RCMP search for man who escaped vehicle during arrest in Chemawawin Cree Nation
RCMP say they arrested Roberto Easter, 30, for breaching conditions of a release order at an Airport Road home in Chemawawin Cree Nation around 3:30 p.m. local time Monday. He was put in handcuffs and placed in the back of a police vehicle, police said in a news release on Tuesday.
Before Easter was taken to the RCMP detachment, a a 28-year-old woman who knows him went up to the police vehicle, helping him escape, police said. Easter, from Chemawawin, was last seen fleeing into nearby dense brush.
A search for Easter is now underway, but police say there is no threat to public safety.
Chemawawin Cree Nation is about 400 kilometres north of Winnipeg.
The 28-year-old woman, who's also from Chemawawin, was arrested and charged with escaping lawful custody, resisting/obstructing police officers and uttering threats.

Article content Article content Lich and Barber were key figures behind the convoy protest that occupied downtown Ottawa for three weeks beginning in late January 2022 to protest vaccine mandates and other pandemic measures. Article content The protest ended after the federal government invoked the Emergencies Act for the first time ever. The convoy was cleared out of Ottawa's downtown core in a three-day police operation that began on Feb. 18. Ontario Court Justice Heather Perkins-McVey said she found Lich and Barber guilty of mischief because they routinely encouraged people to join or remain at the protest, despite knowing the adverse effects it was having on downtown residents and businesses. Article content Barber also was found guilty of counselling others to disobey a court order for telling people to ignore a judge's injunction directing convoy participants to stop honking their truck horns. Lich was not charged with that offence. Article content Article content In a separate Ottawa-based trial for Pat King, another convoy leader, the Crown sought a sentence of 10 years in prison for mischief and disobeying a court order. Article content King was sentenced in February to three months of house arrest, 100 hours of community service at a food bank or men's shelter and a year of probation. Article content He received nine months credit for time served before his conviction. Article content Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre criticized the Crown's sentencing proposals for Lich and Barber. In a social media post Monday, Poilievre compared the sentencing range to sentences for other crimes and asked, 'How is this justice?' Article content While it's quite rare for elected officials to comment directly on a sentencing hearing, Poilievre's message was echoed by several other prominent Conservatives. Article content Deputy Conservative leader Melissa Lantsman called the Crown's proposed sentence 'political vengeance not actual justice.'

Sault police seek info on serious crash that injured e-scooter driver
The Sault Ste. Marie Police Service is seeking witnesses or dash cam footage of a serious collision that took place July 18. A motor vehicle and an e-scooter collided around 9:30 p.m. at the intersection of McNabb Street and Great Northern Road. 'The operator of the e-scooter sustained life-threatening physical injuries and was transported to hospital,' police said in a news release Wednesday. 'The driver of the motor vehicle did not sustain physical injuries.' Anyone who witnessed the collision or who has relevant dash cam or surveillance footage is asked to contact Const. North Bay police seek suspect in copper wire theft

Theft in industrial area The incident occurred over the weekend, in a secured outdoor area on Commerce Crescent in one of the city's industrial districts. Authorities say the suspect entered the restricted area and stole an undisclosed amount of copper wire. 'The estimated value of the stolen property has not yet been determined,' said North Bay police spokesperson Jennifer Cross, in an email to 'The matter is currently under active investigation,' said police in a news release.
