Why is that dog's picture on a whiskey bottle? Meet Dodger, a hurricane hero

Yahoo21-05-2025

The next time you pick up a bottle of whiskey, it might have a hometown hero on it.
In honor of National Rescue Dog Day on May 20, TINCUP Whiskey is featuring Dodger, a Belgian Malinois who supported relief work in Florida after being rescued and trained to visit disaster sites by the National Disaster Search Dog Foundation (SDF). It's part of the company's new campaign, TINPUP.
"TINCUP and SDF are working together to give Dodger the recognition he deserves as a local hero," the company said in a release, as part of "an often-overlooked group of first responders."
Dodger was born to be a first responder, TINCUP said in an announcement. "At only three months old, Dodger showed strong focus - the perfect fit for rescues!"
Dodger was deployed in October 2024 to help with Hurricane Milton rescue missions, TINCUP said. The powerful storm slammed into the Florida peninsula as a Category 3 hurricane, causing major damage along the west coast.
Milton is estimated to have caused $34.3 billion in damage in the United States, almost all in Florida. The storm was responsible for 15 direct deaths — 13 in Florida and two in Mexico — and 27 indirect deaths in the United States, all in Florida.
Federal cuts: Why volunteer search-and-rescue teams are now in need of rescuing, too
According to the SDF website, Dodger was one of 18 human-dog search teams activated ahead of Hurricane Milton.
Dodger was rescued from the East Bay SPCA in Oakland, California, and proved to be highly intelligent and focused, even as a puppy. He attended SDF training, was paired with first responder handler Adam Schaaf of Lincoln Fire-Rescue and Nebraska Task Force 1 in 2022, and the two were certified by FEMA to deploy on federal missions.
"In October 2024, Adam and Dodger deployed to join their NE-TF1 teammates in North Carolina, where they had been assisting with rescue and recovery efforts following Hurricane Helene," the SDF said. "Adam and Dodger arrived the day before Hurricane Milton was to strike Florida to help the task force reorganize and focus on moving south."
Check your local liquor store. Starting this month, Dodger's picture will be hanging from bottles in Florida stores along with a QR code for more information "spotlighting his heroism," TINCUP said.

Joe Milton III Embracing His New Opportunity with Dallas Cowboys

Joe Milton III Embracing His New Opportunity with Dallas Cowboys originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The Dallas Cowboys traded for quarterback Joe Milton III earlier this offseason with the hope he could develop and serve as backup for franchise quarterback Dak Prescott. Advertisement So far, so good ... as Mike Fisher of reports that the 6-6 second-year prospect with the cannon arm took second-team reps this week at OTAs. As NFL fans know, Milton impressed during his one regular-season appearance with the New England Patriots as a rookie last season. In New England's Week 18 win over the Buffalo Bills this past January, Milton completed 22-of-29 passes for 241 yards and a touchdown while also rushing for a score. "I went in there and did what the play caller and head coach wanted me to do, and that's win the game," Milton said. "I didn't know what was going to happen. It was the last game of the season. I was just going off happy. I went out with a win in my first game ever in the NFL. That's pretty much all I was thinking about, until two months later and boom, I'm here." Advertisement While speaking to reporters on Thursday, the Florida native spoke about 'looking for a fresh start' with the Cowboys after just one season with the Patriots. "It did catch me by surprise," Milton said about the trade. "Was I surprised? Yes. I woke up around 7:00 a.m., woke up to a call and knew I was getting traded. Only thing I did at that moment was thank God. I'm blessed. Coming here was a blessing. I didn't know it was going to be here. My agent said there were multiple teams that called. I didn't know where I was going to end up. I was just thankful to go somewhere." To many in Cowboys Nation, this was less of a surprise, as Dallas' rumored interest was well known. And now that "Bazooka Joe'' is getting to know his way around The Star? He's got four reasons to view the move as a "blessing,'' as he lists 1) the warm weather, 2) an indoor stadium, 3) "It's America's Team!'' and 4) the opportunity to learn from Prescott. Syrian Kurdish commander says group in direct contact with Turkey, open to Israel ties

