Rivals actor arrested on set 'hopes to return to TV show' after charges dropped

Metro07-07-2025
Rivals actor Nigel Adams has said he hopes he can return to filming the Disney Plus show after charges which he was arrested on set for have been dropped.
The 45-year-old actor was detained by Avon and Somerset Police officers at Berkeley Castle in Gloucestershire last month while filming the Jilly Cooper adaptation.
The extra had been shooting a polo scene and was reportedly led away in cuffs by six police officers while he was still in costume.
The arrest was made during filming for the second series of the hit Disney+ drama, starring Emily Atack and David Tennant.
Adams was later charged with assault occasioning actual bodily harm against his long-term partner Louise Payne in an incident on March 31 this year.
The supporting actor, who has also appeared in Doctor Who and Casualty, pleaded not guilty at Bristol Crown Court on Monday morning (July 7).
The prosecutor Christine Hart said that Louise Payne, who attended the hearing, had 'made it clear she didn't wish to proceed with the case'.
Adams and Payne spoke outside the court and told the PA news agency they were grateful the case had been dropped.
Describing his arrest, Adams said: 'They turned up on set and nicked me like I was a wanted man on the run.
'Now I can get back with my agent and get back on Rivals, hopefully. I still have the costume.'
He added: 'I'm grateful everything has been sorted. We just want to get on with our lives.'

Adams and Payne have been engaged for seven years and are now looking forward to getting married.
Payne said: 'I didn't want to press charges from the beginning. I had to come to court to say I didn't want to go ahead with it. I'm happy it's all sorted.' More Trending
In a statement, Rivals production company Happy Prince said: 'On the 4th June, the police visited the set regarding an unrelated matter involving a supporting artist.
'Production co-operated with the police. We do not have any further information as it is not connected to Rivals or to our production.'
As well as the shows mentioned, Adams was also an extra in House of the Dragon and The Forsyte Saga.

Danny Dyer teases season two of saucy hit series Rivals and reveals how he's reinvented himself as the 'cheaper version of Gary Oldman' since leaving EastEnders

has teased season two of smash hit series Rivals and lifted the lid on his career reinvention since his EastEnders exit in 2022. The actor, 47, who plays Freddie Jones in the saucy Disney+ show, reassured fans that they have no need to worry about the new instalment failing to live up to its predecessor. He told Radio Times: 'I can't reveal much, but what I will say is that we've got no issues with the old second album syndrome. I've been blessed with a lovely character. He's not the lead and he doesn't need to be the lead, same as Katherine [Parkinson who plays love interest, Lizzie Vereker]'. Danny, who won a BAFTA earlier this year for Sky comedy Mr Bigstuff, also revealed there would be a 'bit more' of his character's love life in the new episodes. He also spoke about his other roles including the sole character in a new movie, which he said had first been offered to Oscar winner Sir Gary Oldman, 67. He told the publication: 'Fifteen pages of dialogue a day. Crazy. We shot it in Dublin. I just sat in the hotel room with the script. Went crazy by the end. I believe they went to Gary Oldman first. They told me he wanted £2 million just to read it'. 'But I was next in line, which I'm chuffed with. If you go Gary Oldman and I'm next, it's because I'm obviously cheaper. I'm happy to be a cheaper version of Gary Oldman.' MailOnline have contacted Gary Oldman's representatives for comment. Alongside the interview Danny looked dapper in a suit as he posed for a fun shoot in a pub with Mr Bigstuff co-star and creator Ryan Sampson. Danny starred as Mick Carter in the BBC soap for nine years, earning a whopping quarter of a million pounds a year at the height of his stint, before his explosive exit on Christmas Day 2022. Earlier this year he reflected on his decision to quit the BBC soap after he won his BAFTA and beat off stiff competition from Bilal Hasna, Dylan Thomas-Smith, Nabhaan Rizwan, Oliver Savell and Phil Dunning. Speaking in the press room after his win, Danny reflected on his varied career as he mused: You're only as good as the job in front of you really and it's getting the opportunities. 'It's also difficult to just get a job and so to get to this stage when you're getting awards and stuff, it is a journey.' Referencing his time on the BBC soap, he continued: 'I've been around a long time and EastEnders changed my career for so many different reasons but unless you roll the dice and you decide to see what else is out there, you never know... He teased: 'I can't reveal much, but what I will say is that we've got no issues with the old second album syndrome. 'It's working out really well for me at the moment. I'm having a lovely time but it can always go tits up. I know how this game works, I've had my ups and my downs but I'm just really grateful for it.' Danny hasn't had much positive to say about the soap, as he slammed the workload, declared he had been 'off his nut' on prescription drugs and had ended up in rehab twice because of the show. Calling out co-stars Jessie Wallace and Shane Richie, Danny brazenly branded them 'c***s' as he claimed they had blanked both him and his onscreen wife Kellie Bright. Recalling his arrival on the soap in 2013, the Rivals star said it was not a warm welcome, describing the set as 'a very cliquey place to work'. He claimed his taking over the Queen Vic caused Jessie and Shane, who played previous pub landlords Kat Slater and Alfie Moon, to 'have the hump'. According to The Sun, Danny boldly said: 'There were a lot of people blanking us when we first turned up and me and Kellie thought "You know what, f**k these c***s, let's get together and show them something different" - we had to prove ourselves over six months.' Danny also hit out at the soap opera's storylines, particularly Mick's 'mental' romance with Janine Butcher, insisting 'a lot of it is s**t'. As well as being unimpressed with his own character's fate, he raged over the decision to kill off Lola Pearce last year from a brain tumour, which he said 'wasted' actress Danielle Harold's talents. The Sun also claimed he slammed the BBC for not giving the cast sufficient duty of care, claiming they wouldn't allow actors time off to go to a family member's funeral - allegations which the BBC has denied. Danny - who was paid around £250,000 a year on the soap - said that while the salary was good, the stars had 'no life' and claimed the dark storylines 'messed lots of people's heads up', insisting they were 'lunatics'. 'You earn good money, but you ain't got time to go to a cashpoint, you have no life,' he said. 'There's not much duty of care, that's the truth, on EastEnders there is no messing about and you've got to do it, it's the hardest part of our job.' 'It messes a lot of people's heads up, most people are off their nut, you meet them on the street, they're lunatics I'm telling you - institutionalised,' he added. He also claimed that bosses put antiseptic into the beer barrels in the Queen Vic in order to prevent him from drinking from them. In response to Danny's comments, a spokesperson for EastEnders stated: 'We would never discuss an individual's private matters, however, we do not recognise these claims. 'EastEnders has extremely robust and well-established procedures in place to safeguard the welfare of everyone who works on the show.' Danny also spoke about EastEnders on the BAFTAs red carpet. He told Sky News: 'It's a roll of the dice leaving EastEnders it gives you sustainability but it is a risk and it has paid off for me. 'I don't know what is going on at the minute, I'm just rolling with it at the minute, it is a bit odd. I'm so proud of this Sky show and I'm happy to represent that show and I've got the Rivals lot here, I've just seen them. 'Two very different shows, I've been around a long time and I've done good and some bad stuff. I've had a good run this year, I'm getting nods now and I would love to nip this one but I've got to stay grounded and keep the ego grounded.'

