A major success: Naxal husband-wife duo surrender in Chhattisgarh; drove cadre motivation and fresh recruitments
Two senior naxal operatives, a husband-wife duo, involved in the ideological and propaganda machinery of the outlawed
CPI
, surrendered before security forces in Chhattisgarh on Wednesday, officials confirmed.
Jeevan Tulavi, 45, and his wife Agasha, 35, gave themselves up in the Maoist-affected Mohla-Manpur-Ambagarh Chowki district, around 180 km from state capital Raipur. Both had been active in the rebel ranks for over two decades and held major roles in the Maad division of the organisation.
Tulavi, also known as Ram Tulavi, was the divisional committee member (DVCM) and was working as education team commander in Maad division (Abujhmad), a remote, forested stretch known for long-standing Naxal activity.
Agasha, alias Aarti Korram, was a key member of the press team and also worked as commander of the Chetna Natya Mandali (CNM), the outfit's cultural wing.
The state police had placed a bounty of Rs 8 lakh on Tulavi, who joined the Maoist ranks in 2008 as a military operative in south Rajnandgaon. By 2012, he had shifted to ideological training, working through mobile political schools (MOPOS) to spread Left Wing Extremist (LWE) ideology across villages in Abujhmad.

His wife, Agasha, originally from Telitola village, was a singer, dancer, poet, orator and a song composer since 2000 and was operating computers and drafting press releases for the LWEs, officials told PTI.
The surrender was accepted in the presence of Rajnandgaon range inspector general of police Abhishek Shandilya, superintendent of police Y P Singh, and ITBP 27th Battalion Commandant Vivek Kumar Pandey.
Officials hailed the development as a 'major success' in the government's intensified anti-naxalite drive.
The region borders Chhattisgarh's Kanker and Maharashtra's Gadchiroli districts — both active naxal zones. The Union government has set a deadline of March 2026 to root out naxal insurgency from the country, under which intensified operations are underway.

‘Fought single-handedly': Kerala CM defends CPI-M leader after remarks on Emergency sparks row
Communist Party of India (Marxist) state secretary M V Govindan's remarks about the outfit joining hands with the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh during the Emergency has put the ruling party on the back foot a day before by-election in Nilambur assembly seat, prompting Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan to defend the statement. Nilambur will vote Thursday. Referring to Govindan's remarks, Vijayan said that 'the CPI (M) had fought against the Emergency single-handedly'. This comes after the Congress claimed Govindan's statement was 'a passionate appeal to its one-time friend RSS seeking its help in the by-election. The Opposition party stepped up its campaign that 'unholy nexus between CPI(M) and BJP' exists in the bypoll. Addressing the media Wednesday evening, Vijayan said: 'There was no relation of any sort between the CPI(M) and RSS during the Emergency. When political parties which fought against the Emergency, formed Janata Party as a larger alliance, Jan Sangh (political wing of RSS till 1977) also merged in that party. However, the CPI(M) had not merged into the Janata Party. The CPI(M) had fought on its own against the Emergency'. In a TV interview Tuesday, Govindan said: 'RSS is communal…during the Emergency we had joined hands with them. It is a reality. We are not afraid of telling the truth'. On Wednesday, a day after the remark kicked up a storm, Govindan issued a clarification saying that he had spoken of a situation 'when the entire country stood together against Emergency'. 'Various political streams move together to oppose the Emergency. CPI(M) had never entered into an alliance with RSS,' he said. But the remarks gave ammunition to the Congress, which called it a last-minute attempt to woo Bharatiya Janata Party's votes in Nilambur. While the BJP has handpicked Mohan George, a local Christian leader and a former leader of regional Christina party Kerala Congress, as the National Democratic Alliance candidate in Nilambur, Akhil Bharat Hindu Maha Sabha has declared its support for CPI(M) candidate M Swaraj. To win back the Hindu votes, the CPI(M) has been highlighting Jamaat-e-Islami's support for Congress candidate Aryadan Shoukath. In his remarks, the Congress-led Opposition Leader V D Satheesan claimed the CPI(M) 'was trying to create Islamophobia'. 'This appeal on the eve of voting is meant to get Sangh Parivar votes. The CPI(M)-BJP affair is evident in the by-election. BJP had been reluctant to field a candidate. CPI(M) has no right to question Jamaat-e-Islami support for Congress. Govindan himself had won elections in the past with Jamaat-e-Islami support,' he said.

CBI nabs 2 CMPF staff for bribe in Dhanbad
Dhanbad: The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on Wednesday arrested two employees of the Coal Mines Provident Fund (CMPF) while accepting a bribe of Rs 20,000 from the son of a retired Bharat Coking Coal Limited (BCCL) employee. Sources in the central investigative agency said that PF clerk Dhiraj Nishad and section officer Vishnu Prasad Gupta had allegedly demanded Rs 20,000 from the son of a retired BCCL staff to process the pension-related work of his father. CBI superintendent of police PK Jha said, "Two teams executed a coordinated trap based on the complaint. One team arrested clerk Dhiraj Nishad from the Bastakola office of the BCCL. During interrogation, he revealed that section officer Vishnu Prasad Gupta had instructed him to demand the bribe." "Acting upon this statement, another team approached Gupta pretending to be a relative of the complainant and offered the bribe. Gupta was caught red-handed while accepting the cash," he added. Both accused were taken to the CBI office for further interrogation. Strict action would be taken against the guilty, SP Jha stated.

Bribery probe: Properties linked to IAS officer Chakma searched
1 2 3 Bhubaneswar: Days after arresting IAS officer Dhiman Chakma, a resident of Tripura, on charges of accepting a bribe of Rs 10 lakh from a stone miner in Kalahandi district, the Odisha vigilance directorate on Wednesday conducted simultaneous searches at properties linked to his family and relatives in Tripura and Himachal Pradesh. Three teams carried out verification and searches at the residence of Chakma at Kanchanpur in North Tripura and at houses of his in-laws at Saminala in Kullu district and Rangbey in Lahaul and Spiti district in Himachal. "Relevant documents related to deposits and investments in banks and other financial instruments among others were collected and scrutinised during the house search. Details of other movable and immovable assets are being ascertained from disproportionate assets (DA) angle," an official vigilance statement read. Chakma, a 2021-batch IAS officer, on his first posting as sub-collector in Dharamgarh, was arrested on June 8 at his official residence in Kalahandi, while receiving Rs 10 lakh — the initial instalment of a Rs 20 lakh demand — from one Harsha Bardhan Behera, who owns a stone crusher unit, the agency said. Subsequent searches at his quarters led to a stash of Rs 47 lakh in cash. "We are trying to find out the sources through which he accumulated the huge ill-gotten cash. If anyone paid him bribes previously, they should help us gather more evidence against him," an officer said. Following his suspension on June 10, Chakma remains in judicial custody.
