Owaisi seeks effective response to Pahalgam terror attack, demands probe

AIMIM chief Asaduddin Owaisi on Tuesday said India should give an effective response to last month's Pahalgam attack and termed the incident as barbaric and cowardly.
Speaking to reporters here, the Lok Sabha MP sought an inquiry into the death of a man from Kulgam who was allegedly picked up by security forces for questioning in the aftermath of the Pahalgam attack.
"It was a terror attack, a cowardly attack. The more we condemn it, the less it is. We have seen how terrorists from Pakistan killed 26 people," Owaisi told reporters.
The way people were killed by separating kids and women, and asking males about their religion, was disheartening and inhumane. "Those who couldn't recite the Kalma were fired upon. This is barbaric," he said.
Owaisi said the local residents of Kashmir are bearing the brunt of the attack as the tourism sector has taken a hit.
"The tourists have gone from here in huge numbers. We want our government to give an effective response to it. We have said the same in the all-party meeting as well," he added.
To a question about the death of 22-year-old Imtiyaz Ahmad Magray from Kulgam, Owaisi said an inquiry should be conducted to ascertain the circumstances that led to the death.
"There should be an inquiry. I have read the statements of his relatives in the media. An inquiry should be held into the circumstances of his death," the AIMIM chief said.
Residents of a village in Kulgam district found Magray's body on Sunday amid allegations that the deceased was taken away by security forces for questioning in the wake of the Pahalgam incident.
PDP president Mehbooba Mufti, National Conference Lok Sabha member Aga Ruhullah Mehdi and Jammu and Kashmir Minister Sakina Ittoo said there were serious allegations of foul play in the death of Magray, whose body was fished out from the Adbal stream in the Aharbal area of the district.
While Police have launched an investigation to ascertain the exact cause of the death, a drone footage, which surfaced hours after Magray's body was recovered, showed a youth jumping into the gushing Adbal stream and getting washed away.
Police claimed that Magray, who confessed to being an overground worker (OGW) for terrorists, tried to escape while leading security forces to a hideout in a forest area.

NDA govt completes 11 years, releases report on India's transformation
Prime Minister Narendra Modi-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) government marked the completion of its 11 years in office on Monday by unveiling a 176-page 'comprehensive compendium' on India's transformation under the PM's 'visionary leadership' across 14 facets of policymaking, ranging from national security and foreign policy, infrastructure growth, healthcare, women's empowerment and social justice. 'PM Modi has brought the politics of development – Vikasvaad – into the mainstream, making it a focal point around which political discourse and policy action now revolves,' the booklet, released by the government's Press Information Bureau (PIB) on Monday morning, stated. The Modi-led 72-member Union Council of Ministers took oath on 9 June 2024. In the afternoon, addressing a press conference at the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)'s national headquarters in New Delhi, the party's national president J P Nadda, who is also a Union minister, said that proactive governance has been the hallmark of Modi's tenure as prime minister. He said Modi has confronted challenges head-on and taken 'bold decisions' earlier thought impossible, such as the 'abrogation of Article 370', the 2016 surgical strikes, the Balakot air strike and Operation Sindoor of 2025. Is the Indian private sector investing in India? After the bonanza tax cut, nothing has changed. They still lack confidence in economic management to invest,' the Congress leader said. He added that fixed capital formation has dropped to 32.4 per cent, an 11-year low. 'There is another legacy: glaring inequality. The top 1 per cent of people hold 40 per cent of India's wealth, while the bottom 50 per cent have just over 3 per cent,' the former Congress MP said, adding that this is not the economy the country wants.

Booker Prize winner Banu Mushtaq feted in Shivamogga
Leaders of various progressive organisations, activists, elected representatives and officers of Hassan joined hands together here on Monday to felicitate writer and advocate Banu Mushtaq, who recently won the International Booker Prize for her collection of stories, translated into English, Heart Lamp. Baragur Ramachandrappa said the International Booker Prize was an honour to the Kannada's intellect. 'Ms. Mushtaq wrote stories in Kannada, and Deepa Bhasthi translated them into English. Both writers deserve appreciation,' he said. The district enjoys the distinction of contributing the first Kannada inscription found at Halmidi village in Belur taluk and the first International Booker Prize for Kannada. 'Ms. Musthaq wrote stories that she picked from the world around her. The prize she won is recognition of her involvement in struggles for the emancipation of the working class, women, Dalits, and all downtrodden sections. She has been actively involved in the Bandaya movement in the State', he said. Ms. Musthaq said that India is known for diversity, and it was the duty of every individual to uphold this (diversity). 'Literature is one of the forces that celebrates diversity and, with that, it keeps the country united,' she said. The prize, she said, was not only for her contribution to literature. 'I have participated in the protests and struggles for social justice and equality. My writing is not separated from my these activities.
