879 youths in Sarawak benefit from TUBE initiative
KUCHING: A total of 879 youths in Sarawak have benefited from the Tunas Usahawan Belia Bumiputera (TUBE) initiative, implemented by the Ministry of Entrepreneur Development and Cooperatives, through SME Corporation Malaysia (SME Corp).
Sarawak Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Awang Tengah Ali Hasan said that TUBE had created over 1,691 job opportunities and generated cumulative sales exceeding RM13.65 million.
'In addition to the TUBE, SME Corp also provides a range of financial and non-financial support for micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs), including initiatives targeted at youth entrepreneurs, to help them start and grow their businesses.
'These include the Tunas-i; the Bumiputera MSMEs Financing Initiative (BMFI) @ BEEP; and the Bumiputera Export Incentives (GEB),' he said during the launch of TUBE 11, here, today.
He added that, to date, a total of 5,055 MSMEs in Sarawak have benefited from these initiatives, with a total assistance value of RM20 million.
He expressed hope that SME Corp would remain committed to driving entrepreneurial initiatives in Sarawak, particularly in areas such as the commercialisation of SCORE 2.0, improving market access, and facilitating international business matching through the Sarawak Connect platform.
Meanwhile, SME Corp, in a statement, said that a total of 61 Bumiputera youths from Sarawak are participating in TUBE 11, which runs from today until May 28.
In addition to offering business start-up grants of up to RM15,000, TUBE is designed to cultivate entrepreneurial spirit and instill resilience, discipline, and leadership among young business owners.
Its latest edition features enhanced content, focused on artificial intelligence (AI), digitalisation and the integration of environmental, social and governance (ESG) principles.
Since its inception in 2014, TUBE has disbursed RM125.84 million in business grants, and trained 8,653 youths nationwide, including RM12.65 million in grants which have benefitted Sarawakian youths.

Chow instructs review of housing discount
GEORGE TOWN: Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow has instructed state Housing Committee chairman Datuk Seri S. Sundarajoo to review the housing discount policy for Indian Muslims, with the aim of expanding it to all buyers. Chow said Sundarajoo could do so in collaboration with developers to ensure the housing discount policy was more inclusive and benefits all segments of society, in line with principles of social justice. "The state government has received various feedback regarding the announcement of a five per cent discount initiative for the Indian Muslim community for the purchase of completed unsold housing units (overhang properties), as announced by Sundarajoo on June 5. "Some of the feedback received and presented stated that such a discount should also be offered to all buyers to revitalise the property sector, particularly the sale of unsold housing units. "In line with this, I have instructed Sundarajoo to review the existing housing discount policy," he said in a statement. Chow said, additionally, the state executive council (exco) would deliberate on this matter and make an appropriate decision for the benefit of all parties involved. Yesterday, Sundarajoo said the offer of a five per cent discount for first-time homebuyers from the Indian Muslim community in Penang does not involve units under the Bumiputera quota and does not affect any existing home ownership policies. The initiative, he said, was part of efforts to expand home ownership opportunities in the open market, particularly for groups with low participation rates, without affecting the rights of other communities. This came after human rights lawyer Rajesh Nagarajan criticised the move. This prompted Penang DAP chairman Steven Sim Chee Keong to discuss the matter with Chow, who then agreed to bring this issue up for review and discussion at the upcoming exco meeting. Sim said it was important for the Penang government to continue upholding the principle of social justice and to ensure the rights of every Malaysian to own a home were protected.

MIRI (June 8): The Barber Takeover 1.0 2025 event, running from June 4 until today at the Miri Visitor Information Centre (VIC), features a free barber workshop designed for youth and individuals interested in pursuing a career in professional hairstyling. Organised by Posh Work in collaboration with Sarawak Bumiputera Entrepreneurs Chamber (DUBS) Miri branch and managed by event coordinator Siti Hawa Sarkawi, the initiative aims to equip participants with both basic and advanced haircutting skills, while also addressing the current shortage of skilled workers in local barbershops. According to Siti Hawa, the workshop offers comprehensive exposure, including modern cutting techniques, hair care, and customer service—all essential skills for those wishing to enter the industry. 'Many young people are interested in this field but don't know where to start. We're providing this platform for free so they can try it out, learn, and be ready to step into the real industry,' she said. In addition to technical training, the programme also plays a role in helping reduce unemployment among local youth.
