He said the previous rate had posed economic concerns, particularly for Malaysia's semiconductor and electrical and electronics (E&E) sectors, which are key contributors to exports.
"We negotiated for months because the 25 per cent tariff was too high. Alhamdulillah, it has now been reduced to 19 per cent.
"If it had remained at 25 per cent, it would have badly affected our economy, as Malaysia is a hub for semiconductors and E&E in Asia," he said.

KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 3 — The government will restore and elevate the nation's 'pondok' institutions to ensure they remain a bulwark for the faith, morals, and character of the Muslim community, in line with modern demands, said Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim. He stated that this initiative involves cooperation between the Ministry of Finance and the Department of Islamic Development Malaysia (Jakim) to ensure that religious schools and pondok institutions that are in poor condition can be developed with new facilities and technology. 'We want to add new technology, including information technology, digitalisation, and artificial intelligence, so that this bulwark remains the strongest one to defend the faith, morals, and character of the Ummah,' he said at the opening ceremony of the 65th International Al-Quran Recital and Memorisation Competition (MTHQA) at the Kuala Lumpur World Trade Centre (WTCKL) yesterday. Also present were Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Religious Affairs) Datuk Dr Mohd Na'im Mokhtar, Health Minister Datuk Seri Dr Dzulkefly Ahmad, and Chief Secretary to the Government Tan Sri Shamsul Azri Abu Bakar. Anwar said history proves that while the country's political, economic, and educational systems bowed to the colonisers, the pondok institutions remained the last bastion defending the identity of the Muslim community. Additionally, the Prime Minister announced that he will launch the Mushaf Ummah Program on Aug 8 in an effort to expand the dissemination of the Quran and the message of Islam worldwide through official translations into 30 world languages. 'In all my travels around the world - to Peru, Brazil, France, Cambodia, and dozens of other countries in recent years - every time I visit, I bring the Quran along with a translation in that country's language, and we distribute it officially. This, I believe, is a good approach,' he said. This year's 65th MTHQA, running from Aug 2 to 9, 2025, features the theme 'Developing a MADANI Ummah' and brings together 71 participants from 49 countries. Malaysia is represented by four participants: Aiman Ridhwan Mohamad Ramlan from Perak and Wan Sofea Aini Wan Mohd Zahidi from Terengganu for the Recital category, while Muhammad Adib Ahmad Rozaini from Perak and Putri Auni Khadijah Mohd Hanif from Kelantan are in the Memorisation category. Boeing buy a corporate decision, says Tengku Zafrul
PUTRAJAYA: The recent purchase of Boeing aircraft by Malaysia Aviation Group (MAG) is a corporate decision, says Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Abdul Aziz ( pic ). "The purchase of the aircraft was a strategic business decision by MAG and was financed using company funds and not the people's tax money," said the Investment, Trade and Industry Minister. He added in a post on X that the plan to purchase the Boeing aircraft was announced as early as March 2025, well before US President Donald Trump's announcement of elevated tariffs on Malaysian goods. Tengku Zafrul then said that Malaysia's strategy in highlighting major corporate purchases from the United States - including the Boeing order - played a role in ongoing tariff negotiations with Washington. "These purchases helped demonstrate that Malaysia is also a significant buyer of US products, not merely an exporter. We are not buying just because we want to reduce tariffs,' he said. "This approach showed the US that we were also a big buyer of their products, and ultimately convinced them to lower our export tariffs from 25% to 19%," added Tengku Zafrul. He hailed the outcome as a result of "careful consultation" that preserved both national and corporate interests.

Anwar to meet Sabah PKR leaders during visit
KOTA KINABALU: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim will be meeting with Sabah Parti Keadilan Rakyat leaders during his one-day visit here. Anwar, who arrived at the state capital past midnight, will be at a hotel here by 11am for the politics agenda. Anwar is expected to keep tabs with the Sabah Pakatan Harapan's preparation towards facing the upcoming state election. During his visit to Tawau in May, Anwar had said he hoped that Sabah's new government would be made up of Gabungan Rakyat Sabah (GRS)- PH- Barisan Nasional(BN) that is aligned with the unity government. However, he had also given assurance to GRS chairman Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor that he could lead in the discussions with BN. Hajiji had announced last week that GRS would work with PH for the state election but the local-based coalition must dominate most of the 73-state seats. Yesterday, Umno deputy president Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan said BN intended to contest at least one state seat in 25 parliamentary seats in Sabah. Sabah PKR chief Datuk Mustapha Sakmud had also said that PH eyed for 25 or 26 seats. Currently, GRS has 38 state seats; Umno 11 and PH 7. Prior to the political meeting, Anwar will also close the three-day National Farmers, Breeders and Fishermen Day at Sabah International Convention centre here at 9am.
