Nafe'eh clinches UAE President's Cup in Tunisia
The 32nd edition of the UAE President's Cup Series for Purebred Arabian Horses kicked off with grandeur amid fierce competition in Tunisia on Sunday as Nafe'eh emerged victorious in the opening leg at the Kasr Al Saied racecourse near Tunis. The event, held under the patronage of His Highness Sheikh Mansour bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Vice President, Deputy Prime Minister, and Chairman of the Presidential Court, forms a cornerstone of the UAE's strategic commitment to promoting the legacy and excellence of Arabian horse racing on a global scale.Defying the odds in a dramatic Group 1 showdown, Nafe'eh outpaced a field of 15 elite contenders, stealing the spotlight from a trio of pre-race favourites – Hatim, Las Vegas and Khaddem. The four-year-old stallion – sired by Noresk Al Maury out of Menjadour – delivered a commanding performance, completing the 2,000-metre course in 2:23.03 and finishing two lengths ahead of Las Vegas.Owned by Khaled ben Othman, trained by Aymen Jaberi, and skillfully ridden by jockey Jose Santiago, Nafe'eh secured a significant milestone in what was a history-making race. With a record prize of 500,000 Tunisian dinars – the largest purse in Tunisia's equestrian history – the opening round reaffirmed the Cup's international prestige and growing regional impact. With a total prize pool of more than Dh15 million, this season's prizes are the largest and most valuable in the history of Arabian horse racing. The new season's schedule includes 17 races across 11 European venues, including Russia and Turkiye, along with five Arab venues and one in the US.The opening ceremony and race were attended by dignitaries such as Abdulla bin Touq Al Marri, UAE Minister of Economy; Ezzeddine ben Cheikh, Tunisian Minister of Agriculture, Water Resources and Fisheries; Dr. Eman Al Salami, UAE Ambassador to Tunisia; and Faisal Al Rahmani, Secretary-General of the Higher Organising Committee for the UAE President's Cup Series.Dr. Al Salami hailed the event's success: 'We are proud of the remarkable success of this opening round, which beautifully reflected the UAE's cultural heritage and was warmly received by the Tunisian public and diplomatic guests. 'The accompanying festivities also showcased Tunisia's rich culture and traditions. Each year, this Cup brings tremendous value to Tunisia, and this year's edition has seen even more growth and recognition. The President's Cup reflects a powerful image of soft diplomacy and strengthens bonds of friendship.'Echoing that sentiment, the organising committee's Al Rahmani emphasised the broader vision behind the event: 'The vision of Sheikh Mansour bin Zayed Al Nahyan has led to unprecedented global advancements in Arabian horse racing. We take pride in the strong start and remarkable turnout for this year's edition.'
With Nafe'eh's stunning win setting the tone, the 32nd UAE President's Cup Series is poised for a landmark season.

This Week in Golf: FedEx Cup and LIV Team Championship set to decide season sinners
At this point in the season, almost every week feels pivotal, with major events, qualifications, and exemptions on the line. But this week is particularly significant. The PGA Tour hosts its Tour Championship at East Lake Golf Club in Atlanta. The format has changed, and rightly so, to create a level playing field in determining the champion. No handicaps, no gimmicks, just pure golf. Over the years, the PGA Tour has experimented with formats to craft a grandstand finish, but sometimes the best approach is to simply recognise the player who has dominated the sport. This year, that player is Scottie Scheffler, who boasts five victories, including two Majors. Scheffler leads the FedEx Cup with 7,456 points, far ahead of second-placed Rory McIlroy, a three-time FedEx Cup champion, who has 3,687 points. The top 30 players on the FedEx Cup list are in the field. Notables missing from the season finale include Xander Schauffele, Matt Fitzpatrick, Si Woo Kim, and Rickie Fowler. Meanwhile, the LIV Golf League concludes its season with the three-day Team Championship in Michigan. Last week's Individual Championship in Indianapolis decided relegation and other standings, leaving only the team event to settle. The LIV Golf format has evolved over the years, with finales often trying to strike the right balance. As a fan, however, I believe simplicity is key. This week, the 12th and 13th-ranked teams face off in a Play-In match, with the winners advancing and the losers eliminated. On Friday, the 12 remaining teams compete in six quarter-final matches, and on Saturday, the six winners move on to the semi-finals. The final three teams then battle it out for the championship on Sunday. Saturday and Sunday also feature consolation matches to determine prize money distribution down to 13th place. Play-In, quarter-finals, and semi-finals follow matchplay rules: two individual (1v1) matches per team and one alternate-shot (2v2) contest. Sunday returns to stroke play, where all four scores count. There's no hiding; everyone must bring their best game. As IronHeads GC demonstrated in 2024, even a lower-seeded team can reach the final if they performs at their peak. Another highlight this week: the top six European players for Luke Donald's Team Europe for next month's Ryder Cup will be announced on Sunday night. It promises to be another unforgettable week for golf fans worldwide. Big-ticket events set the stage for tourism growth in the Middle East
According to the ATM Travel Trends report, 50% of industry experts consider leisure events as a key opportunity for the region's tourism growth Experts speaking at ATM 2025 discussed how global sports tournaments, cultural festivals and music events across the region are boosting tourism and economic growth Dubai, United Arab Emirates: 'Big-ticket' events are playing a pivotal role in driving international tourism and accelerating economic growth, according to experts speaking recently at Arabian Travel Market (ATM) 2025. In the GCC alone, the event and exhibition market is expected to reach US$827 million by 2029, growing at a CAGR of 3.94%. Following the global success of mega-events such as the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022 and Expo 2020 Dubai, momentum is building across the region as Saudi Arabia prepares to host the 2034 World Cup. Discussing the evolution and impact of these events, panellists including H.E. Khalid Jassim Al Midfa, Chairman, Sharjah Commerce and Tourism Development Authority; Sebastien Doussin, Senior Vice President - Global Travel Services & Destination Management. Dnata and Noor Ahmad Hamid, CEO, Pacific Asia Travel Association (PATA), shared fascinating insights at ATM 2025, where the events industry