What is LSU baseball's record vs. UCLA? Here's a look at the postseason history
LSU baseball is scheduled to face UCLA on Monday night in Game 8 of the College World Series. The Tigers beat Arkansas on Saturday while UCLA began its CWS with a win over Murray State.
Now, the programs meet with a chance to start the CWS 2-0. 74% of all CWS finals teams begin 2-0, which makes this a key step for capturing the title.
LSU and UCLA don't play often, but this isn't the first meeting. LSU and UCLA have played five times, the first game was in 1988 and the most recent meeting was a 2013 College World Series contest.
The 2013 game was a pitchers' duel with LSU's Aaron Nola facing UCLA's Adam Plutko. Nola pitched eight innings and didn't allow an earned run, but LSU errors proved to be costly and UCLA scored twice for a 2-1 win.
Three years earlier, LSU and UCLA played in the 2010 Los Angeles Regional. UCLA won 6-3. Trevor Bauer got the start for the Bruins in that one.
The postseason history doesn't end there. LSU welcomed UCLA to the Baton Rouge Super Regional in 2000. The Tigers won that series in two games. LSU scored a combined 22 runs vs. a strong Bruins team led by Chase Utley.
In 1988, legendary pitcher Ben McDonald led LSU to a 7-1 win vs. the Bruins. UCLA only managed two hits off the big righty.
LSU leads the all-time series 3-2 and will look to make it 4-2 with a win on Monday.

Aaron Nola rocked for 6 runs by Nationals in return from IL, but Phillies bail him out with 11 runs
Aaron Nola returned to the Philadelphia Phillies' rotation on Sunday after a three-month absence and was greeted rudely by the Washington Nationals. Fortunately, Philadelphia's potent lineup provided plenty of run support in an 11-9 victory. Nola, 32, was roughed up for six runs and seven hits in 2 1/3 innings. He got through his first two innings smoothly, allowing only one hit. However, the Nationals began a hit parade in the third. After Nola struck out Brady House to begin the frame, the next seven Washington batters reached base on three consecutive singles, a walk, another single and two straight doubles. CJ Abrams drove in a run during the barrage, while Daylen Lile and Dylan Crews each got two-RBI hits and José Tena knocked in the Nationals' sixth run of the inning. Just like that, a 6-0 lead for the Phillies was gone. Alec Bohm hit a 3-run homer in the second inning to build that 6-run lead. He also returned to the Philadelphia lineup after missing 26 games, going on the IL with a fractured rib on July 19. Nationals starter Mitchell Parker lasted 1 2/3 innings, giving up five earned runs on four hits and three walks. Washington's lineup took him off the hook for a loss, but couldn't quite match the Phillies' run production on Sunday. Philadelphia regained the lead in the fourth on a 2-run single by left fielder Weston Wilson and Nick Castellanos followed with a solo homer in the sixth. The Phillies added two more runs in the eighth on an RBI single from Bryce Harper and a Harrison Bader sacrifice fly, building an 11-6 lead. The Nationals closed to within two runs in the bottom of the ninth on a 3-run homer from Paul DeJong off Phillies reliever Max Lazar. Lazar left a 94.7 mph fastball in the upper middle of the strike zone and DeJong lifted into the left-field seats. That was followed up by a double by Lile, forcing the Phillies to bring in Jhoan Duran when using their closer didn't seem necessary when the inning began. Lazar allowed four hits in 1 1/3 innings, but Duran got Crews to ground out and struck out pinch-hitter James Wood to end the game. Phillies manager Rob Thomson said he intended to use a 6-man starting staff with Nola's return. However, Zack Wheeler going on the IL with a blood clot near his right shoulder means that will only apply for one turn through the rotation. Nola's performance still has to be a concern. The six runs allowed in 2 1/3 innings increased Nola's ERA to 6.92 this season. Pending the New York Mets' matchup with the Seattle Mariners in Sunday night's MLB Little League Classic, the Phillies (71-53) could build their first-place lead in the NL East back up to six games.

College football season kicks off with thrilling matchups and high stakes
After a long and busy season for college athletics, the football season arrives with a host of tantalizing angles. A look at some of the big games among the top teams, what's at stake and the hurdles that must be cleared on the way to the national championship. When does college football start? A handful of games kick off the season Aug. 23, with the most intriguing a Big 12 matchup between No. 22 Iowa State and No. 17 Kansas State that will take place in Dublin, Ireland. Both teams are considered contenders in their wide-open conference. Kansas State quarterback Avery Johnson threw for a school-record 25 touchdowns last season and ran for seven more. Iowa State played in the conference title game last year. The following weekend has some doozies: No. 9 LSU faces No. 4 Clemson, No. 6 Notre Dame visits No. 10 Miami and defending champion No. 3 Ohio State hosts No. 1 Texas. Before the College Football Playoff expanded to 12 teams last year, a game like that might have been make or break. Now, teams have second chances and can afford three (maybe four) losses and still get in. Who are the favorites? The AP Top 25 and the coaches poll both list Texas as the preseason No. 1 team and the Longhorns are currently the favorite (plus-450, or 9-2 odds) to win the national championship, according to BetMGM Sportsbook. Ohio State is right behind them (plus-525), followed by No. 5 Georgia and No. 2 Penn State (both 7-1) and then Clemson and No. 7 Oregon (both 9-1). Key games to watch Preseason No. 7 Oregon visits No. 2 Penn State on Sept. 27 in a rematch of last season's Big Ten title game. Penn State also has a game against Ohio State on Nov. 1. .... Speaking of the Buckeyes, the national title helped them get over their fourth straight loss to preseason No. 14 Michigan. Alec Bohm homers in his return as the Phillies defeat the Nationals, 11-9
WASHINGTON (AP) — Alec Bohm hit a three-run home run in his return from the injured list, Nick Castellanos also went deep and the Philadelphia Phillies defeated the Washington Nationals 11-9 on Sunday to earn a four-game series split. Right-hander Aaron Nola also returned from the injured list to give up six runs in 2 1/3 innings for the Phillies in his first big league appearance since May 14. NL East-leading Philadelphia had dropped four of its last five games. Paul DeJong hit a three-run homer in the ninth inning for last-place Washington, which fell to 18-36 in day games. Bohm had two hits in his first game since July 18, including a fourth-inning single that chased reliever PJ Poulin (0-1). Castellanos doubled off Orlando Ribalta, and Weston Wilson followed with a two-run single to make it 8-6. Tanner Banks (5-2) pitched 1 2/3 scoreless innings. Jhoan Duran, pitching for the first time since taking a line drive off his ankle Friday, got the last two outs for his 21st save and fifth with the Phillies. Philadelphia scored an unearned run in the first and then capitalized when José Tena's relay for a potential inning-ending double play in the second sailed out of play. The Phillies collected three consecutive singles before Bohm blasted Washington starter Mitchell Parker's last pitch into the visitors' bullpen in left. Parker allowed six runs — five earned — in 1 2/3 innings. Nola retired seven of the first eight batters he faced before the next seven reached safely. His outing ended on Tena's double to tie it.
