Transporters urge govt to simplify retro reflective tape purchase norms

Time of India23-07-2025
Indore: Transporters' association has urged for simplifying the norms for fixing retro-reflective tape on commercial vehicles, alleging that the govt's plan to require reflective tape purchases exclusively from empanelled agencies will lead to a financial burden on transporters.
In a letter to Union transport minister
Nitin Gadkari
, transporters acknowledged the necessity of reflective tape installation on commercial vehicles, but advocated for freedom in sourcing these material from any supplier of their choice. The transporters, under the impression that the purchase of reflective tapes would be allowed only from the empanelled agencies, said that no single company should be given the exclusive right to apply retro-reflective tape.
Executive member of All India Motor Transport Congress (AIMTC) and former president of Indore Truck Operators and Transport Association C L Mukati said, "We understand the importance of the retro-reflective tape, but unnecessarily complicating the norm by mandating the use of tape from only a selected company is unfair. It will also affect the interests of millions of truck operators and vehicle owners."
The association said the transport department has set a deadline for July 30, 2025, for fixing the retro-reflective tape.

"There is no such norm of using the retro-reflective tape from a single agency. It can be from anywhere but not fake. It's a crucial safety feature and can significantly reduce accidents, injuries, and fatalities on roadways," said Indore regional transport officer Pradeep Sharma.

Delta's AI fare strategy: Cheaper flights or high-tech price hikes?

Delta Air Lines is changing how ticket prices are decided by letting artificial intelligence take the wheel. In a bold move, the airline is using AI to help determine airfare on some U.S. domestic routes. While only about 3 per cent of flights are currently covered, Delta plans to expand this AI pricing system to 20 per cent by the end of 2025. This new approach replaces traditional fare setting methods with real time pricing decisions, based on data like travel demand, competitor prices, and booking trends. Delta says the system developed by Israeli tech firm Fetcherr is already boosting revenue and efficiency. How it works: AI-powered dynamic pricing Delta's AI system, developed by Israeli startup Fetcherr, analyzes a wide range of data in real time such as demand trends, market fluctuations, booking pace, and competitor pricing. Rather than using static fare charts, the AI suggests optimal prices that can adapt instantly to changing conditions. Senators Mark Warner, Richard Blumenthal, and Ruben Gallego sent a letter to the airline questioning whether AI driven fare decisions could lead to " surveillance pricing ." Their concern: that AI might use personal data to charge individuals based on their perceived willingness to pay. Delta responds: No personal data used Delta has firmly denied using personal information to set prices. In a statement, the airline clarified that it does not use browsing history, financial details, or customer profiles. Instead, pricing is based on anonymized market data and traditional travel factors like origin, destination, date, seat class, and refundability. 'All customers have access to the same fares,' a Delta spokesperson emphasized. Live Events A broader trend in air travel? Industry analysts suggest this is just the beginning. As airlines compete for profitability in a volatile market, many are likely to adopt AI tools to gain an edge. While dynamic pricing isn't new, the speed and granularity offered by AI raises concerns about fairness and transparency. Consumer rights groups are keeping a close eye on the issue. A new bill in Congress, called the Stop AI Price Gouging and Wage Fixing Act, seeks to ban the use of consumer profiling in pricing and could impact how AI tools like these are used in the future. FAQs Q1. What is Delta's AI pricing system? A1. Delta is using artificial intelligence to set ticket prices based on real-time market data. The system is designed to optimize fares depending on demand, competition, and booking trends. Q2. How could AI-based pricing affect travelers? A2. Travelers may see more frequent changes in fares based on demand and timing. It might get harder to know when you're getting the best deal.

India was fortunate to have a steady growth in this transformative period, says Ashwini Vaishnaw

Geopolitics, geoeconomics and geotechnology are all changing the world order and hugely impacting businesses and economies globally, said Ashwini Vaishnaw, Union Minister for Railway, Information and Broadcasting and Minister of Electronics and Information Technology, in Bengaluru on Tuesday (August 5, 2025). During this transformative period, India was fortunate to have a steady growth, he said while delivering a keynote address virtually to SAP Labs' leadership and employees at the Garman tech major's newly set up SAP Labs India Innovation Park at Devanahalli in the City outskirts. Commenting on India's economic growth and technological advancements in Railways even under challenging times, the Union Minister said, 'From being the 11th largest economy in the world 11 years ago, India is now on track to become the third largest economy soon. Electronics exports have grown 8 times in the last 11 years. Very soon, we will start the production of the first Made in India chip. The Bullet train accelerates from 0-100 kmph in 54 seconds whereas Vande Bharat does it in 52 seconds.'' He further said, as part of the union government's initiatives to democratise compute power, 34,000 GPUs were made available to every student, researcher, and college startups across the country, a provision made through a Public-Private Partnership. Cost of per computing was less than a $ in India when that was $2.5 globally. 'This is the kind of empowerment we are doing for young innovators. We in India decided to democratise access to compute power and in a very interesting public private partnership.' SAP Labs invested €194 million to set up SAP Labs India Innovation Park, on a patch of 41 acres of land, and the facility is expected to create 15,000 jobs for AI innovators. 'SAP's this new facility in Bengaluru is a timely investment in India's growth story. This campus reflects global confidence in India's talent and innovation ecosystem. It will further boost India's position as a trusted technology partner,' Mr. Vaishnaw said. SAP's new innovation campus would reflect global confidence in India's talent and innovation ecosystem, said the minister. Strategically located near Kempegowda International Airport, SAP Labs campus is envisioned as a flagship innovation and R&D hub for India and the broader Asia-Pacific region. Once fully operational, it will house 15,000 professionals, making it SAP's largest office in India, and will anchor Global AI roles in Product Engineering and Customer Services & Delivery, according to company officials. The facility would lead the development of Joule's agentic AI capabilities, reinforcing India's growing role in AI innovation. As a future-ready facility, the campus would also feature a Customer Experience Centre, hybrid collaboration zones, AI labs, startup incubation hubs, hackathon spaces and plenty of green zones.
