Breast cancer survivors honored at annual Pink Zone Game
STATE COLLEGE, Pa. (WTAJ) — Hundreds of breast cancer survivors were honored on Sunday in State College at the 19th annual Pink Zone Game.
Before the game started, there was a celebration for all survivors in the South Gym of the Bryce Jordan Center.
'When you get a cancer diagnosis, you don't really know what's going to happen and what to expect and this is an opportunity to just say, we're celebrating you,' Pink Zone's President, Tammy Miller, said.
For breast cancer survivors, each day is another chance to celebrate the end of a journey.
'Having that experience really walked me, people walking me through it. I wasn't scared at all because they were with me. And I want to give back. I'm here today to make sure that to let everybody know that I'm here for them as well,' Maria Kim, a breast cancer survivor, said.
Maria finished her cancer treatment exactly 6 months and 1 day ago. She said it felt amazing, yet surreal to finish it. It didn't fully sink in until she got her completion certificate.

The history of the Pink Zone Game dates back to February 2007. Trish Fulvio is the Executive Director and spoke more about the history.
'It all started with a small grant from the NCAA. Their challenge was to raise money for breast cancer causes. And they gave Penn State that grant. That's how the pink game started. Then all the other schools that are doing it took the lead from Penn State. Once again, we're first,' Fulvio said.
Over the years, Pink Zone has raised more than $3.2 million for partner organizations, including the Kay Yow Cancer Fund as well as contributions for direct aid to local breast cancer patients and their families.
More than 5,000 survivors have been honored, including Kim Ramirez, who started attending the event five years ago and chose to volunteer this year. She also founded her own non-profit organization to help other survivors.
'After you ring the bell, you're no longer eligible for any of the other resources with all the other great organizations. So what we do now is we help the survivor. After you ring the bell, we'll help you with your medically related co-pays and deductibles, because you got to keep doing scans. And there, you know, there's still so much after the fact,' Ramirez said.
Next year will be the 20th anniversary of the Pink Zone game, and Corinne Leparik has volunteered since the very beginning. She was never diagnosed with breast cancer, but she was a Lady Lion during her time at Penn State.
'I think everybody who comes back year after year, that's what gives me pleasure when I see some of the same gals come through, meaning that they're still successful with surviving breast cancer. And it's just awesome that it's the same excitement every year,' Leparik said.
The Pink Zone Game started at 1 p.m. The Lady Lions squared off against the Badgers, as they did in the first-ever Pink Zone game in 2007.

Cornerback Khary Adams Another top prospect, Adams isn't getting the hype prior to the visit that he deserves. As the nation's No. 75 overall prospect, he's clearly one of the best nationally. The 6-foot, 2-inch and 175-pound corner has yet to make a commitment date, but it does look like Oregon, Michigan, South Carolina, Penn State and Notre Dame are the main players. Wide receiver Kaydon Finley One of the Irish's top remaining wide receiver targets, Finley is closing on a July 4th decision. As the country's No. 110 overall player, he would add to a solid group currently committed to Notre Dame. Adams at 6-foot and 200-pounds, is also considering Texas, Texas A&M, and Arizona State. Running back commit Jonaz Walton The first of many current commitments on this list, Walton joined Notre Dame's class last month. At 5-foot, 10-inches and 205-pounds, he's got great size at the running back position. Walton is ranked as the No. 125 overall player in the class. Offensive line commit Gregory Patrick Patrick joined the Irish class in mid-April, giving them yet another recruiting win in the state of Michigan. At 6-foot, 5-inches and 275-pounds, he's got the size and frame to be a great right tackle and also play on the left side if needed. Patrick is ranked as the No. 179 overall player. Linebacker commitment Thomas Davis Jr. While his father's alma mater Georgia is pressing for a flip, Davis looks like he's locked in to play for Notre Dame. That's great news as he's the No. 193 prospect and has NFL bloodlines. This visit will go a long way in sealing the deal with the talented linebacker. Offensive tackle Grayson McKeogh At 6-foot, 7-inches and 275-pounds, McKeogh has the look of an elite left tackle. He's not quite ranked as one as the No. 262 overall prospect, but that doesn't matter to Notre Dame. McKeogh is also considering Texas and Penn State, who will get official visits after this weekends trip to South Bend. Defensive line commit Tiki Hola Hola committed just over a month ago to Notre Dame, and he's making his return this weekend. The 6-foot, 2-inch and 285-pound lineman looks like he's going to start his career on the inside. Hola is ranked as the No. 328 overall prospect in the 2026 class. Running back DeZephen Walker Another visitor who doesn't have much hype surrounding him, but should is Walker. Notre Dame is battling Nebraska, Kansas State and Kansas for his commitment, but he's already visited the Wildcats and Jayhawks. The nation's No. 370 players will visit the Cornhuskers next weekend, and could be nearing a decision. Wide receiver Devin Fitzgerald The relationship between his father, Pittsburgh and Arizona Cardinal legend Larry, is one of the edges that Notre Dame has in Devin's recruitment. He's the bigger receiver that this class is missing at 6-foot, 2-inches and 195-pounds. The younger Fitzgerald is also considering Stanford, Clemson, UCLA, Arizona State and North Carolina, with a July 5th commitment date. Tight end Preston Fryzel Fryzel's recruitment is trending Notre Dame's way, he was recently predicted to land in South Bend. He'll do that this weekend, as the Ohio native won't travel far to see the Irish. He's the nation's No. 882 prospect, and is also looking at Iowa, Minnesota and Duke as other options. Quarterback commit Noah Grubbs This one is cheating a bit as Grubbs started his official on Thursday, but it's important regardless. There isn't any doubt that he is wavering, it's more that he's in town to try and help recruit along with getting to know his future teammate better. Where Drew Allar ranks among Big Ten QBs in 2025 Josh Pate ranks Drew Allar and Big Ten QBs for 2025 The expectations are high for Penn State football in 2025, and the return of starting quarterback Drew Allar is one of the key reasons why. Allar's decision to return to the Nittany Lions for another season was Noted college football podcaster Josh Pate shared his thoughts on the state of quarterbacks in the Big Ten for the upcoming season, and Allar took the top spot on the top-10 list. Allar edged out Ohio State's Julian Sayin and Oregon's Dante Moore, each in position to take over starting jobs with their respective schools this season for the first time. In fact, on the list of the top-10 quarterbacks in the conference from Pate, Allar is the most seasoned and experienced in the bunch, and one of the rare players entering a third season as the starter with his current school. Allar is third in Penn State history with 53 career touchdown passes, putting him 24 behind McSorley's 77 career touchdown passes for second on the list. Clifford holds the school record with 86 career touchdown passes. Allar has been topping various quarterback rankings this offseason. ESPN's Greg McElroy ranked Allar as his third-best quarterback in the nation in his previously released rankings for the 2025 season.
