Little-known Netflix comedy 'genuinely laugh out loud funny'

Daily Record05-05-2025
Described as "a bloody good time at the movies", the rom-com has cemented its place as one of the top 20 grossing New Zealand films ever.
Boasting a robust 89 per cent review score on Rotten Tomatoes, New Zealand romantic-comedy The Breaker Upperers opened to high acclaim and smashing box-office numbers when it released back in 2018.
Written, directed by, and starring Jackie van Beek and Madeleine Sami, the rom-com grossed over $1.7 million at the New Zealand box-office, swiftly becoming the best-performing New Zealand film of 2018. It has also cemented its place as one of the top 20 grossing New Zealand films ever.

Streaming on Netflix, the film was produced by Taika Waititi and follows two cynical-about-love friends, Jen and Mel, who run an Auckland Agency which does the dirty work for people to help them break up with their partners using hilariously contrived and unorthodox methods.

In an interview about the film with Guardian Australia, Madeleine Sami and Jackie van Beek explained their thinking going into the film. Van Beek said: 'We took a premise that is quite morally ambiguous, really, and dark. And then we really worked to make sure the film still made the audience feel warm and empowered – not grim and despondent. We pushed it toward generosity and friendship, we worked away from the darkness.'
Sami added: 'It's not an anti-romantic-comedy at all, because we still love the cheesiness of romantic films. But we did want to f*** with some of the tropes. And New Zealandify it as well.
"You couldn't end The Breaker Upperers with a double church wedding, because people would go, 'Oh, that's a bit sappy, that's a bit much, mate.''
Critics had mostly great things to say about the movie, with one saying: 'Directors, writers and stars Jackie van Beek and Madeline Sami still give this film a wild energy that's absolutely their own, with jokes that take the audience from giggles to cackles to all-out shrieks.'
Another critical review of the movie said: 'The Breaker Upperers is packed full of that awkward, dry-as-a-desert Kiwi wit - the unmistakable rhythm of a bloody good time at the movies.'

One critic wrote: 'The film manages to be several different comedic plots at the same time; odd couple pairing, screwball antics, quirky romance making it comedic gold that isn't present in it's Hollywood and even indie comparatives.'
While one review called it 'hilarious, genuinely laugh-out-loud and even funnier on repeat', another critic said: 'Laugh a minute romp about female friendship, The Breaker Upperers is witty, sharp and contains numerous dance sequences you're unlikely to ever forget'
Audience reviews echoed the positive sentiment, with one review that said: 'Totally surreal! Love when characters behave like that. Also, it's rare to see this type of film in times where all screenplays are the same. 5star!'
Another viewer wrote: 'Feel good and incredibly funny, the Breaker Upperers tells a touching and relatable story while delivering fast paced jokes, not one of them falling flat.
"Happy/sad tones have become a trademark of the Kiwi film industry, a very welcome change to the 'comedy' movies of Hollywood. I look forward to seeing anything Madeleine Sami and Jackie van Beek do next.'

Mick Jagger, 82, considering another baby with girlfriend, 38, 'if fate allows'

Legendary rocker Mick Jagger is reportedly considering having another baby with his girlfriend. The 82–year–old is currently engaged to former ballerina Melanie Hamrick, 38, and the pair have an eight-year-old son, Deveraux, known as Devi. According to sources close to the couple, however, the pair may be thinking of adding another little one to their small family. The Daily Mail reports that the pair have spoken about having another baby together 'if fate allows'. They claim that the former rock lothario is a late convert to the joys of a monogamous relationship, thanks in part to his advancing age and Melanie's own charms. 'With people of Mick's age, the ability to go off and cheat is disappearing rapidly,' a source told The Mail. 'So all of these old rockers like Rod Stewart and Mick and Ronnie Wood are now settling down.' Apparently, 'Melanie's secret' is that she's the 'smartest' of all his ex-girlfriends. 'Melanie's secret is that she bends like a ballerina to his every wish,' they explained. 'I would say that of all of his girlfriends, she has been the smartest of the lot. As the song goes, she gives him what he needs.' The source added that Melanie 'likes being Mick's girlfriend' and doesn't make demands of him or pressure him to get married because it's not a priority for her. What's more, the pair are 'very compatible' sharing a lot of interests – especially fitness – which makes them a great match. Supposedly, another reason for Melanie's success is the way she's built bridges with The Rolling Stones' singer's exes. Melanie recently attended Mick's birthday, where his former partner of 22 years, Jerry Hall, – and the mother of his four children – was in attendance, along with Luciana Morad, another ex. One of Melanie's friends told the Mail that 'she gets on great with Jerry and with all of the exes' and she's also got to know Mick's kids, who all like her. More Trending That said, the couple do apparently have one no-go area. 'One thing which she never does is talk about his age or about the age gap,' the Mail's source claimed. 'That does not exist as a topic.' Metro has reached out to Mick and Melanie's reps for comment. Got a story? James Bond movie lauded as 'the best ever made' with 92% Rotten Tomatoes score is finally made free to stream in huge win for fans

