Pulp announce ‘More', their first album in 24 years and share lead single ‘Spike Island'

Yahoo10-04-2025
Pulp have announced More, their first album in 24 years, as well as sharing the anthemic lead single 'Spike Island'.
The eighth album from the Sheffield Britpop icons is produced by James Ford and will arrive on June 6, 2025 via Rough Trade Records. It was recorded and mixed at Orbb Studio in Walthamstow, London late last year.
'When we started touring again in 2023, we practiced a new song called 'Hymn of the North' during soundchecks & eventually played it at the end of our second night at Sheffield Arena,' said Jarvis Cocker of the album.
'This seemed to open the floodgates: we came up with the rest of the songs on this album during the first half of 2024. A couple are revivals of ideas from last century. The music for one song was written by Richard Hawley. The music for another was written by Jason Buckle. The Eno family sing backing vocals on a song. There are string arrangements written by Richard Jones & played by the Elysian Collective.
He added: 'These are the facts. We hope you enjoy the music. It was written & performed by four human beings from the North of England, aided & abetted by five other human beings from various locations in the British Isles. No A.I. was involved during the process.'
Of the lead single, the band explained that the idea came from Jason Buckle (Relaxed Muscle) who co-wrote the song and went to Stone Roses' infamous Spike Island gig. Buckle explained that a DJ there shouted, 'Spike Island, come alive!', with the phrase getting into Cocker's mind, despite not going to the gig.
Cocker added that the album is dedicated to Steve Mackey, the band's longtime bassist who died in March 2023.
Limited editions of the album will be available on vinyl. Along with a double LP cut at 45 rpm, which will be exclusive to Pulp's online shop and Rough Trade Records' webstore, there will also be four single-disc colour vinyl pressings that have been both handpicked and named by Jarvis Cocker personally.
You can check out the track-list in full below.

‘Highest 2 Lowest': Are Rotten Tomatoes Reviews High On Denzel Washington Film?

Highest 2 Lowest —Denzel Washington's latest film with director Spike Lee — is new in theaters this weekend. How are Rotten Tomatoes critics reacting to crime drama? Rated R, Highest 2 Lowest opens in limited release on Friday. The official summary for the film reads, 'When a titan music mogul (Denzel Washington), widely known as having the 'best ears in the business'' is targeted with a ransom plot, he is jammed up in a life-or-death moral dilemma. 'Brothers Denzel Washington and Spike Lee reunite for the 5th in their long working relationship for a reinterpretation of the great filmmaker Akira Kurosawa's crime thriller High and Low, now played out on the mean streets of modern day New York City.' Highest 2 Lowest, which staged its world premiere at the 2025 Cannes International Film Festival in May, also stars Jeffrey Wright, A$AP Rocky, Ilfenesh Hadera and Wendell Pierce. As of Thursday, Rotten Tomatoes critics have collectively given Highest 2 Lowest a 92% 'fresh' rating based on 92 reviews. The RT Critics Consensus for the film reads, 'Spike Lee and Denzel Washington remix a classic with vibrantly contemporary results in Highest 2 Lowest, a swaggering thriller that lovingly showcases New York City.' The RT audience summary and Popcornmeter score based on verified user ratings is still pending. What Are Individual Critics Saying About 'Highest 2 Lowest'? Steve Pond of The Wrap is among the top critics on RT who gives Highest 2 Lowest a 'fresh' review on RT, writing, 'Highest 2 Lowest is a mixture of gleaming, professional filmmaking and curious choices. It's a showcase for a classic powerhouse, [Denzel] Washington, and an upstart one, A$AP Rocky.' Robert Daniels of is also high on Highest 2 Lowest, writing in his 'fresh' RT review summary, 'Unabashedly epic, fearlessly funny, and proudly Black, Highest 2 Lowest might derive from a Japanese filmmaker. But its soul clearly resides in [Spike] Lee." Also alluding to Spike Lee's direction of Highest 2 Lowest in his RT review summary is David Rooney of The Hollywood Reporter, who writes, 'The director is in the role of the flashy, panache-y showman here, and he plays it to perfection, delivering a big, highly polished chunk of movie that's pure enjoyment.' Lindsey Bahr of The Associated Press also gives the film a 'fresh' review on RT, but has some reservations, writing, 'Highest 2 Lowest may not reach the heights of some of Lee's best films, but it's the kind film that makes you hope Lee and Washington have more to make together.' John Bleasdale of Time Out is one of the two top critics on RT who have given Highest 2 Lowest a 'rotten' rating to date, writing, '[Spike] Lee has made stunningly good crime thrillers – Clockers and 25th Hour – but like his protagonist, here he appears to be struggling to stay relevant and still use his own unique voice.' Tim Grierson of Screen International is the other top critic on RT who gives Highest 2 Lowest a 'rotten' rating, writing, 'Ultimately, the picture's energetic swirl comes across as slightly hollow, its barrage of themes and impulses never finding harmony.' Highest 2 Lowest opens in limited release in theaters on Friday.

Oasis Charts A Late-In-Career New Top 40 Hit With A Decades-Old Song

More than 15 years after Oasis went on what was expected to be its last concert trek, the Dig Out Your Soul Tour, the band is back together for a string of shows. The Oasis Live 25 Tour began on July 4 and is expected to end in November, with dates spread out across Europe, the United States, Asia, Australia, and South America. The group has wrapped its shows in the United Kingdom for now, but there's still a lot of excitement connected to the legendary Britpop outfit. This frame, many of the band's most successful albums and singles continue to find space on a multitude of charts. The rockers even manage to collect a brand new top 40 hit with a decades-old tune. 'Slide Away' Debuts Inside the Top 40 'Slide Away' launches on the Official Singles chart this week, opening at No. 31. The title is performing well enough on both streaming platforms and digital download storefronts — which both feed into the competitive tally — that it gives the band yet another smash. A Coincidence on the Charts Oasis has now racked up 31 hits on the Official Singles chart. Fittingly, 'Slide Away' opens at No. 31. The group has collected 28 top 40 hits in the country, as only a handful of cuts have missed out on the region that typically defines a proper win. 'Slide Away' Was Never Pushed as a Single 'Slide Away' was never released as a single, but it becomes a top 40 smash in the U.K. this week nonetheless. The tune is featured on the band's debut full-length Definitely Maybe, which dropped in the summer of 1994 and is now more than 30 years old. 'Slide Away' Falls on Sales and Streaming Rankings As 'Slide Away' launches on the Official Singles roster, it also appears on three other tallies, but declines on all of them. The song slips on the Official Streaming, Official Singles Downloads, and Official Singles Sales charts, settling at Nos. 77, 86, and 90, respectively, six weeks into its life on all three tallies. 'Don't Look Back in Anger' and 'Live Forever' Per Official Charts Company rules, Oasis only claims three spaces on the Official Singles chart at the moment, the most allowed per musical act in a lead role at one time. 'Slide Away' joins 'Don't Look Back in Anger' and 'Live Forever,' which dip slightly to Nos. 22 and 27, respectively. Both of those tracks had previously reached the top 10, and 'Don't Look Back in Anger' is counted among Oasis' No. 1s.
