Bolivia policeman killed in clashes with Morales backers

Clashes Wednesday between followers of Bolivian ex-president Evo Morales and police clearing a roadblock left one officer dead and another seriously wounded, the government said. Supporters of Morales, who led the Andean country from 2006 to 2019, began blocking key roads on June 2 over electoral authorities' refusal to allow him to run for a fourth term in August 17 elections. The protests have since snowballed into a wider revolt over President Luis Arce's handling of a deep economic crisis, marked by severe shortages of hard currency and fuel. On Wednesday, "shots were fired, one (officer) lost their life and another is gravely injured" in the town of Llallagua in the country's southwest, said Deputy Interior Minister Jhonny Aguilera. At least 15 civilians and two police officers were injured in a violent confrontation in the same town the previous day between Morales backers blockading roads and residents who tried to force their way through. The national roads authority counted 21 roadblocks across the country Wednesday, down from 29 the day before. Morales, 65, has been barred by the Constitutional Court from seeking re-election but nevertheless attempted, in vain, to register as a candidate last month. The government accuses him of trying to sabotage the election by calling for blockades to sow chaos. The protesters' goal "is to encircle La Paz to force it into submission through hunger," President Arce said Wednesday as he announced a joint police and military operation to clear a major highway, with more to follow. On Monday, the attorney general said Morales was under investigation for "terrorism" for allegedly inciting the protests. - Holed up - Bolivia's first Indigenous president has been holed up in his central stronghold of Chapare since October to avoid arrest on charges of trafficking a minor. The charges relate to Morales's alleged sexual relationship with a 15-year-old with whom he is accused of fathering a child while in office. He denies the charges. Peruvian media said there were also clashes Wednesday between police and Morales fans in Parotani, north of Llallagua. Morales, Bolivia's first Indigenous president and one of Latin America's longest-serving leaders, resigned under a cloud in 2019 after seeking to extend his 13-year grip on power. Since then, the Constitutional Court has upheld Bolivia's two-term limit, which Morales previously managed to evade. He retains a large following in the South American country, particularly among Indigenous communities. jac/mlr/des

CBP: Man charged with illegal entry on train; officials warn of dangers of doing so

EL PASO, Texas (KTSM) – A Mexican national man was recently arrested for attempting to enter the U.S. without inspection on a train via the Union Pacific Railway, and the U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) El Paso Field Office is warning about the dangers of doing so. CBP said that at 6 p.m. on Friday, June 6, anomalies were observed during a nonintrusive inspection via the vehicle and cargo inspection system on a northbound train. A physical inspection led to the discovery and removal of one undocumented migrant concealed in a hollow space at the end of an empty hopper, CBP said. CBP said the undocumented migrant was taken into custody, and records checks revealed that he had a prior immigration arrest and deportation. He was charged with illegal entry after removal. 'Attempting to enter the United States without inspection via a cargo train is not only illegal, but it is also very dangerous,' CBP El Paso Field Office assistant director for border security, Samuel Cleaves, said. 'Aliens attempting to board moving trains sometimes slip and have limbs severed. As temperatures rise above 100 degrees Fahrenheit, the risk of death from heat stroke or dehydration increases. Also, cargo can shift and injure or trap aliens. Finally, when discovered, the alien will face certain consequences for illegally entering the United States under Title 8 of the U.S. Code. It is not worth the risk.' CBP said they apprehended 143 people attempting to enter the U.S. without inspection in FY2024. So far in FY2025, 43 people have been apprehended trying to make illegal entry on trains. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. El Paso man arrested for allegedly shooting dog, donations sought for dog's medical care

An El Paso man arrested on suspicion of animal cruelty allegedly fired a gel blaster gun at his pit bull mix dog while live streaming it on social media, authorities said. Officers arrested Jesus Armando Ortega, 27, on a charge of cruelty to non-livestock animal by killing, poisoning or causing serious bodily injury, El Paso Police Department spokesperson Officer Adrian Cisneros said in a news release. El Paso Animal Services officials reported a video posted on social media to police of a dog, named Spanky, being hit several times with a 'gel blaster' fired from an "Orbeez gun," the news release states. Orbeez guns are toy guns that shoot gel-like beads at high speeds. The El Paso Police Department's Animal Cruelty Investigation Unit investigated the case and identified Ortega as the man in the video, the news release states. More: Fort Bliss soldier charged with animal cruelty after dog found hanging from truck Ortega allegedly went live on social media about 10 p.m. Thursday, June 5, at a home in the 3000 block of George Dieter Drive, and started shooting his dog with the Orbeez gun. The graphic video shows the small white dog hiding in a corner of a kitchen. The shooter is not seen in the video, but is heard saying, "Look these (expletive) hurt, look." He then began shooting at the dog. Spanky survived its injuries. Law N' Paws Animal Rescue and Sanctuary, a nonprofit organization founded by an El Paso police detective, provides foster care for pets in animal abuse cases and has custody of the dog. Spanky suffered "multiple injuries and (is) emotionally shaken," the nonprofit posted on Instagram. They added that Spanky is "underweight, scared, and currently receiving the care he desperately needs at East El Paso Animal Hospital." Ortega was arrested on an animal cruelty charge. He was booked into the El Paso County Jail on Friday, June 6 on a $4,000 bond, jail records show. He posted bail and was released the same day, jail logs show. No attorney is listed in court records for Ortega. The nonprofit is accepting donations from the community for Spanky's medical care.
