Prime Minister Narendra Modi
, commenced operations on Sunday. Designed to accommodate 20 lakh passengers annually, it is equipped with state-of-the-art facilities.
On Sunday, the first set of passengers who arrived on a flight from Chennai were received by airport officials with roses at the terminal. Sweets were also distributed to the first group who boarded the flight to Chennai.
Various art, mural works, and sculptures showcasing Tamil Nadu's culture are on display at the new terminal building. "Cultural art forms such as Silambattam and Oyilattam along with art depictions of freedom fighters such as Mahakavi Bharathiyar and V O Chidambaranar are placed at various spots in the departure and arrival areas.
We also have a 15m high mural depicting how Tirunelveli and Tuticorin were in the olden days," added an official.
Land has already been acquired nearby, and further expansion can be done if needed, but the new terminal building should suffice for at least the next 20-25 years, he said.
It was on July 26 that the PM launched the new terminal building, built at a cost of Rs450 crore, along with a slew of other infrastructure projects. Modi had then said that the terminal building will become a game changer for commerce and connectivity in southern Tamil Nadu.

India presses for global 'code of conduct' over pilot poaching
India wants countries to agree a new code of conduct on hiring each other's airline staff after raising concerns that its fast-growing aviation system is being stifled by the poaching of Indian pilots and cabin crew without adequate notice. India, one of the world's fastest-growing aviation markets, is wrestling with a shortage of experienced pilots, denting Prime Minister Narendra Modi's aspiration of developing a job-creating global aviation hub. The recent fatal crash of an Air India jetliner has sparked tighter scrutiny of the sector. "This practice creates a vicious cycle where Indian carriers are forced to continuously recruit and train replacement personnel by diverting resources from expansion activities and operational improvements." Live Events The paper was released on the ICAO website ahead of its triennial assembly. It has not previously been reported. India's Civil Aviation Ministry was not immediately available for comment. India's government said in April the country would need 30,000 pilots over the next 15-20 years, up from the current 6,000-7,000, as airlines collectively had more than 1,700 aircraft on order. India's domestic aviation sector is led by IndiGo and Air India, while all major international airlines from Emirates to British Airways to Lufthansa operate regular flights. In 2023, Air India exchanged barbs with Akasa Air over the poaching of pilots domestically. The working paper asks for the creation of a code of conduct on the movement of skilled aviation workers among ICAO's member countries. It doesn't specify how the code of conduct would work. "These challenges cause economic losses that affect Indian carriers' ability to compete in international markets ... and achieve its ambitious target of 300 million domestic passengers by 2030," the paper said. ICAO, which seeks to use consensus to set standards on everything from runways to seat belts, was created after the United States invited more than 50 allies to agree in 1944 to a common air navigation system.

Plea in HC alleges scam in buying 144 SUVs for Punjab's highway patrol
Chandigarh: A public interest litigation (PIL) filed in the Punjab and Haryana high court has alleged large-scale financial irregularities in the purchase of 144 Toyota Hilux vehicles by the Punjab govt in Dec 2023 for its 'Sadak Surakhya Force'. The case was listed for hearing on Thursday, but it did not come up for hearing. It is now expected to be heard on Friday. The petitioner, Ludhiana resident Satnam Singh Dhawan, compared the price at which these vehicles were purchased by the state govt from the manufacturer directly with the price at which such vehicles were available in the market with the dealers during Dec 2023. The petitioner claimed that he found the price at which the state of Punjab purchased these vehicles directly from the manufacturer cost the exchequer an amount to the tune of Rs 10.7 lakh for every such vehicle. He claimed that in other words, for purchasing 144 vehicles, the state paid a minimum of Rs 15.44 crore extra, even if the bulk discount was not available. "Although the financial loss to the state must be, if investigated, much more, in case the bulk discount on the purchase of such a huge quantity of vehicles directly from the manufacturer is available. Thus, it is clear that the middlemen/concerned officer who are party to the purchase of the aforesaid Toyota Hilux vehicles have embezzled a part of the funds meant for purchasing the 144 vehicles," the petition mentioned. The petitioner also claimed to have submitted representations to the director, CBI, seeking investigation but he had not received any response. Mehra will travel to Vietnam for the second schedule for Omung Kumar's Silaa. Bigg Boss 18 and Khatron Ke Khiladi 14 winner Karan Veer Mehra is currently busy shooting for Omung Kumar's Silaa. In this upcoming romantic action thriller, the actor will be seen playing the role of the antagonist. Mehra recently shared that he wants to do exciting work across mediums but is currently focusing on his acting career. Mehra will travel to Vietnam for the second schedule of the film, which also stars Harshvardhan Rane and Sadia Khateeb. He revealed that they had already filmed for 15 days in one of the world's largest caves, which requires a three-day walk to get there. Want To Do Exciting Work In a conversation with the Times of India, he said, 'I want to do exciting work across mediums, but for now, I am concentrating on my film." 'We've already shot for 15 days in one of the biggest caves in the world — only 13–14 people are allowed in at a time. It's a three-day trek to get there," Mehra added. The actor credited his Khatron Ke Khiladi experience and his upbringing in a Mussoorie hostel for preparing him for the trek. He also mentioned that they went through training with a stunt team that included martial arts and drills. 'It's a three-day trek to get there. They were confident because I had done Khatron Ke Khiladi. Plus, I grew up in a Mussoorie hostel, so trekking was a part of my life. But at this age, it's not easy. We went through training with a stunt team that included martial arts and drills," he said. Post-Bigg Boss journey Reflecting on his journey post-Bigg Boss, Karan Veer stated that had these opportunities come earlier, he wouldn't have valued them as much. He also noted that not every Bigg Boss contestant gets such chances. 'Had these things happened earlier, I wouldn't have valued them so much. I know it's transient — if I don't keep working hard, it'll fade. Not every Bigg Boss contestant gets such chances." Selective About Work Karan Veer wishes to be selective about the work he takes on. He said that after the reality show, he didn't do music videos or endorse apps but enrolled in acting workshops to refine his skills. 'Maybe that's why this film came my way. I'm now focusing on acting offers and more workshops." First Look From Silaa In July, the actor posted his first look as Zehraak from the film on Instagram. Along with the poster, he wrote, 'Khud hi khuda, khud hi insaaf! Khauf ka naya naam – ZEHRAAK."