"We have direct ties, direct channels of communication with Turkey, as well as through mediators, and we hope that these ties are developed," the commander said. The commander of Kurdish forces that control northeast Syria said on Friday that his group is in direct contact with Turkey and that he would be open to improving ties, including by meeting Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan. The public comments represented a significant diplomatic overture by Mazloum Abdi, whose Syrian Democratic Forces fought Turkish troops and Ankara-backed Syrian rebels during Syria's 14-year civil war. Abdi denied accusations that the SDF was in contact with Israel. "People have accused us of this. In this interview, I am saying publicly that we have no ties with Israel," he said. But he said his group supported good ties with Syria's neighbors. When asked if that included Israel, Abdi responded, "with everyone." Turkey has said the main Kurdish group at the core of the SDF is indistinguishable from the militant Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK), which decided earlier this month to disband after 40 years of conflict with Turkey. Abdi told regional broadcaster Shams TV in an interview aired on Friday that his group was in touch with Turkey, without saying how long the communication channels had been open. "We have direct ties, direct channels of communication with Turkey, as well as through mediators, and we hope that these ties are developed," Abdi said. There was no immediate comment from Turkey on Abdi's remarks. He noted his forces and Turkish fighters "fought long wars against each other" but that a temporary truce had brought a halt to those clashes for the last two months. Abdi said he hoped the truce could become permanent. When asked whether he was planning to meet Erdogan, Abdi said he had no current plans to do so but "I am not opposed... We are not in a state of war with Turkey and in the future, ties could be developed between us. We're open to this." The Al-Monitor news website reported on Friday that Turkey had proposed a meeting between Abdi and a top Turkish official, possibly Turkey's foreign minister or its intelligence chief. A Turkish diplomatic source denied the report, saying "the claims about Turkey and our country's authorities" in the story were "not true," without elaborating. In December, Turkey and the SDF agreed on a US-mediated ceasefire after fighting broke out as rebel groups advanced on Damascus and overthrew Bashar al-Assad. Abdi in March signed a deal with Syria's interim President Ahmed al-Sharaa to incorporate the semi-autonomous administration of northeast Syria into the main state institutions based in Damascus. On Thursday, Erdogan accused the SDF of "stalling" implementation of that deal.

Will a Category 5 hurricane make landfall in Florida in 2025? History says that's unlikely

Starting today, June 1 and for the next 182 days (until Nov. 30), Southwest Floridians will paying more attention to the weather forecast, especially with what is happening in the Atlantic Ocean and the Gulf. It's called Hurricane Season. In recent years, because of the number of hurricanes Southwest Florida has had to deal with and the damage caused by those storms, including historic Hurricane Ian in September 2022, it might feel like we must have been hit by a Category 5 hurricane during this run. You could argue the back-to-back hurricanes we had last year (2024) − Helene and Milton − combined added up to a Cat 5, but that's not how it works. More: Hurricane season is almost here. When should I build my hurricane kit, what should I put in it? Hurricane Helene made landfall in Florida's Big Bend region as a Category 4 hurricane on Sept. 26, 2024, with winds of 140 mph. Just 13 days later, Hurricane Milton made landfall in Florida as a Category 3 hurricane. It struck near Siesta Key Oct. 9, 2024. The storm was accompanied by sustained winds of 120 mph. Turn back the clock a couple of years to Sept. 28, 2022 and we had Hurricane Ian, which caused catastrophic to Fort Myers Beach, Sanibel Island and other coastal locations in Southwest Florida. It sure felt and looked like a Category 5 hit here. But officially, Hurricane Ian made landfall in Florida as a Category 4 storm. It was initially a Category 5 storm before weakening to a Category 4 just before landfall at Cayo Costa. Ian had maximum sustained winds of 150 mph. There were more than 140 deaths attributed to Ian. It is possible, but not probable based on past history. Could it happen? Sure. But since records have been kept, it has never happened here, even though with Ian it was right on the edge of being added to the short list. Since the 1900, three Category 5 hurricanes have made landfall in Florida: The 'Labor Day Hurricane' of 1935 The 1935 Labor Day Hurricane is considered the strongest storm ever recorded to make landfall in the U.S., smashing into the Florida Keys on Sept. 2, 1935, with winds of 185 mph. It killed an estimated 409 people. Hurricane Andrew in 1992 On Aug. 24, 1992, Andrew made landfall in South Miami-Dade County with maximum sustained winds of 165 mph. Although 23 deaths were directly attributed to the storm, according to NOAA, "Hurricane Andrew destroyed more than 50,000 homes and caused an estimated $26 billion in damage, making it at the time the most expensive natural disaster in United States history." And the most recent, Hurricane Michael in 2018 Hurricane Michael made landfall in the Florida Panhandle on Oct. 10, 2018, as a Category 5 storm, with maximum sustained winds of 161 mph. According to the National Weather Service: "Wind and storm surge caused catastrophic damage, particularly in the Panama City Beach and Mexico Beach areas. Eight direct fatalities were reported: seven in Florida and one in Georgia. In addition, 43 indirect deaths were attributed to the storm." More: When does hurricane season start in Florida? What to document for insurance now There's only be one. Hurricane Camille in 1969. Camille had sustained winds of more than 170 mph when it hit Mississippi on Aug. 17, 1969. More than 250 people were killed, many in Virginia due to massive flooding the storm brought to that state. Camille tracked north-northwest across the Gulf of Mexico, becoming a Category 5 the day before making landfall.
