2021 Bengal post-poll violence case: CBI charge sheets TMC MLA, two councillors

The Hindua day ago
The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has named one Trinamool Congress MLA, and two councillors in its chargesheet while probing the murder of a Bhartiya Janata Party worker in Kolkata during the 2021 post-poll violence in West Bengal. This comes almost four years after the incident where Abhijit Sarkar, a BJP worker was killed.
TMC MLA Paresh Pal from Beliaghata Constituency and two city councillors Swapan Samaddar (Ward 58) and Papiya Ghosh (Ward 30) have been named in the supplementary chargesheet by CBI who took over the investigation in August 2021 after Calcutta High Court order. The primary investigation was started by Narkeldanga Police Station in Kolkata.
The central agency has named 18 additional people in this chargesheet which was submitted before a court in Sealdah, on June 30.
'During the course of investigation, the State Police (Homicide Squad, Detective Department, Kolkata) filed a chargesheet on 06.08.2021 against 15 accused persons. Subsequently, after taking over the investigation, the CBI filed a supplementary charge sheet on 30.09.2021 before Ld. ACJM, Sealdah, against 20 accused persons, including the 15 previously chargesheet by the State Police. Further investigation was kept open under Section 173(8) IPC,' an official statement from the central agency said on July 2.
CBI officials said they seized multiple CCTV footage during the course of the investigation, questioned eyewitnesses, and the family of the deceased.
BJP worker Avijit Sarkar was killed during post-election violence in Kankurgachhi on May 2, 2021.
A week back, the prime accused in the case Arun Dey was arrested by CBI officials after a tip off. He was on the wanted list of the CBI and a bounty of Rs 50,000 was announced by the officials. CBI officials had stated that Dey actively participated in the murder of Mr Sarkar. Dey was on the run for the last four years.
According to the CBI, 20 people were named in the initial FIR, and charges have been framed against all of them.
'To see the CBI chargesheet after so many years, we feel relief,' BJP MP Sukanta Majumdar said. He also accused that only barbarics can engage in this type of violence which kills someone.
However, TMC spokesperson and former Rajya Sabha MP Kunal Ghosh called fowl. 'This is a politically motivated chargesheet. Right before the 2026 Assembly elections, the CBI filed this under BJP's pressure.
The family of deceased Mr Sarkar said that this is only a partial win. They said until all the accused are arrested, they will not get complete justice.

Garbage piles up on Puducherry streets as new agency struggles with transition

PUDUCHERRY: Uncollected garbage has begun to pile up across parts of Puducherry, as the newly appointed Green Warrior Agency (GWA) grapples with initial hiccups in its citywide waste management operations. The agency took charge from Swachhata Corporation (SWC) on July 1 under the Rs 110-crore Integrated Solid Waste Management (ISWM) project funded by the Swachh Bharat Mission 2.0. Despite promises of improved collection and streamlined services, residents in several localities have reported stagnating waste, especially in inner streets and lanes. Ironically, garbage remained uncleared just a few metres from the Puducherry municipality office on Dumas Street near the police HQ. 'The agency clears garbage only on the main roads, while interior areas are left neglected. The stench is unbearable,' said Independent MLA G Nehru, who led a protest outside the Local Administration Department (LAD) office on Thursday. Nehru said repeated complaints from residents prompted him to intervene. 'We initially tried to meet the municipal commissioner, but he was on leave. The Oulgaret commissioner, who holds additional charge, was at his own office. So, we approached the LAD office directly,' he said. The protest was later withdrawn after authorities assured immediate action. An official admitted the delay was partly due to a backlog left by the outgoing SWC, which purportedly stopped garbage collection in the final days of its contract ending June 30. 'We are clearing the backlog now,' the official said. While GWA has the required vehicles, the agency is currently short of drivers and sanitation workers. Recruitment is under way, including efforts to rehire personnel who previously worked under SWC. 'Door-to-door collection will resume as per the contract terms once staffing is complete,' the official added. The ISWM project aims to replace community bins with decentralised door-to-door collection, segregation, composting, recycling, and biogas generation. The Union Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs has sanctioned a Rs 18.76 crore capital subsidy under the Swachh Bharat Mission 2.0.

Huge blaze breaks out at Katedan rubber factory

Hyderabad: A massive fire broke out at a rubber manufacturing unit in the Katedan industrial area on Thursday. Fortunately, no casualties have been reported. Due to the intensity of the fire, thick plumes of smoke were seen billowing from the building, causing panic among nearby industrial workers. According to fire officials, the fire erupted at a unit involved in producing car mats and other rubber-based products. On receiving the alert, five fire tenders from nearby fire stations rushed to the spot and began firefighting operations. After an hour of firefighting the fire was doused. The official said that a short circuit is suspected to be the cause of the fire. 'When we spoke to the owner, he said there was no one at the factory at the time of the fire accident. So we suspect it could be a short circuit,' he added. The Mailardevpally police, along with Disaster Response Force (DRF) teams, also reached the location to assist in the emergency response. The officials cordoned off the area to prevent any mishaps and ensure the safety of workers and emergency personnel. The exact cause of the fire is yet to be determined and is currently under investigation by fire safety officials. The fire accident has caused an estimated loss of Rs 4-5 lakh. In another incident, following a gas explosion in a refrigerator inside a home, a fire erupted at Rajarajeshwari Nagar, Sanathnagar. The explosion occurred in house belonging to Satyanarayana. The sudden blast triggered intense flames, which quickly spread and gutted all household items inside the house. Upon information, fire tenders rushed to the scene and successfully doused the flames. Fortunately, no one was present inside the house at the time of the incident. Following the incident, local MLA Talasani Srinivas Yadav visited the residence to offer support and consolation to the affected family. The officials are assessing the damage and investigating the exact cause of the refrigerator explosion.

Kin seek fair probe into Irular tribal workers's death in Villupuram

VILLUPURAM: The family of a 28-year-old Irular tribal worker, who allegedly died of electrocution at a private automobile workshop in Villupuram, accepted the body on Wednesday but refused to perform the final rites, demanding a re-autopsy with video documentation and a fair police probe into the incident. The deceased, K Kanniappan, was allegedly electrocuted while using a water gun to clean a motorcycle at the facility on Tuesday night. Employed in the water service section of a private workshop affiliated to TVS Motor Company, Kanniappan had rejoined work last month following a five-month break. According to the bereaved family, the firm attempted to downplay the incident by offering Rs 10,000 as compensation, without taking responsibility for the death or extending support as mandated under labour laws. This enraged the family, who also alleged that the police were initially reluctant to act against the firm. Speaking to TNIE, K Indhu (22), the wife of the deceased, said, 'After we were informed of his death, the body was sent to Mundiyambakkam Government Medical College Hospital. However, instead of a team of doctors, only one doctor conducted the autopsy. We have also submitted a complaint to the police, but no FIR was filed initially.'
