Tesla applies to supply electricity in UK
LONDON : Tesla's energy subsidiary has applied to become an electricity supplier in Britain, a first such move by tech billionaire Elon Musk's operations outside the US.
A notice on the UK energy regulator's website confirmed a weekend media report that Tesla Energy Ventures Limited had applied for a licence to supply electricity.
The subsidiary of Musk's electric carmaker Tesla currently provides electricity across Texas.
A document formalising the UK application, initially revealed by the Sunday Telegraph, is dated July 18 and signed by Andrew Payne, Tesla's director of energy for Europe.
Tesla Energy, which specialises in solar power and battery storage, did not immediately respond Monday to AFP's request for comment regarding the application on regulator Ofgem's website.
Tesla in 2020 obtained a licence to produce electricity in the UK, notably using solar panels, without selling it directly to consumers.
News of the latest application comes as Tesla suffers a global decline in sales of its cars owing to increased competition and a backlash over Musk's collaboration with US President Donald Trump.
UK registrations of the brand dropped to 987 in July from 2,462 one year earlier, according to trade data.

Images inside the home taken at the time showed the property boasted original stonework, elaborate plaster cornices and ceiling decoration, and a half-barrel vaulted hallway ceiling. The Waleses' move will be a short one from their current main home at Adelaide Cottage in Windsor, and the children attend nearby Lambrook School. They also have homes at Anmer Hall in Norfolk and Apartment 1A in Kensington Palace in London. As heir to the throne, William inherited the Duchy of Cornwall estate, a portfolio of land, property and investments valued at more than £1 billion, when his father became king. 'You liar': Elon Musk and Sam Altman's AI battle erupts on social media
The feud between the two dates back to 2018, when Musk left the OpenAI board. — AFP The long-running rivalry between tech titans Sam Altman and Elon Musk reignited this week with a public clash over Apple's App Store rankings and alleged manipulation of the X algorithm. On Monday night, Musk threatened to sue Apple, accusing the company of "unequivocal antitrust violations" for allegedly giving preferential treatment to OpenAI's ChatGPT, which currently holds the top spot on the US App Store. "Apple is behaving in a manner that makes it impossible for any AI company besides OpenAI to reach #1," Musk wrote. He added that his company, xAI, "will take immediate legal action." Altman, CEO of OpenAI – which he co-founded with Musk in 2015 – quickly fired back. "This is a remarkable claim given what I have heard alleged that Elon does to manipulate X to benefit himself and his own companies and harm his competitors and people he doesn't like," Altman wrote, referencing a 2023 Platformer report detailing how Musk allegedly ordered changes to X's algorithm to boost his own visibility. Since then, he has become one of Altman's most vocal critics, recently refiling a lawsuit in August over OpenAI's partnership with Microsoft. The exchange on Monday soon turned personal. Leipzig snaps up Brazilian striker Romulo to replace Slovenian Sesko who's now with Man United
BERLIN, Aug 15 — RB Leipzig on Friday announced the signing of Brazilian striker Romulo from Turkish side Goztepe to replace Benjamin Sesko, who has left for Manchester United. Romulo, 23, has signed until 2030 for a reported fee of 25 million euros (US$29.2 million) including bonuses. Leipzig badly needed a forward after Sesko's big-money move to United. The Slovenian, 22, reportedly cost United 85 million euros. Romulo scored 13 times and laid on nine assists in 29 league matches last campaign. Leipzig finished seventh last season, missing out on European football for the first time in the Bundesliga top flight, and have undergone a rebuild in Jurgen Klopp's first off-season as Red Bull's global head of football.
