Mel Gibson blasts California leaders' ‘incompetence' following Los Angeles riots

Sky News AU13 hours ago

Hollywood star Mel Gibson has slammed California leaders over their handling of the state following the Los Angeles riots.
In a video, Gibson targeted California Governor Gavin Newsom and Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass for allowing the protests to turn violent.
Gibson previously blasted the pair over their handling of the Palisades and Eaton fires that devastated Southern California earlier in the year.
'The Passion of the Christ' director's comments came during his appearance on the 'Arroyo Grande with Raymond Arroyo' podcast.
'Gavin Newsom and Karen Bass have already proven their incompetence and poor leadership during the Los Angeles wildfires,' Gibson said.
'Now, as we experience rampant lawlessness and civil unrest, it's never been more clear. They're unable to respond effectively and responsibly during calamity. Whether it's sheer incompetence or outright malevolence, the reality is stark.'

‘Losing battle': Gavin Newsom's potential bid for US president slammed

Former GOP Congressional candidate Alex Balekian claims California Governor Gavin Newsom is choosing the 'wrong issue' to run on if he decides to make a bid for the US presidency. 'We are just sitting back and letting them hang themselves with this rope,' Mr Balekian told Sky News Australia. 'When you see your elected officials investing this much effort in people who are here illegally ... and not on us, that is simply a losing battle. 'We are just going to sit back and watch them dig their hole deeper.'

Gavin Newsom ‘readying himself' for presidential bid in 2028

Sky News First Edition host Peter Stefanovic says California Governor Gavin Newsom is gearing up for 'another charge' at the US presidency in 2028. 'He has been trying to move his position more to the centre from that progressive flank of the Democrats, by having a podcast and talking to more right-wing figures and taking more conservative stances on social issues,' Mr Stefanovic said. 'I'm pretty sure he is getting himself ready for a run to possibly try and lead the Democrats.'