was under the spotlight. The panel addressed how big-ticket events – so-called for their high value, cost and impact – have demonstrated their ability to attract millions of international visitors, boost hotel occupancy, stimulate infrastructure growth and generate long-term brand positioning for host destinations. Highlighting the importance of understanding the long-term strategic value of big-ticket events beyond immediate sales, H.E. Khalid Jassim Al Midfa commented: ' Big-ticket events provide a destination with an opportunity to establish brand positioning and exposure in a competitive global environment. These events play a vital role in supporting broader government objectives, but it is essential to invest in the right product for your destination.' Doussin reaffirmed the importance of large-scale events in destination positioning, referencing the growth of the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, the surge of international golfing tournaments throughout the UAE and the launch of NBA events in the capital. Commenting on the impact of technology on events, Doussin said: 'Technology has already changed big-ticket events, especially in terms of distribution and customer experience. All of the ticketing for the FIFA World Cup in Qatar was completely digital through the official event app, offering flexibility and ease of use. Ultimately, technology enables an event to become more seamless, easier and enjoyable.' Meanwhile, Hamid urged the industry to broaden the definition of big-ticket events to include exhibitions, conferences and cultural performances. He referenced Bangkok's weekly concerts, which are mainly K-pop driven, as examples of how live entertainment extends tourist stays. Supporting the panel's observations, the ATM Travel Trends report highlights the rising appeal of live entertainment and sports in influencing travel decisions. Leisure events were outlined as the top opportunity for tourism growth among 50% of industry experts, as consumer demand for in-person and cultural experiences has increased significantly in recent years. The trend of combining traditional leisure and business travel, or 'bleisure', has also accelerated as increased remote working and flexible working visas have enabled more people to live and work overseas. Building on this, business travellers are often extending their stays in destinations, creating a new opportunity in this rapidly expanding sector. The report also highlighted that business events (MICE) are emerging as a significant driver of tourism growth across the Middle East, complementing the region's thriving leisure sector. Global business travel reached a record US$1.4 trillion in 2024 and is projected to rise to US$2 trillion by 2030. The Middle East is well-positioned to capture a growing share of this lucrative market, increasing from approximately 2.5% in 2024 to over 3% by the end of the decade, supported by world-class infrastructure, a strategic location, and an expanding schedule of high-profile events. Danielle Curtis, Exhibition Director ME, Arabian Travel Market, concluded: 'As big-ticket events continue to gain global prominence, their role in shaping the future of tourism, driving economic diversification and enhancing international reputation has never been more evident. The Middle East, with its strategic vision, world-class infrastructure and focus on innovation, is well-positioned to lead the next era of global event tourism.' South Africa: Citrus export estimates revised upward as demand surges
South Africa's citrus industry has revised its 2025 export outlook sharply upward, with 188.2 million cartons now expected to be shipped — a 10% increase on initial projections. The latest figures, released by the Citrus Growers' Association of Southern Africa (CGA), reflect stronger international demand, favourable growing conditions and improved efficiencies across the value chain. The revised outlook includes 29.6 million cartons of Navel oranges, up 11% from the original 26.1 million estimate, while Valencia volumes have risen 4% to 54.5 million cartons. Navel packing has peaked, with Valencia harvesting continuing into September. Sizing has varied, with larger fruit from northern regions and smaller from the south balancing out to match market preferences. Mandarins and lemons exceed expectations Mandarin estimates rose from 44.9 million to 49.3 million cartons, an increase of 9%. The late mandarin types are currently being packed, while Satsuma and Clementine seasons have closed. For lemons, the projection was lifted to 39.6 million cartons following a strong third set and continued global demand. Grapefruit season winds down The grapefruit export season has effectively ended at 15 million cartons, slightly below the original 15.3 million estimate. Despite this, demand was stronger than in 2024, and some markets reported excellent uptake. 'The sector continues to work closely with its partners to ensure steady and stable delivery to all markets. Industry leaders remain focused on delivering a successful season,' said Dr Boitshoko Ntshabele, CGA CEO. He added that while volumes align with the association's long-term growth strategy, market expansion is crucial: "Volumes alone are of course just one metric with which to gauge an industry. Apart from trade turmoil, rising input costs and the EU's continued unscientific and unfair plant health trade barriers are also impacting our growers. "With the projection of 188.2 million cartons for 2025, our industry is on course to achieve our targets. But for jobs to be created out of these volumes, the new citrus must find markets. Therefore, market retention and expansion are essential.' The CGA has set a 2032 target of 260 million cartons annually, with the potential to add 100,000 jobs if markets are secured. Port efficiency and US tariff Paul Hardman, CGA's chief operating officer, noted improved port operations this year: "In general, the ports have been much more efficient in 2025, in part due to added equipment and new management strategies. This has helped get fruit out a little earlier than usual. However, with a larger projected crop, it will be important to keep the fruit moving through the ports swiftly over the next three weeks." On the recent 30% US tariff, Dr Ntshabele said growers managed to speed up shipments ahead of the 7 August deadline: "The Southern Hemisphere's citrus is well passed its peak, and local citrus growers have managed to accelerate shipments to the US ahead of the deadline, which has lessened some of the effects of the tariff on the current season's US exports. "But should a mutually beneficial trade deal not be concluded, our next export season will unfortunately feel the full effect of the tariff. Rural communities could then be hit hard."
