Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar on Thursday (August 14, 2025) conducted an aerial survey of the flood affected areas of Vaishali, Patna, Begusarai and Munger districts. He also gave necessary instructions to the officials concerned. Nearly 25 lakh people are affected due to floods in ten districts of Bihar.
Mr. Kumar inspected Raghopur Diara of Vaishali district, Kala Diara, Rupas Mahaji, Ramnagar, Kasaha Diara of Patna district and the taal (riverine) area of Mokama, Barh and Fatuha.
He also took stock of the situation by conducting an aerial survey of the flood affected areas of Begusarai and Munger districts.
While giving instructions to the officials during the aerial survey, the Chief Minister said that the Water Resources Department should be fully alert and keep monitoring the water level in the low lying areas continuously.
He also instructed that the District Magistrates of the concerned district should keep a close watch on the situation and engineers should remain alert and senior officials should continue camping at the site.
'The Disaster Management Department should keep monitoring continuously so that the flood affected people do not face any problem. In case of flood, keep providing full assistance to the affected people as per the Standard Operating Procedure (SOP). Do relief and rescue work with full alertness and sensitivity,' Mr. Kumar said after the aerial survey in a press statement.
The Chief Minister asserted that according to the SOP, detailed guidelines have been given to all the districts and related departments, which should be followed strictly.
'Full arrangements should be made like operation of boats, distribution of polythene sheets, availability of relief material, medicines and animal food. Flood shelter, community kitchen and District Emergency Operation Center should remain functional round the clock so that immediate relief can be provided to the people,' Mr. Kumar said.
Chief Minister's Principal Secretary Deepak Kumar and Disaster Management Department's Secretary Dr. Chandrashekhar Singh were present with the CM during the aerial survey.
On Wednesday (August 14, 2025), Mr. Kumar held a high level review meeting with the District Magistrates of all ten districts to get the updates and had given instructions to ensure all help to the people affected due to flood.

No damage to Polavaram upper cofferdam: Officials

VIJAYAWADA: There is no damage to the upper cofferdam of the Polavaram Irrigation Project as projected in a section of media and social media, clarified senior engineers of the Water Resources Department. In a post on X on Saturday, BRS working president KT Rama Rao alleged that the Polavaram cofferdam, part of the national project under the NDA government, had collapsed for the second time. He claimed it sank 7–8 feet over a 10-foot width, and was being repaired covertly on a war footing. He also questioned whether the National Dam Safety Authority was aware of the issue, implying oversight failure. When contacted by TNIE, Polavaram project officials denied any damage to the upper cofferdam, calling the claims grossly misrepresented. They explained that on August 15, the river water level stood at 28.5 metres, while the cofferdam's top stands at 44 metres. A minor mass slide occurred on a 3-metre by 2-metre section on the downstream side of the cofferdam's top portion, which was unrelated to water flow, according to an official. The affected section was promptly repaired, and vehicle movement on the cofferdam, which doubles as a road, continued without disruption. They emphasised that this minor incident has no bearing on the project works, which are progressing at a brisk pace.

‘Investigate, don't intimidate': Congress on Election Commission press conference

