New twist to Bulls coach saga

Johan Ackermann, the favourite to replace Jake White as Vodacom Bulls head coach, has received another offer.
According to Rapport, the former Lions coach received a contract extension offer from SA Rugby to continue his work with the Junior Springboks before news broke about White's situation at the Bulls.
White is expected to leave his role – despite having taken the Bulls to three Vodacom URC finals in four seasons and being contracted until 2027 – following reported discontent among senior players and assistant coaches Andries Bekker and Chris Rossouw over White's leadership.
Rapport says the Bulls are expected to confirm White's departure within the next two weeks.
Ackermann joined the Junior Boks as a forwards consultant in January on a six-month deal which was extended by a month to include the World Rugby U20 Championship that starts on Sunday.
The 55-year-old had emerged as a leading candidate for the Loftus job due to his strong relationship with Bulls CEO Edgar Rathbone (who he worked with at the Lions) and president Willem Strauss.
However, two other big names are also in the mix.
Franco Smith, who guided the Glasgow Warriors to the 2024-25 URC title, is under contract until 2026 but is reportedly frustrated by budget constraints and foreign player rules in Scotland.
Johann van Graan, fresh off a historic treble with Bath – winning the EPCR Challenge Cup, English Premiership and Premiership Cup – has a contract until 2030 but is believed to still harbour ambitions of coaching the Bulls and eventually the Springboks.

'It's about not getting ahead of yourself and understanding that there are teams that are going to give us different questions that we need to deal with. 'But I think the lesson we did learn from last year is that yes, you can play well, but it's about being able to perform at the right time — when you need to peak. As a team, we've got to navigate how we peak and be able to deal with the competition as it gets to the business end.' Tsimba expects the nuggety Pumas to ask the Bulls some uncomfortable questions in Sunday's home fixture. The side from Mpumalanga opened with a win over Griquas but fell to the Cheetahs this past weekend. 'They are an interesting team that will definitely bring a different challenge. Bok props in demand: Louw, Du Toit on the move?
Wilco Louw and Thomas du Toit are being chased by two South African unions. Springbok props Wilco Louw and Thomas du Toit are allegedly being hunted by two South African franchises. Louw is currently on contract with the Bulls in Pretoria, while Du Toit is employed by Bath Rugby in England. Both men have featured for the Boks this season, though Du Toit is currently not part of the squad that will feature against Australia in the first two matches of this year's Rugby Championship, due to resting protocols. Louw, however, could be the first-choice tighthead option in the absence of Frans Malherbe during the Rugby Championship. According to Sunday publication Rapport, the Stormers are keen to contract Louw, who has a deal to stay with the Bulls until the end of next season. The 31-year-old previously also played for the Stormers and also featured for Toulon and Harlequins before returning to South Africa and the Bulls in 2023. He has played 18 Tests. The Stormers' current first-choice tighthead is Neethling Fouche, who made his Bok debut this year. Rapport also said on Sunday that the Sharks are interested in getting Du Toit back to Durban, where the 30-year-old played before leaving South Africa after the 2023 Rugby World Cup. Du Toit's versatility — he can play loosehead and tighthead — make him much sought-after. According to Rapport Bordeaux in France are also interested in his services. The Sharks' current prop department includes World Cup winners Ox Nche and Vincent Koch.

Confirmed: Johan Ackermann keeps Jake White's assistants
New Bulls coach Johan Ackermann has retained the assistant coaches who served under his predecessor, Jake White. According to The Citizen, there was speculation about whether the former Lions, Gloucester and Urayasu coach would shake things up at the Bulls following White's divisive final weeks at the Pretoria union, the assistant coaches' role in his removal, and the potential redundancy of forwards coach Andries Bekker. Ackermann keeps Bekker under contract The Bulls were South Africa's most successful union under White, reaching three United Rugby Championship finals in the last four years. But after this season's final defeat to Leinster, White told media he simply could not beat the Irish side with the players he had. It later emerged that players and coaches were unhappy with White's leadership, which followed a more top-down and autocratic style. Assistant coaches Chris Rossouw and Bekker led the way in taking players' grievances directly to the board, which ultimately agreed to part ways with White last month. It did not take long to replace him. Ackermann wrapped up his time consulting the Junior Springboks following their World Rugby U20 Championship win and, on the same day he returned to South Africa, paid a visit to Loftus Versfeld. New Bulls boss brings a different approach Ackermann's coaching career is also filled with accolades – including three SA coach of the year awards and another in Japan – as well as several tournament final defeats. However, he brings a more unified and open approach to coaching. He told media in his first press conference that he wanted to hear players' opinions but made it clear they would still need to earn their places. Earlier today, the Bulls confirmed to The Citizen that Ackermann has opted to keep White's coaching staff under contract. This is especially notable for Bekker, as Ackermann was expected to take a more hands-on role with the forwards – a department where he has previously been instrumental. Ackermann also said he would observe Phiwe Nomlomo as he continues coaching the Bulls' Currie Cup side before making any tactical suggestions. The Bulls currently top the Currie Cup log with 10 points from their first two games. They hammered the Sharks 64–0 at Loftus over the weekend, following a 48–23 win against Western Province in Cape Town the week before.
