Negri coach warns players to stay grounded despite Police rout

KUALA LUMPUR: Negri Sembilan coach Nidzam Jamil has urged his players to remain grounded despite a strong start to the season that saw them thrash Police 5-0 in the first leg of the FA Cup first round on Monday.
The win puts the Deer in a strong position for a quarter-final spot.
Jovan Motika (second, 40th minutes) and Joseph Esso (43rd, 79th) each scored a brace while Mio Tsuneyasu (75th) complete the rout.
Earlier, Negri had started their Super League campaign with a 5-3 defeat to heavyweights Johor Darul Ta'zim (JDT).
Nidzam stressed that the team are still a work in progress and reminded his players that they have yet to finish the job against Police. The return leg is scheduled for Sept 12.
"We still have one more game to play in the FA Cup," the former international said at a post-match press conference.
"We have not qualified for the next round (quarter-finals) although we got a good result.
"After the first goal, we were quiet for 20 minutes, but we fixed a few things and then it was okay.
"The most important thing is that Motika is playing for the team and we are happy he's scoring, along with Esso. But it's still early in the season and our journey is a long one.
"There are still plenty of things to improve. This is a long process as we've only been together for eight weeks, nine including pre-season.
"At senior level, time is limited but we are working to make the team better. We need to produce good performances and results to convince the supporters, and I hope they will be patient with the process."
Negri will now turn their attention to a Super League match against Selangor in Paroi on Sunday.
Nidzam said the team will be without Ghanaian midfielder Alex Agyarkwa, who is on loan from the Red Giants.
"I'm not sure if we can say we are in good form yet," Nidzam said.
"We will miss Alex against Selangor. We gave An Sang Su 30 minutes against Police to help him build momentum.

No more late slips in Asean Club C'ship, Selangor vow

PETALING JAYA: Selangor are determined not to let victory slip away again in the Asean Club Championships Shopee Cup after a frustrating 1-1 draw with Thai giants Buriram United. The Red Giants had started on the right note at the Chang Stadium in Buriram on Wednesday, with Brazilian striker Chrigor Moraes giving them the lead in the 36th minute. But defending champions Buriram fought back, and Austrian defender Peter Zulji snatched a late equaliser deep into stoppage time. Despite taking just one point from their opening match, Selangor head coach Katsuhito Kinoshi praised his team for having kept Buriram on the chase throughout the match. 'I was really satisfied with how we played in the first half but we have to train hard for our next matches.' said Kinoshi. 'We had good training sessions before playing Buriram, but they were very organised and had many good players. 'We did hold the lead until the 95th minute, so that was something that we should be proud of.' Kinoshi acknowledged the would have to raise the bar when they face Buriram again at home. 'We must be stronger, more team-oriented and disciplined in our coming matches, regardless of whether it's the domestic league or international competition,' he said. He also confirmed that Thai midfielder Picha Autra, left out for tactical reasons, remains an integral part of the squad. 'He is our player and I need him in the team. This is for sure,' said Kinoshi. Selangor's next match will see them visit Negri Sembilan in the Super League on Sunday, before they host Terengganu at home on Wednesday.

JDT come out tops in battle of Causeway champions

KUALA LUMPUR: Johor Darul Ta'zim (JDT) wasted little time announcing themselves on the Asean Club Championship (ACC) stage, storming to a 3-1 win over Lion City Sailors (LCS) in their Group B opener at the Sultan Ibrahim Stadium today. The much-anticipated "Causeway Champions Clash" pitted Malaysia's Super League winners against Singapore's S-League title holders, and it was the home side who seized the early advantage. The game's first flashpoint came in the eighth minute when former Selangor stalwart Safuwan Baharudin was booked for a rash foul inside the area. After a VAR review, the referee awarded JDT a penalty, which Joao Figueiredo calmly tucked away with a precise right-footed strike into the bottom corner. The Brazilian forward doubled the Southern Tigers' lead just five minutes later, showing his predatory instincts with another composed finish from the centre of the box in the 16th minute. When fans at Iskandar Puteri were making their exit, Arif Aiman Hanapi roared the stadium back to life with a third goal in stoppage time (90+2). But the Singapore club managed to pull one back to reduce the deficit just before the final whistle (90+4) through a fantastic shot outside the box by Shawal Anuar. Next, JDT will host Thai League 1 runners-up Bangkok United at the same venue on Sept 25.
