Citroen urged to fix 'chaotic' recall and pay compensation to affected drivers
Citroen has been told to improve its "chaotic" and "shameful" recall over a potentially fatal airbag safety fault. Consumer champion Which? wants the government to intervene if Stellantis, the car brand's parent company, does not improve the process for fixing the fault and offering customers compensation. A "stop-drive" recall was issued in June for all Citroen C3 second-generation and DS 3 first-generation vehicles made between 2009 and 2019 due to the risk of the airbag rupturing in a collision, which can cause injury or death. All affected vehicles are expected to be fixed by the end of next month. Customers were told to "immediately cease using their vehicle", but Which? has raised concerns over how this message has been shared. It says it has spoken to several distressed drivers, including the mother of a premature baby who needs hospital treatment and a woman caring for her terminally ill husband, who have been left without transport for weeks or months and forced to hire cars and taxis. A few owners who told Which? they were being offered compensation said they were getting a maximum of £22.50 a day - far less than the cost of car hire in most regions. Sue Davies, head of consumer protection policy at Which?, said: "From people left stranded with no means of transport, to those paying out a fortune to hire cars and taxis, the emotional and financial burden of this recall has fallen squarely on those least able to absorb it. "Stellantis must urgently confirm it will pay compensation for alternative transport as well as offer practical solutions, such as offering at-home repairs or towing affected cars to garages. If not, many people will see no alternative but to continue driving cars that are potentially very dangerous. "The government needs to step in and hold them to account to ensure UK consumers have much greater clarity of what they need to do and what they are entitled to - and are never left in this position again." The Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency, the government body that oversees car safety recalls, told Money it was in contact with Citroen on how it is managing the recall. "We have received reassurances the company is working hard to arrange repairs and minimise disruption for vehicle owners. However, we know there is more that can be done and we continue to reinforce their responsibilities under the code of practice," it said. "We urge all owners of affected vehicles to follow Citroen's advice. To check if your vehicle is affected, car owners can use the checker on Citroen's website." The Department for Transport told Money that Heidi Alexander, the transport secretary, and Lilian Greenwood, future of roads minister, were "actively engaging with manufacturers and industry leaders to ensure any disruption is kept to an absolute minimum". It added: "We understand how frustrating these recalls are for those affected. The safety of those drivers and their families remains the transport secretary's top priority." Stellantis said: "The company's focus remains on completing the replacement of airbags in affected vehicles as swiftly as possible. "Our Citroen network is fully engaged in maximising the number of cars that can be completed every day and, to increase our repair capacity even further and minimise as much as possible the impact on customers, our Peugeot network is now authorised to replace airbags on these cars in addition to at-home options. "For each and every customer, we discuss options to support mobility, recognising that every driver has specific requirements. These options include replacement airbags at a dealership or at home, courtesy car, support for other mobility options and recovery. We give priority to those with the most urgent needs." Volkswagen to axe another long-running combustion car from its range as it puts its foot down on EV transition
German car giant Volkswagen will axe another evergreen combustion engine model from its range next year as it continues to accelerate towards its all-electric future. The brand is reportedly planning to announce that it will wield the axe on a vehicle it has been selling for the best part of 25 years - and had once proved immensely popular with large families. Insiders at the Wolfsburg manufacturer have told Autocar that production of the Touareg SUV will end in 2026. Having first launched in 2002, VW has shifted more than 1.1 million worldwide across three generations. Since the Phaeton luxury saloon was terminated in 2016, Touareg has been VW's most prestigious nameplate and the pinnacle of its petrol and diesel-engined line-up. However, sales have tumbled to around 1,100 units per annum in recent years as rivals from Audi, BMW, Mercedes and Porsche have dominated the large executive SUV market. When its departure is confirmed for 2026, the new Tayron will become VW's largest SUV model in the UK. It will also be the biggest combustion engine car it sells. Touareg was originally developed at the turn of the century alongside the Porsche Cayenne - the German sports car company's (which is also owned by VW Group) first foray into the SUV segment, with the pair launching in 2002. They have since continued to share platforms, though Cayenne has gone on to be a higher volume seller thanks to its badge appeal. The move to kill it off next year - once confirmed - will mean that Volkswagen will no longer occupies the most executive SUV class, which in recent times has welcomed major players of the likes of Bentley (Bentayga), Ferrari (Purosangue), Lamborghini (Urus) and Maserati (Levante). With more competition - and premium German rivals extending their offerings in this market - the Touareg has become a very unpopular option. With no direct successor planned, its demise will close the book on a 24-year availability of what bosses once dubbed the brand's 'true flagship model'. According to a Volkswagen statement given in 2023 - when the Touareg was last facelifted - more than 1.13 million have been sold worldwide. Some 58,200 of these have been delivered to customers in the UK. Since the first-generation car's arrival, it has survived on a shared platform with the Porsche Cayenne and Audi Q7 While it might have become less popular in recent years, it has proved itself durable... with some extreme evidence to hand showing just how well built the Touareg truly is. In December 2023, a Russian driver had a miraculous escape after his Touareg plunged 40ft from a multi-storey car park. He was driving the SUV when it smashed through a flimsy barrier and fell to the road below. Incredibly, Evgeny Shamko, 40 (at the time of the event), suffered no injuries from the almighty fall, according to reports. The report come months after Volkswagen pulled the Arteon Shooting Brake estate from its combustion-engine line-up - having dropped the conventional Arteon saloon back in 2023. And while it debuted a new Passat last year, it will be sold in the UK exclusively as an estate, with the four-door version scrapped from showrooms, leaving the electric ID.7 as the company's standalone saloon car. While Touareg's exit stage left is part of VW's range transition to EVs, even some of its battery cars are being culled. As well as reports of the Touareg bowing out, the ID.5 electric SUV is also expected to retire in a matter of months. Having only launched in 2021, the sportier - coupe-inspired - variant of the ID.4 is being hung out to dry in 2027, having registered disappointing sales. It was primarily targeted at the Chinese market, however a boom in new domestic brands at a lower price point saw demand flop. Since the Phaeton luxury saloon was terminated in 2016, Touareg has been VW's most prestigious nameplate and the pinnacle of its petrol and diesel-engined line-up. But it too soon will be no longer available in Volkswagen showrooms Sales in Europe have been lacklustre too - and VW didn't even bother offering it to US customers. Volkswagen's EV priorities are now expected to shift towards smaller models, with a Polo-size ID.2 expected next year, and a smaller ID.1 a real possibility for 12 months later. VW has also recently confirmed its iconic hot hatch badge will live on in an EV world. CEO Thomas Schafer in May revealing the GTI performance range remains part of the German giant's plans.

STOCKHOLM, Aug 8 (Reuters) - Many of Northvolt's creditors will lose a lot of money in the Swedish battery maker's bankruptcy, the process trustee said on Friday, adding the sale of the business to U.S. battery startup Lyten is a significant achievement. Northvolt's unsecured creditors include its largest shareholders Goldman Sachs and Volkswagen ( opens new tab, whose brands Scania, Porsche and Audi were customers of the battery maker. Backed by Jeep-owner Stellantis ( opens new tab and delivery service FedEx (FDX.N), opens new tab, Lyten on Thursday said it would buy most of Northvolt, offering a way back for the European company that was once seen as the region's answer to rivals in Asia. Northvolt filed for bankruptcy last November with more than $8 billion in debt. The trustee did not indicate exactly how much creditors could lose under the process. Bankruptcy trustee Mikael Kubu said the acquisition would be closed for Swedish assets by the end of October with the deal taking "a bit more time" to close abroad.
