‘Mystery call' tells Malda man of return of son pushed to B'desh
Bengal govt said it has not been "officially" informed of the development. The news came a day ahead of Calcutta High Court's hearing of a habeas corpus plea moved by Amir's father, Jiyem Sk. Jiyem had alleged that his youngest son was "secretly deported to Bangladesh".
On Tuesday, Jiyem told TOI: "We received two anonymous calls informing us that Amir has returned to India. When we wanted to know more, the calls were disconnected.
The caller only said he would say as much. We are hoping and praying for Amir's safe return."

Bengal Migrant Workers' Welfare Board chairperson and Rajya Sabha MP Samirul Islam said: "Because of the immense pressure that we exerted — both legally and administratively — they are now on the back foot and attempting to bring Amir Sheikh back through the back door with the help of BSF."
Malda South Congress MP Isha Khan Chowdhury also told reporters in Delhi that Amir was back in India, hinting that some legal processes were pending.

Kaliachak-I BDO Satyajit Halder also said he was aware of such reports but had no official confirmation. The development caps several tumultuous months for Amir, whose viral video from Bangladesh on July 2, sobbing inconsolably and pleading for help, prompted strong reactions in Bengal.
According to the petition in HC, on April 3, Amir migrated to Paradip in Odisha and then to Sikar in Rajasthan in search of livelihood.
He was employed in Rajasthan as a labourer. On June 25, Rajasthan Police officers, accompanied by armed BSF personnel, conducted an identity-verification drive at Amir's worksite and "forcibly detained him without any communication of grounds or procedural safeguards". He was held in a detention facility outside Sikar.
On June 28, he was allegedly pushed to Bangladesh.
Islam said: "Interestingly, there was no way to repatriate Amir except through legal intervention, as he was tagged under a case involving illegal entry into Bangladesh. Central govt is now trying to repatriate Amir to his Malda home to save face."
A senior official said Amir, once back in India, has to be produced in a local court so that the charges labelling him as an illegal Bangladeshi are dismissed.

Vacate govt bungalow, pay Rs 46L dues, activist tells former Maharashtra minister Munde
Mumbai: Social activist Anjali Damania on Wednesday demanded that former Maharashtra minister and NCP MLA Dhananjay Munde vacate his official bungalow in Mumbai within 48 hours and claimed he owes Rs 46 lakh to the state government for using the residence. Damania warned if Munde fails to vacate the bungalow, 'Satpuda', and pay Rs 46 lakh in pending dues, she will send a legal notice to the state government. "Munde had claimed earlier that he did not own a house in Mumbai, but his 2024 election affidavit mentions a flat at Girgaum Chowpatty which is currently not in use. It is, therefore, wrong for him to continue occupying the official bungalow. He should also pay the full rent amount of Rs 46 lakh," she told reporters here. Munde's resignation in early March came in the backdrop of the arrest of his key aide in connection with the chilling murder of a village sarpanch in Beed district in December. Munde had previously said he could not leave the bungalow as he did not have another place to stay in Mumbai. However, Damania pointed out that the NCP leader's 2024 election affidavit referred to a flat in a building named 'Virbhavan', measuring 2,151 square feet, which appeared to be a four-bedroom apartment. The activist argued that as per law, Munde must vacate the government bungalow immediately as he is no longer a cabinet minister. Damania said she would send a legal notice to the state government over the issue. If Munde failed to comply within 48 hours, she said she would question the government's inaction and press for recovery of the dues along with his eviction from the bungalow. Sources close to the former state minister maintained that his current home in Mumbai is under renovation and hence he has requested the government to allow him to stay in the official bungalow till the work is completed. BSF seizes 95kg ganja, 510 bottles of cough syrup in West Bengal border raid
Kolkata: In a major haul, BSF South Bengal Frontier seized 95 kilograms of Ganja and 510 bottles of Wincerex and foiled an attempt to smuggle narcotics along the Indo–Bangladesh international border in West Bengal's North 24 Parganas district. The troops of the 143 Battalion of BSF South Bengal Frontier's Tarali-1 Border Outpost on Wednesday laid an ambush near a papaya orchard and initiated stringent surveillance in the border areas. In the wee hours of Wednesday, at around 3.40 am, the troops spotted 5–6 'suspicious individuals carrying loads on their heads and moving toward the international border through paddy fields', BSF said in a statement. 'The troops immediately challenged them to stop and advanced quickly towards them. Fearing capture, the smugglers panicked and threw down their goods and fled toward Swaroopdah village taking cover of darkness and bushes.' 'The BSF conducted a thorough search operation in the area and recovered six plastic sacks. They recovered a total of 95 kilograms of Ganja, packed in 109 packets and 510 bottles of Wincerex on further examination of these sacks,' BSF said. The seized narcotics will be handed over to the concerned department after completing the necessary legal formalities, sources told ET. N K Pandey, Public Relations Officer of the South Bengal Frontier, stated that 'BSF personnel are performing their duties with full alertness and commitment to prevent smuggling along the India–Bangladesh border. As a result of their continuous and strategic actions, major smuggling attempts are being thwarted.'

Bangladeshi man illegally living in India for 19 years held at Mumbai airport
Mumbai, Aug 13 (PTI) A Bangladeshi national illegally living in India for the past 19 years was arrested at the Mumbai airport while trying to fly to Saudi Arabia on an Indian passport, secured through fake documents, an official said on Wednesday. According to the Sahar police official, Aktaruzzaman Aman Ullah, had earlier stayed in Saudi Arabia on a work permit using his 'Indian" identity. Aktaruzzaman entered the country from Bangladesh through the 24 South Pargana district of West Bengal in 2006. He subsequently got bogus documents to show himself as an Indian and even got a passport in 2015, the official said. The man lost the passport in 2018 but again managed to get another issued from Kolkata, he said. In 2020, Aktaruzzaman went to Saudi Arabia and spent five years there on a work visa. He returned to India on May 18 this year and flew to Bangladesh on May 29. After spending around a month, he flew to Mumbai on June 26. However, Aktaruzzaman ran out of luck on Tuesday before attempting to board a flight to Dammam in Saudi Arabia, the official said. Finding that Aktaruzzaman had recently travelled to Bangladesh, the immigration officer sought to know the purpose of his visit. However, Aktaruzzaman could not provide a satisfactory answer. The immigration team then interrogated him. Unable to withstand sustained questioning, Aktaruzzaman told the immigration staff that he was a Bangladeshi national and had been illegally living in India since 2006. The man was taken to the Sahar police station and arrested under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, the Passport Act and the Foreigners Act. Further investigation is underway, the official added.
