Georgia AG announces Brookhaven woman convicted in $305K Medicaid fraud scheme
According to Georgia Attorney General Chris Carr's office, Teresa Renee Owens owned RJ Shepherd II, Inc, which was doing business as Better Home Healthcare of Georgia.
The company provided behavioral health therapy services to children and adults and was enrolled in Medicaid.
'While operating this business, Owens directed the submission of false claims to the Georgia Medicaid program on a repetitive basis' and had her staff create patient records with fake information in them to support the fraudulent claims, the AG's office said.

'The funds derived from this scheme, $305,685.75″ were then put into personal bank accounts owned by Owens.
On March 31, Owens pled guilty in DeKalb County Superior Court to one count of Medicaid fraud, one count of false writings and one count of identity fraud.
She was sentenced to 10 years, with one year served in prison and the other nine on probation, according to Carr's office.
Additionally, Owens had a restitution hearing on April 28, where a judge ordered her to pay $305,685.75 back to the Georgia Medicaid program.
'Medicaid Fraud isn't a victimless crime – it's theft of taxpayer dollars and it undermines a system meant to care for our most vulnerable Georgians,' Carr said in a statement. 'As this case shows, we will not hesitate to hold accountable those who use their positions to exploit our Medicaid program. Rest assured, if you're a provider attempting to game the system, you will be identified, prosecuted, and ordered to pay back every dollar you stole.'

Grandville orthodontist facing federal child exploitation charges
GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) — An orthodontist who formerly practiced in Grandville is now facing federal child exploitation charges. Thomas Shannon, 43, was arrested in Frankfort, Michigan, the U.S. Attorney's Office for the Western District of Michigan announced Wednesday. He is charged by criminal complaint with sexual exploitation of a minor, attempted sexual exploitation of a minor, possession of child pornography, receipt of child pornography and attempted receipt of child pornography, according to the attorney's office. According to a criminal complaint filed in federal court Monday, a therapist reported in 2021 that a teenager had been sexually exploited. The victim told police that she had received money in exchange for sending illicit images, the complaint continues, and investigators traced the Snapchat and CashApp accounts to Shannon, who lived in Byron Township. Sex offender, busted in sting but not arrested, snagged again In 2022, amid a Kent County investigation, the complaint says Shannon hired a private forensic investigator to search his phone 'in an attempt to prove that he did not possess any child pornography.' 'The examiner, however, found child pornography and turned it over to police,' the U.S. Attorney's Office wrote in a release. Authorities found evidence that Shannon possessed and received child pornography, according to the complaint. Investigators found that Shannon had communicated with multiple minor victims whom he met online, the complaint alleges. One was just 12 years old. The complaint placed most of the victims out of state. Shannon was in January 2023. But according to the federal complaint, he was released on bond. Investigators found that he was on bond for those charges while communicating with one victim — a 13-year-old — in 2024, the complaint alleges. The state case against Shannon is pending. MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Hernandez Govan, the man accused of orchestrating the death of rapper Young Dolph, is set to appear in court for day three of his trial Wednesday morning. On Tuesday, Angela Arnold, the girlfriend of Cornelius Smith, was the first witness to take the stand. She told the court that to her knowledge, Smith never had direct contact with Big Jook and that he would communicate with Govan to send and receive messages. She also testified she saw Govan at a carwash hours after Young Dolph's death, when Smith picked up a cellphone from Govan he had left in the white Mercedes used in the murder. Various Memphis Police Investigators were then called to testify in court, along with cell phone records. According to the investigators, they went over calls and text records of Goavn, Smith, and Big Jook in the months leading up to the murder and afterward. They say Smith appeared to have several outgoing calls to Govan. But in cross-examination, Govan's defense attorney explained the reasoning for their communication, saying, Govan supplied Smith with various types of pills, and Johnson talked with him because he was an aspiring rapper. Another investigator who testified said detectives went to the airport to execute a search warrant on Big Jook's phone and asked if they could speak to him, but he refused. 13-year-old girl missing in Jasper County since Monday
JASPER COUNTY, S.C. (WSAV) — A 13-year-old girl has been missing in Jasper County since Monday morning, where she was last seen on her way to the bus stop, the Jasper County Sheriff's Office said. Maria del Pilar Estudillo Gordillo, who goes by Pili, is five-foot-tall and weighs approximately 115 pounds. She does not speak English. Pili was last seen near Rudy Drive in Hardeeville, South Carolina, wearing a forest green school shirt and black pants.