Police officer, 32, is charged after unmarked cop car crashed into teenage pedestrian

A serving police officer has been charged with dangerous driving after his unmarked car ploughed into a teenage pedestrian. PC Dan Parsons, 32, based in South Gloucestershire, was driving the vehicle in Bristol as he responded to an emergency on Sunday, November 24. The unmarked police car collided with a 19-year-old woman at a roundabout, where the A4174 joins Badminton Road in Emersons Green. Following the crash, the teenager was taken to hospital with injuries and has since been discharged. Avon and Somerset Police have referred the collision to the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC), which deemed it suitable for a local investigation by the Professional Standards Department. An investigation was also carried out by the police's Serious Collision Investigations Team and the case was referred to the Crown Prosecution Service, resulting in the officer being charged. PC Parsons will appear at Bristol Magistrates' Court later today.

Major update as girl who fell overboard from Disney Cruise is saved by hero dad

The dad has been hailed as a 'hero' for rescuing his five-year-old daughter when she fell overboard on a Disney Dream cruise - police have now explained how she ended up in the water Police have released remarkable new details about the hero dad who rescued his five-year-old daughter after she fell overboard on a Disney cruise. The nail-biting incident unfolded on June 29 aboard the Disney Dream cruise as it returned to Fort Lauderdale, Florida, following a four-day voyage around the Bahamas. Passengers on the ship described how the father leapt into the sea to go after his daughter when she fell from the railings into the sea below, before swimming over to her to keep her afloat until help arrived. The pair were brought back onto the ship by a rescue boat about 10 minutes later. Now, police have released a more detailed account of how the miraculous rescue played out - and corrected some harmful online speculation, which erroneously claimed the dad had placed the girl on the railings himself for a photograph. ‌ ‌ According to the new statement from the Broward Sheriff's Office, the five-year-old girl "lost her balance while sitting on a railing" and fell backwards through a porthole. Her father didn't see the fall - but quickly jumped into the water to her rescue after her mother told him what had happened. The statement reads: "The incident occurred at approximately 11:30 a.m. Sunday, June 29, on deck 4 of a Disney cruise ship, while the ship was in international waters somewhere between the Bahamas and Port Everglades. ‌ "Broward Sheriff's Office detectives continue to investigate the moments before a 5-year-old girl lost her balance while sitting on a railing and falling backward through a porthole. After the girl's mother alerted her husband, who didn't see the incident, he jumped into the ocean to save his daughter. "BSO detectives said after the 37-year-old father found his daughter, he treaded water until they were rescued by a tender that was launched from the ship. "The crew's 'man overboard' training and readiness paid off because they executed a successful ocean rescue. BSO investigators said the total time from the child's accidental fall to the rescue was about 20 minutes. Once rescued, the father and daughter were checked out by the ship's medical staff. ‌ "And after the ship arrived Monday morning at Port Everglades, Broward Sheriff Fire Rescue transported them to an area hospital. The father was hospitalised. The family lives out of state. For the family's continued privacy, detectives are not releasing their names, where they live, or the details of the father's injury. Police said an investigation into the incident continues, adding: "This family is so blessed. It's great to be able to respond to good news rather than what could have been a tragic outcome." The Disney Dream - a cruise ship with 14 decks and a capacity of 4,000 passengers - continued on to Florida as scheduled. Falls from cruise ships are often fatal. One industry report in 2019 found that only nine of 25 people who fell overboard that year survived.