The James Bond movie that boasts a whopping 92 per cent Rotten Tomatoes score, and is often called 'the best ever made,' has finally become free to steam in a huge win for 007 devotees. The knockout thriller has just landed on ITVX, 13 years on from its 2012 release, for action enthusiasts to enjoy. As well as being a fan-favourite, the film was a hit among critics, and garnered glowing praise for its stellar acting, dialogue and action scenes. It was the third of Daniel Craig 's performances as the British Secret Service agent, and was led by Oscar-winning director Sam Mendes - the brain behind 1917 and American Beauty. It is none other than Skyfall - with stars Javier Bardem, Judi Dench and Ralph Fiennes featuring alongside the titular character. The blockbuster follows Bond as he pursues an assassin through Istanbul, in effort to retrieve a stolen list containing the identities of undercover agents. But when the plan goes disastrously wrong, Chief M, played by the iconic Dame Judi, is moved to take action to protect the organisation. The film immediately made waves in the world of cinema upon its release, bringing in excellent reviews and an impressive 92 per cent score on film rating website Rotten Tomatoes. The espionage drama was nominated for a staggering five Oscars, and went on to claim two of them in the categories of Best Sound Editing and Best Original Song, with the latter presented to Brit singer Adele. Cinephiles are no doubt delighted at the now-free presence of the legendary instalment of the film series. It comes as angry fans slammed the Academy earlier this year for not inviting Adele to sing her own song, Skyfall, at the 97th Oscars. Raye delivered a show-stopping performance on stage, singing Adele's hit, with some begging the star to perform the next Bond song. But other fans were left baffled why the Oscars didn't get Adele, who lives in Los Angeles, to 'come from down the street' and perform her James Bond theme song. Instead, Raye - who skipped the BRITs for the occasion - flew across the pond for the performance. Viewers wrote on X: 'Why not just have Adele sing Skyfall #Oscars', 'NO ONE should sing Skyfall aside from Adele!', 'I like Raye, but this is Adele's song forever. Sorry', 'Amazon couldn't have pulled some strings and had Adele perform during this 007 montage?', 'You're telling me they couldn't get Adele to come sing her own song #Oscars', 'Could we not afford Adele or?! #Oscars', 'I'm sorry but only Adele can really sing Skyfall the way it should be sung #Oscars2025'. Zoe Saldaña shook the controversy surrounding her film Emilia Pérez as she earned Best Supporting Actress at the 2025 Oscars . The film immediately made waves in the world of cinema upon its release, bringing in excellent reviews and an impressive 92 per cent score on film rating website Rotten Tomatoes The 97th Academy Awards - which featured a star-studded red carpet - hit a high as the 46-year-old American actress was crowned for the Netflix film. She triumphed over: Monica Barbaro — A Complete Unknown, Ariana Grande — Wicked, Felicity Jones — The Brutalist, and Isabella Rossellini — Conclave. Zoe became the first ever Oscar winner of Dominican descent and made sure to thank her ancestors for paving the way to have a successful acting career in America. She said: 'My grandmother came to this country in 1961 -- I am a proud child of immigrant parents. With dreams and dignity and hard-working hands, and I am the first American on Dominican origin to accept an academy award, and I know I will not be the last. I hope. 'The fact that I'm getting an award for a role where I got to sing and speak in Spanish, my grandmother, if she were here, she would be so delighted, this is for my grandmother. Thank you so much. Thank you.'
