Contentious session ends, House adjourned

Time of India4 days ago
Porvorim:
The Goa legislative assembly was adjourned sine die by speaker Ramesh Tawadkar on Friday, bringing to a close a hectic 15-day monsoon session. The session, which saw frequent clashes between the opposition and the treasury benches, resulted in the passage of several laws.
During the session, 4,226 questions were taken up, with 896 being starred questions and 3,330 being un-starred questions. Some questions were deferred to the next session.
The House also witnessed debates on 30 calling attention motions moved by legislators, said Tawadkar.
The most contentious bill to be passed was the Goa Legislative Diploma No. 2070 dated April 15, 1961, (Amendment) Bill, 2025, which paves the way for govt to regularise unauthorised houses constructed before Feb 28, 2014, on comunidade land.
The passage of the bill saw the angriest protests in the well of the House and prompted Tawadkar to adjourn the House twice during the discussions that went into the dead of the night.
Despite the acrimony witnessed over the two days, opposition leader Yuri Alemao and chief minister Pramod Sawant acknowledged the contributions of each side towards Goa's development.
'Let us take Goa in a direction that it needs to be taken,' said Alemao.

‘Mystery call' tells Malda man of return of son pushed to B'desh

Kolkata/Malda: Pushed into Bangladesh illegally on June 28 by Rajasthan Police and BSF, 22-year-old Malda migrant labourer Amir Sheikh has been brought back to an undisclosed location in India. Bengal govt said it has not been "officially" informed of the development. The news came a day ahead of Calcutta High Court's hearing of a habeas corpus plea moved by Amir's father, Jiyem Sk. Jiyem had alleged that his youngest son was "secretly deported to Bangladesh". On Tuesday, Jiyem told TOI: "We received two anonymous calls informing us that Amir has returned to India. When we wanted to know more, the calls were disconnected. The caller only said he would say as much. We are hoping and praying for Amir's safe return." Malda South Congress MP Isha Khan Chowdhury also told reporters in Delhi that Amir was back in India, hinting that some legal processes were pending. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Back Pain Treatments That Might Surprise You! The development caps several tumultuous months for Amir, whose viral video from Bangladesh on July 2, sobbing inconsolably and pleading for help, prompted strong reactions in Bengal. According to the petition in HC, on April 3, Amir migrated to Paradip in Odisha and then to Sikar in Rajasthan in search of livelihood. He was employed in Rajasthan as a labourer. On June 25, Rajasthan Police officers, accompanied by armed BSF personnel, conducted an identity-verification drive at Amir's worksite and "forcibly detained him without any communication of grounds or procedural safeguards". He was held in a detention facility outside Sikar. On June 28, he was allegedly pushed to Bangladesh. Islam said: "Interestingly, there was no way to repatriate Amir except through legal intervention, as he was tagged under a case involving illegal entry into Bangladesh. Central govt is now trying to repatriate Amir to his Malda home to save face." A senior official said Amir, once back in India, has to be produced in a local court so that the charges labelling him as an illegal Bangladeshi are dismissed. Rajya Sabha uproar: Mallikarjun Kharge raises Bihar voter rolls, JP Nadda counters

The Rajya Sabha continued to witness disruptions on Tuesday, with Opposition members demanding a discussion on the special intensive revision (SIR) of electoral rolls in Bihar, prompting deputy chairman Harivansh to adjourn the House till 2 pm soon after the papers were laid on the table. The House was adjourned again to meet at 3 pm. Once the proceedings resumed, leader of the House JP Nadda countered leader of the Opposition Mallikarjun Kharge after the Congress leader sought to raise the issue of SIR. BJD's Sasmit Patra, who was in the Chair, allowed sports minister Mansukh Mandaviya to move the National Sports Governance Bill, 2025, and the National Anti-Doping (Amendment) Bill, 2025, for passing. The Opposition MPs urged the chair to allow Kharge to speak. On the Chair's instruction, Kharge rose and sought to speak on SIR. After Patra's objection, the Opposition walked out. Nadda countered Kharge and said the Opposition did not believe in healthy democracy. After the Opposition walked out, the government discussed and passed the National Sports Governance Bill, 2025, the National Anti-Doping (Amendment) Bill, 2025, the Income Tax Bill, 2025, and the Taxation Laws (Amendment) Bill, 2025.

SP expels partyman involved in Fatehpur incident?

Lucknow: Fatehpur district president of Samajwadi Party , Surendra Prarap Singh, on Tuesday expelled party functionary Pappu Singh Chauhan of Hussainganj. As per the official memo issued by Surendra Singh, Pappu was expelled for anti- party activity. However reports said Chauhan's name has figured as an accused in the Fatehpur incident. Unconfirmed reports said he was part of the mob that hoisted saffron flags atop the mausoleum. On Tuesday, a video surfaced on social media where a man identifying himself as Pappu Singh Chauhan announced that he has resigned from SP because the party had betrayed his trust. He said in Fatehpur district the party was being run by Muslims. Claiming to be a Hindu and a Sanatani, Chauhan in the video said he will always raise issues concerning the Hindus irrespective of the objections raised by "them" - in an apparent reference to SP's Fatehpur district unit. It could not be verified if the man in the video was the same Pappu Singh Chauhan who was expelled from SP. Or, the same person named in the FIR in connection with Fatehpur incident.