Shortly after the Election Commission held a press conference defending the special intensive revision of electoral rolls in Bihar, the Congress on Sunday asked the poll panel to 'investigate' the allegations raised by Opposition parties and not to 'intimidate' them. Jairam Ramesh, the party general secretary in charge of communications, also claimed that the Election Commission stood ' thoroughly exposed ' for its 'incompetence and blatant partisanship'. He further described as 'laughable' the statement by the Election Commission that it makes no distinction between the ruling party and the Opposition. Earlier in the day, Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar claimed that a deliberate attempt was being made to spread confusion by ignoring the ground reality of the voter roll revision. 'For EC neither anyone is Opposition nor ruling party,' Kumar said. 'There is no discrimination between parties, all are the same.' He also said that no political party had lodged objections so far after the draft roll was published on August 1. Kumar added that the main purpose of the revision exercise was to 'purify' the voter list, adding that it was carried out after receiving several complaints from political parties. However, The Hindu had quoted workers of political parties as saying on August 9 that they had filed several complaints. Party workers had told the newspaper that when they flag the deletion of names of eligible voters through complaints, the electoral registration officers tell them to ask the voters to submit Form 6, which is for the registration of new voters. In a social media post on Sunday, Ramesh asked if the poll panel would fully implement the Supreme Court's Thursday order directing that the list prepared after the revision of voter rolls should be displayed on the websites of the state's district electoral officers and the chief electoral officer. 'It is constitutionally bound to do so,' Ramesh said. 'The nation is waiting and watching.' The Congress leader also alleged that the poll panel had failed to address the concerns raised by Rahul Gandhi and pointed out that the claims made by the leader of the Opposition were based on the Election Commission's data. Today, the Election Commission of India held a press conference. This was the first time this 'new' ECI was speaking directly and not planting through sources. The Election Commission's press conference coincided with the launch of the Congress' 16-day Voter Adhikar Yatra, or a voter rights march, in poll-bound Bihar against alleged fraud during the special intensive revision of electoral rolls. On claims made by Congress leader Rahul Gandhi that his party had found discrepancies in more than one lakh names in the Mahadevapura Assembly segment of the Bangalore Central Lok Sabha constituency, Kumar said that an affidavit would have to be submitted or an apology made to the country. 'There is no third option,' he said. 'If the affidavit is not received within seven days, it means that all these allegations are baseless.' EC facilitating 'vote theft': Rahul Gandhi Rahul Gandhi on Sunday alleged that the poll panel was colluding with the Bharatiya Janata Party to carry out 'vote theft' under the guise of revising electoral rolls in Bihar. He said he was not afraid of Election Commission officials and vowed not to allow the alleged theft of votes. Speaking in Aurangabad at the end of the first day of his voter rights march, Gandhi said that while he was asked to submit an affidavit on his claims about alleged electoral fraud, no such demand had been made of Bharatiya Janata Party leader Anurag Thakur, who made similar allegations in a separate press conference. As part of the exercise, persons whose names were not on the 2003 voter list needed to submit proof of eligibility to vote. The draft voter roll was published on August 1 ahead of the Bihar Assembly polls expected to take place in October or November. The list will be revised by September after the Election Commission assesses objections and claims about the exclusion and inclusion of voters in the draft roll. On Thursday, the Election Commission was directed by the Supreme Court to publish a district-wise list of the 65 lakh Bihar voters whose names were removed from the draft along with the reason for each deletion such as death, migration or double registration. Sharing the list and the reasons for deletions will improve 'voter confidence' in the institution, the court said. The bench said that the documents should be searchable based on the Elector Photo Identity Card numbers. Scroll had reported on August 9 that the Election Commission had replaced the digital draft voter lists in Bihar with scanned images of the voter lists on its official websites. The digital draft lists are machine-readable and easier to analyse for errors and patterns on a large scale. The scanned versions make this process harder. On Saturday, the poll panel said that political parties or individuals who had concerns about electoral rolls prepared in the past should have raised them during the claims and objections period. It did not name any political party or person in the statement. On August 7, Gandhi said that his party had spent six months examining the electoral rolls in Mahadevapura Assembly segment of the Bangalore Central Lok Sabha constituency and found discrepancies in more than one lakh names. He alleged that this was evidence of the poll panel having colluded with the Bharatiya Janata Party. The Election Commission had on Wednesday dismissed Gandhi's allegations as ' false and misleading '.

'List of 65 lakh voters deleted from Bihar rolls uploaded within 56 hours of SC order': CEC Gyanesh Kumar

New Delhi, Aug 17 (ANI): Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Gyanesh Kumar addresses a press conference on Bihar Special Intensive Revision (SIR), at the National Media Centre in New Delhi on Sunday. (ANI Photo/Jitender Gupta) NEW DELHI: Stating that EC has uploaded the list of 65 lakh voters deleted from Bihar's draft electoral roll within 56 hours of SC's directive, CEC Gyanesh Kumar on Sunday exhorted electors and political parties in the state to file their claims and objections in the remaining 15-day timeframe, saying flagging any errors after Sept 1, shall be pointless. Justifying its decision to undertake SIR exercise in Bihar, EC said all the political parties had, for the past two decades, been demanding that imperfections in electoral roll be corrected. "Acting on this demand, EC decided to take up SIR, starting with Bihar," he told a press conference here, while adding that the timeline for SIR in other poll-bound states will be announced "at the appropriate time". Slamming the "vote theft" allegations levelled by opposition parties and their chiefs, EC said the electors, party representatives and booth level officers on the ground are working in a harmonious and transparent manner, endorsing the exercise with their signatures and video testimonials. "It is a matter of concern that endorsements of district presidents and booth level agents of parties are either not reaching their state level and national leadership, or the latter have chosen to overlook these, and are trying to spread misinformation," said Kumar. Clearing the air on timing of SIR, the CEC said that since the annual summary revision was with respect to Jan 1, 2025, April 1 was too early to start the next revision, while Oct 1 would have been too close to the assembly poll due in Bihar in Nov. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like American Investor Warren Buffett Recommends: 5 Books For Turning Your Life Around Blinkist: Warren Buffett's Reading List Undo As regards allegations of hundreds and thousands of voters being registered on the same address, Kumar said in the absence of proper numbering of houses/addresses by the panchayats/municipalities and also the presence of unauthorised settlements, it has been an accepted norm for EC/BLO to register voters from notional addresses, often carrying 'zero' house number. Electoral roll excerpts shared by EC with TOI, of Assam in 1966, Rajasthan in 1980, UP in 1985, show their house number as either missing or as '01'.
