Writers, intellectuals condemn Kamal Haasan's Kannada remark
During the protest spearheaded by Karnatak Vidyavardhakh Sangha, the protestors staged a sit-in in front of the office of the Deputy Commissioner in Dharwad and condemned in strong words the remark and the subsequent statement of the actor.
The protest was in pursuance of the decisions taken during the recent consultative meeting of the sangha after the actor refused to apologise for his remark.
Addressing the protestors, president of the sangha Chandrakanth Bellad, general secretary Shankar Halagatti and others, including writers and intellectuals, strongly condemned the adamant behaviour of the actor, despite the strong criticism and a series of protest across the State against him on the issue.
They said that the veteran actor is behaving in an irresponsible manner even after a court gave him an option to apologise for his remark.
The speakers clarified that the sangha has no opposition either to Tamil language or Tamil-speaking people as it is a known fact that languages originating from Proto-Dravidian language evolved into different languages.
They also further clarified that their protest is not against Tamil language or Tamils but against an irresponsible statement by Kamal Haasan and his subsequent conduct.
The protestors demanded that he withdraw his baseless statement on Kannada language, express regret and apologise to Kannadigas. If he failed to do so, the sangha will be compelled to launch an intense State-wide agitation, they said.

Agitating conservancy workers evicted from protest site, Oppn lashes out at ruling DMK
Chennai, Police evicted agitating conservancy workers on Wednesday midnight from the protest site following a Madras High Court ruling against blocking public pathways and the Opposition parties strongly condemned the police and the ruling DMK for the late night action against the protesters. Agitating conservancy workers evicted from protest site, Oppn lashes out at ruling DMK Opposing privatisation, the workers were protesting in front of Rippon Buildings, the headquarters of Chennai Corporation since August 1. Chief Minister MK Stalin said his Dravidian model government would never compromise on the dignity of conservancy workers who work hard whether it rains or shines, and announced special initiatives for them. After the Cabinet meeting led by Stalin here at the Secretariat, Finance Minister Thangam Thenarasu told reporters that a special health scheme will be implemented for conservancy workers in view of occupational hazards they face. In order to detect occupational diseases and treat workers, a separate health scheme will be implemented. As many as 30,000 houses under a housing scheme, financial support for children of workers to pursue higher education, free breakfast for workers, ₹10 lakh to the kin of a worker if he/she dies in harness forms part of the six special initiatives. Thennarasu appealed to workers to resume their work. The police action earlier came hours after the Madras High Court, said: "We hope and expect that in the name of agitation, the pavements/pathways roads shall not be allowed to be blocked." The workers have been opposing the privatisation of sanitation operations . AIADMK chief and Tamil Nadu Leader of Opposition, Edappadi K Palaniswami strongly condemned the midnight police action against the workers. When Stalin was in opposition he staged 'dramas' urging permanent jobs for them. "No government in independent India has crushed the protest of ordinary sanitation workers like this. The government will have to provide answer for every drop of tears of workers," he said in a social media post. TVK founder-actor Vijay hit out at the DMK government as 'fascist' for the police action against workers and he dubbed IT as inhuman and atrocious as workers, who protested peacefully for their rights, were detained midnight. The workers are protesting seeking fulfillment of assurances made by the DMK when it was in opposition. Why the assurance has not been honoured yet, Vijay asked. The workers should be provided alternative site to continue their protest. This article was generated from an automated news agency feed without modifications to text.

"Popularity Not A Shield": Supreme Court's Top Quotes On Actor Darshan
New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Thursday cancelled the bail of Kannada actor Darshan Thogudeepa in the Renukaswamy murder case. He was arrested soon after the order came. The state had objected to the interim bail granted to the actor accused of murder. Here are the top quotes of the Supreme Court Popularity cannot be a shield for impunity. As this court held, influence, resources and social status cannot form a basis for granting bail where there is a genuine risk of prejudice to the investigation or trial. In the present case, by treating Darshan's stature as a mitigating factor, the high court committed a manifest perversity in the exercise of its discretion, thereby warranting cancellation of bail. As demonstrated earlier, Darshan is not a common undertrial. He enjoys celebrity status, mass following, political clout, and financial muscle. His conduct inside the jail including recorded instances of VIP treatment, violations of jail rules, and registered FIRs [first information reports] for misuse of facilities reflect his capacity to defy the system even while in custody. If a person can subvert the prison system, the risk of interference with evidence, threatening influencing witnesses, and tampering with the course of justice is both real and imminent. Moreover, Darshan's immediate return to social events, sharing a stage with prosecution witnesses, and continued influence over police witnesses, despite being on bail, establish that his liberty is a threat to the integrity of the proceedings. Notably, celebrities serve as social role models, so accountability is greater, not lesser. They, by virtue of their fame and public presence, wield substantial influence on public behaviour and social values. Granting leniency to such persons despite grave charges of conspiracy and murder sends a wrong message to society and undermines public confidence in the justice system. Accordingly, Darshan's antecedents, influence, jail misconduct, and the seriousness of the charges against him make him unfit for bail, and the granting bail to him is based on non-application of mind, perverse, and legally unsustainable. In a democracy governed by the rule of law, no individual is exempt from legal accountability by virtue of status or social capital. Article 14 [of the Constitution] guarantees equality before the law... All persons, regardless of popularity, power, or privilege, are equally subject to the law.
