Writers, intellectuals condemn Kamal Haasan's Kannada remark

The Hindu16 hours ago

Scores of writers, artists, linguists, intellectuals and Kannada activists staged a day-long protest in Dharwad on Monday in protest against the recent remark made by veteran multi-lingual actor Kamal Haasan on the origin of Kannada language.
During the protest spearheaded by Karnatak Vidyavardhakh Sangha, the protestors staged a sit-in in front of the office of the Deputy Commissioner in Dharwad and condemned in strong words the remark and the subsequent statement of the actor.
The protest was in pursuance of the decisions taken during the recent consultative meeting of the sangha after the actor refused to apologise for his remark.
Addressing the protestors, president of the sangha Chandrakanth Bellad, general secretary Shankar Halagatti and others, including writers and intellectuals, strongly condemned the adamant behaviour of the actor, despite the strong criticism and a series of protest across the State against him on the issue.
They said that the veteran actor is behaving in an irresponsible manner even after a court gave him an option to apologise for his remark.
The speakers clarified that the sangha has no opposition either to Tamil language or Tamil-speaking people as it is a known fact that languages originating from Proto-Dravidian language evolved into different languages.
They also further clarified that their protest is not against Tamil language or Tamils but against an irresponsible statement by Kamal Haasan and his subsequent conduct.
The protestors demanded that he withdraw his baseless statement on Kannada language, express regret and apologise to Kannadigas. If he failed to do so, the sangha will be compelled to launch an intense State-wide agitation, they said.

Shah's speech on Tamil Nadu ‘blatant lies': A Raja

Amit Shah is trying to disturb the peace in a harmonious state like Tamil Nadu, said DMK's A Raja on Monday while emphasising that the Union home minister's speech attacking them a day ago were'blatant lies'. 'His speech was three things — disgusting, blatant lies without evidence and divisive,' Raja said in a press conference. Shah in Madurai on Sunday launched a scathing attack on the MK Stalin-led DMK government for 'rising corruption, crimes against women and drug mafia' over the last four years and said that the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) would form the government in Tamil Nadu in the 2026 assembly elections. 'Their communal politics does not work here. People of Tamil Nadu have repeatedly shown the BJP that their politics will not be accepted here,' Raja said. He added that they are not afraid of Shah and Prime Minister Narendra Modi. ' We are not afraid of Shah and Modi. Afterall, they are ordinary people. Why are they not able to win here? Because we have an ideology that is an alternative to theirs. As long as Dravidian ideology exists, they cannot gain a foothold here. We are not Delhi, Maharashtra and Haryana. We are Tamil Nadu, we are Dravidam, they (BJP) cannot come here.' Raja rebutted Shah's speech point by point and listed chief minister MK Stalin's achievement while adding that the BJP-led Union government is creating confusion over the delimitation process. On Shah urging people to participate in large numbers on June 22 for BJP's conference on Lord Murugan in Madurai, Raja said that the people know that it is to whip up communal sentiments. 'You are not conducting this for the unity of Hindus but to bring in religious divide by going against Islam, Christianity and marginalised people,' the Lok Sabha MP said. Naam Tamilar Katchi (NTK) chief S Seeman too said that the BJP should not politicise Tamil deity Lord Murugan. 'There is a value for Murugan in the state. Why didn't BJP speak of his glory all these days,' Seeman told reporters. 'You take up Rama in Uttar Pradesh, Puri Jagannath in Odisha, Aiyyappa in Kerala, and then Murugan here. Do you think people here will be deceived?' In response, the BJP said Shah ensured that the BJP forms the government in Haryana, Maharashtra and Delhi. 'He has come to Tamil Nadu to pack off the DMK in the 2026 assembly elections,' BJP's Tamil Nadu chief Nainar Nagendran said.

Amit Shah's visits will boost DMK alliance in 2026, says A Raja

CHENNAI: DMK deputy general secretary A Raja on Monday said Union Home Minister Amit Shah's frequent visits to the state would boost DMK alliance's seat count in the upcoming Assembly elections, just as Prime Minister Narendra Modi's visits led to their landslide victory in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections. Speaking to the media at Anna Arivalayam, Raja, The Nilgiris MP, said, 'Without regard for the responsibilities that come with the post of union home minister, Shah's speech in Madurai indulged in slander, he made baseless allegations, attempted to incite communal tensions in the state, all for political gain.' Raja said, 'At its core, Shah's speech can be described as a blatant lie, a disgusting deception, and cunningly divisive.' He said while the BJP may find success in states like Haryana, Maharashtra, and Delhi, it cannot win in Tamil Nadu, as the state is grounded in a strong ideological foundation. 'As long as Dravidian ideology is there, they cannot gain foothold in Tamil Nadu. We are not Delhi, Maharashtra and Haryana. We are Tamil Nadu, we are Dravidam, (BJP) cannot come here,' he said.

TN remains an enigma for the saffron lobby

As NDA 3.0 completes its first anniversary today, the perennially in election mode apparatus of the alliance must already be working overtime for the slate for the later part of the year. Bihar, one of the states readying for the Assembly elections, is slowly but surely seeing changes, ostensibly in favour of an overwhelming saffron win at present. Whatever that may be, the 2026 elections must be making the war rooms of various political parties working with a different game plan as it is where the INDIA bloc sees its chances. Tamil Nadu, by this time, next year would have had a new government in place. The question is, which party will get to run the state which is now seeing aggressive posturing by NDA and counter attacks by the DMK government. Once a formal alliance was sealed by the Centre with the principal Opposition party and old ally, the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK), the BJP must have felt relieved that it has made the first move, well. Given that the MGR-founded party is facing an identity and existential crisis in its 53rd year of existence, the cobbling together of the alliance with smaller parties being wooed establishes the fact that the saffron party is happy to ride piggyback on the Dravidian big brother this time around. Amit Shah's latest statement that the new alliance will sweep the 2026 polls has not entirely been rejected by the political pundits and as expected, pooh poohed by the DMK leaders. Its top-rung icons say that if the Dravidian ideology resonates with the people, it is nigh impossible for the BJP to set its foot in Tamil Nadu. While a few still consider the earlier elections and the 2024 Lok Sabha polls as a 'lost opportunity' for the BJP to have made inroads into the Tamil psyche, the highly unpopular way the administration has gone about its business has made the average public take a critical look at the goings-on in the State. Dynastic politics – that of Udayanidhi being groomed to take over from the present CM, M K Stalin - is still being helplessly accepted by the party machinery and followers as a 'natural' progression of the first family in retaining power. What is not left unnoticed is the increased presence of Karunanidhi's daughter and the CM's step-sister Kanimozhi in the central scheme of things, Stalin's blow hot blow cold with Modi government and the stench of corruption in the governance of the State which has been allowed to grow (the TASMAC case, for one), for a surgical strike later by the central machinery, closer to the poll dates. It is surely a work in progress for the non-DMK formation, but it is a known fact that the DMK has till date never managed a second successive stint in office. Will they break the jinx this time or will a currently docile anti-DMK alliance spring a surprise? If it is the final chance for the AIADMK to retain its political relevance, it is also the best-ever opportunity for the BJP in nearly five decades to make its presence felt in the state's corridors of power. Whether they can make or mar will be in the hands of the Tamil electorate.
