high rating came in Madden 25, when he earned a preseason mark of 98 overall. He has had a rating of at least 91 in five of the last six Madden releases, with his 87 rating in Madden 23 serving as the outlier. Jackson joined linebacker Ray Lewis, offensive tackle Jonathan Ogden and safety Ed Reed as the only Ravens players to be a part of Madden's 99 Club. The veteran quarterback is also the second Louisville product to earn the honor; former Philadelphia Eagles kicker David Akers was the first to do so in Madden 06. "The Fantastic Four: First Steps" holds its lead atop the box office

Film Review - The Fantastic Four: First Steps LOS ANGELES (AP) — Marvel's first family stumbled in theaters in its second weekend, but still held on to the top spot at the box office. 'The Fantastic Four: First Steps' earned $40 million from 4,125 North American theaters, a 66% drop from a healthy $117.6 million debut. The film was accompanied by comedies 'The Bad Guys 2' and 'The Naked Gun" in the top three box office rankings. The superhero movie dipped significantly more than Marvel's previous film, 'Thunderbolts,' which took a 55% dive in its second weekend. 'First Steps' is the last major blockbuster of the summer. It added nearly $40 million internationally in its second weekend, bringing thefilm's global total to $369 million. The movie's box office drop off was surprising given its strong reviews, said Paul Dergarabedian, senior media analyst for the data firm Comscore. Though the movie's debut weekend may have given box office results a strong push toward the $4 billion summer benchmark, August is off to a slow start, he said. 'It's a tough lift, but we might be able to get there. It really means that all the films are gonna have to stand on their own,' Dergarabedian said. 'It's gonna be about getting great reviews, having that staying power, that longevity in the marketplace.' Newcomer comedy 'The Bad Guys 2' earned second place at the box office this weekend, with $22 million from 3,852 North American theaters. That was on par with projections and also in line with the first movie in the series, which brought in $23 million in 2022. Paramount's slapstick comedy, 'The Naked Gun,' also in its debut weekend, snagged the third box office spot, earning $17 million from 3,344 locations. Jim Orr, president of domestic distribution for Universal Pictures, said the solid debut for 'The Bad Guys 2,' coupled with strong audience reaction scores, 'should point to a very long, very successful run through not only the rest of the summer, but really, I think into the fall." James Gunn's 'Superman,' which opened four weekends ago and already crossed $550 million globally, earned $13.8 million domestically this weekend, taking the fourth spot. 'Jurassic World Rebirth' followed with $8.7 million. The horror movie 'Together' had a strong debut weekend, coming in at sixth place and earning $6.8 million domestically, proof that August is a month for edgier and off-beat films, Dergarabedian said. 'That's what this month is about. It's not just about box office," Dergarabedian said. "It's also about providing really interesting, rewarding movie-going experiences for audiences.' Dergarabedian said he expects highly-anticipated movies hitting theaters in the next few weeks — including 'Freakier Friday,' and Zach Cregger's horror movie 'Weapons' — to give August a needed boost. The box office is currently up 9.5% from last year. Top 10 movies by domestic box office With final domestic figures being released Monday, this list factors in the estimated ticket sales for Friday through Sunday at U.S. and Canadian theaters, according to Comscore: 1. 'The Fantastic Four: First Steps," $40 million. 2. 'The Bad Guys 2,' $22.2 million. 3. 'The Naked Gun,' $17 million. 4. 'Superman,' $13.8 million. 5. 'Jurassic World Rebirth,' $8.7 million. 6. 'Together,' $6.8 million. 7. 'F1: The Movie,' $4.1 million. 8. 'I Know What You Did Last Summer,' $2.7 million. 9. 'Smurfs,' $1.8 million. 10. 'How to Train Your Dragon,' $1.4 million.
