Russia says captured three settlements in Ukraine's east

The Hindua day ago
The Russian army said Wednesday (August 20, 2025) it had captured three villages in eastern Ukraine, claiming fresh territorial gains despite U.S.-led peace efforts and a flurry of diplomacy to end the conflict.

Russia's Defence Ministry said on Telegram its troops had "continued to advance deep into the enemy defences" in the embattled Donetsk region, taking the villages of Sukhetske and Pankivka.
They are near a section of the front where the Russian army broke through Ukrainian defences last week, between the logistics hub of Pokrovsk and Kostiantynivka.
In the neighbouring central-eastern Dnipropetrovsk region the Russian army said it had captured the village of Novogeorgiivka.
Moscow's troops first entered the region — previously spared from fighting — in July.
These latest advances come amid accelerated efforts by the U.S. and European leaders to broker a peace deal that would end the offensive, now in its fourth year.
U.S. President Donald Trump said his Russian counterpart, Vladimir Putin, had agreed to meet the Ukrainian leader and accept some Western security guarantees for Kyiv.
These promises were met with caution in European capitals.
According to three sources familiar with a Monday call between Mr. Trump and Mr. Putin, the Russian leader proposed holding the summit with Volodymyr Zelensky in Moscow — an idea rejected by the Ukrainian President.

USAID didn't give $21 million for poll turnout: US embassy to Centre

Representative image NEW DELHI: USAID did not provide funding of $21 million for voter turnout in India between 2014 and 2024, the US embassy has informed the Indian govt, according to a reply by ministry of external affairs in response to a Parliament question. US President Donald Trump had earlier questioned the alleged funding, saying he suspected "they were trying to get someone else elected". MoS for external affairs Kirti Vardhan Singh said that on July 2, 2025, the US embassy shared data that, it said, covered USAID funding in India from 2014 to 2024, including details of implementing partners, objectives and key accomplishments of each activity undertaken. "The embassy also maintains that USAID/India did not receive or provide funding of $21 million for voter turnout in India from fiscal years 2014 to 2024, nor has it implemented any voter turnout-related activities in India," said the minister, in response to a written query in Rajya Sabha. "On July 29, 2025, the US embassy conveyed to MEA that it plans to bring all USAID operations to a close by Aug 15, 2025," he added. The MEA had earlier requested the embassy to urgently furnish details of expenditure incurred on all USAID-assisted/funded projects in India over the last 10 years (other than those being implemented under the seven partnership agreements with Indian govt). MEA also sought a list of NGOs/implementing partners through which such initiatives were executed. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Many Filipinos don't know about this! "Why do we need to spend $21 million on voter turnout in India? I guess they were trying to get somebody else elected. We have got to tell the Indian govt... Because when we hear that Russia spent about $2,000 in our country, it was a big deal. They took some internet ads for $2,000. This is a total breakthrough," Trump had alleged.

Silence & compromise will embolden the bully—Chinese envoy targets US over 50% tariff on India

The comments by the Chinese ambassador come as ties between India and the US have hit a rough patch. US President Donald J. Trump followed the announcement of a 25 percent baseline tariff on Indian goods with a threat to impose a punitive secondary tariff of 25 percent citing New Delhi's continued purchase of Russian oil and defence systems. 'The US has long benefitted from free trade. Now it is using tariffs as a bargaining chip on countries including India … China is against such use of tariffs. Silence and compromise will only embolden the bully. China stands with India,' the Chinese envoy said while speaking at the SCO Summit 2025, hosted by the Chintan Research Foundation (CRF) in New Delhi. New Delhi: The Chinese ambassador to India Xu Feihong Thursday targeted the Trump administration for imposition of 50 percent tariffs on Indian goods, labelling Washington D.C as a 'bully'. Trump is also frustrated over stalled negotiations for a bilateral trade deal between India and the US. The negotiations have stalled due to India's red lines—allowing greater market access for American agricultural and dairy products. Even as ties with the US remain strained, New Delhi and Beijing have moved forward with measures aimed at reducing tensions between them. Ties had cratered in 2020 following the military clashes in eastern Ladakh. It remained tense until Indian Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri on 21 October, 2024, announced that both militaries had reached an agreement to disengage at friction points along the LAC. That agreement paved the way for Prime Minister Narendra Modi to meet Chinese President Xi Jinping on the margins of the BRICS leaders summit in the Russian city of Kazan on 23 October, 2024. India and China have since instituted a number of confidence-building measures including resumption of the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra and issuance of tourist visas to Chinese nationals. Ambassador Xu Thursday welcomed the issuance of visas for Chinese nationals, hoping that it would continue to do so un-impeded, while also calling on India to do more to allow the exchange of academics and expansion of people-to-people ties between the two countries. The Chinese Ambassador also pushed for greater cooperation between India and China to 'stabilise' the region in an increasingly 'unstable' international environment. 'The good relations between our two countries is not targeting any third country. The improvement and development between our two countries are beneficial to the both of us,' said Xu. Adding, 'Because we are important emerging economies—the good relationship between the two countries will be important for the security of this region. China and India should play a leading role under the current international forums.' (Edited by Amrtansh Arora) Also Read: After Doval-Wang talks, India & China agree to go back to 2005 agreement.
