AI Not A Threat But A Teaching Aid In PR, Say Academics

KUALA LUMPUR, July 7 (Bernama) -- Artificial Intelligence (AI) should be embraced as a supportive tool in public relations (PR) education, but clear guidelines and a structured curriculum are essential to ensure ethical and responsible usage among students.
Head of the Strategic Communication Centre at the Faculty of Communication and Media Studies, Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM) Dr Wan Norbani Wan Noordin said that while AI is definitely a friend in the learning environment, the extent of its integration must be carefully managed through proper education and policy alignment.
"We can't stop students from using AI, but I think you can help them to use it at the proper avenue. Yes, it is definitely a friend, but how much of a friend are we talking?" she said while speaking as a panelist during the session titled AI & PR: Friend or Foe? held in conjunction with the Kuala Lumpur International PR Conference (KLIP 7), themed "Curiosity, Creativity, Clarity", here today.
Other panelists were Associate Prof Dr Nurul'ain Mohd Hasan, a lecturer at the Faculty of Modern Languages and Communication, Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM); Boy Kelana Soebroto from Indonesia; Jennifer Muir from Australia; Fiona Cassidy from New Zealand; Ruby Wan from Hong Kong; Nguyen Khoa My from Vietnam; and Mohamed Ali from Singapore.
Wan Norbani said many students are excited to use AI for idea generation and initial research, but she expressed concern over their limited ability to verify sources despite being in higher education.
She added that although Gen Z and Alpha students are digital native, they still need ethical guidance and practical tools, noting the absence of a standardised AI or AI-and-PR subject, and stressing the need to formally introduce AI into public relations education.
Wan Norbani said digital literacy and ethical values are embedded in most PR subjects and noted that students themselves suggested users should be transparent by declaring AI use, highlighting the need for structured education to ensure responsible and mature application.
Meanwhile, Nurul'ain shared that her classroom study showed an 11 per cent improvement in students' understanding of PR concepts after using AI tools, noting that AI does not replace educators but serves as a colleague, research partner, and teaching aid.
"We need to expose students to ethical and responsible use of AI. It's not about full dependence, but thoughtful application," she said, adding that AI should be seen as a valuable tool in PR education, not a threat.

AI mastery essential for progressive society says DPM Fadillah

KUCHING: Mastering artificial intelligence (AI) is no longer optional but essential for building a progressive, inclusive, and competitive society, said Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof. Fadillah, who is also the Member of Parliament for Petra Jaya, said in today's fast-evolving digital landscape, enhancing digital skills is a shared responsibility that benefits individuals, families, and the wider community. 'Learning has no age limit. As long as we are able, seeking knowledge is a noble pursuit that benefits not just ourselves, but also those around us. 'In a world that is constantly changing, it is our responsibility to keep improving our skills and adapting to digital transformation,' he said in a Facebook post today. Earlier, Fadillah visited the 'AI for MY Future' training programme held in the Petra Jaya parliamentary constituency at the Centre for Technology Excellence Sarawak (CENTEXS) in Kuching. The programme brought together 150 participants, including 51 community leaders, 33 teachers, and 24 entrepreneurs, and focused on the application of AI in areas such as data analytics, document creation, and digital management and reporting. Fadillah highlighted the value of tools like Microsoft Co-Pilot, especially for community leaders who often work without sufficient administrative support. 'With tools like Microsoft Co-Pilot, they can now carry out their duties more efficiently and professionally – from preparing reports and communication materials to managing data,' he said. He also thanked the organisers and encouraged similar initiatives to be extended to other areas. 'My message to all participants - with the knowledge and understanding of AI and digital transformation, we not only enhance our individual capabilities but also drive meaningful change in our communities,' he added. - Bernama

He said the initiative, held at Centexs Santubong, aims to boost technological skills among grassroots leaders and local communities. 'We're starting with the Petra Jaya area, and if this programme succeeds in terms of training effectiveness and its impact on the community, we'll expand it to other areas throughout Sarawak,' he said after visiting course participants at Centexs Santubong here today. Fadillah said the course is a strategic collaboration between Microsoft and the Petra Jaya Parliamentary Constituency Service Centre, designed to empower community leaders, educators, non-government organisations (NGOs), and rural entrepreneurs through AI. The training includes village chiefs, teachers, and NGO representatives, and focuses on practical applications such as AI-powered correspondence management, data analysis, digital searches, and dashboard creation – tools that support local planning. Participants are also being trained to become trainers in their own communities. While he acknowledged challenges faced by older participants, Fadillah praised their enthusiasm, calling it a promising sign for the programme's sustainability. 'If we can train them well, they can then train others. This will spark a new wave of tech-savvy individuals in rural communities,' he said. Fadillah also underscored the importance of building community databases to identify those in need and deliver more targeted government services. 'With limited financial resources, we must plan wisely. This technology can help us reach those goals,' he said, noting the programme aligns with Sarawak's push toward a digital economy by 2030. Also present during the visit was Centexs CEO Dato Syeed Mohd Hussien Wan Abdul Rahman. community leaders fadillah yusof Kuching Microsoft AI course
