Reinier Jesus to train with Real Madrid's reserve team amidst uncertainty over future

New York Times28-07-2025
Real Madrid midfielder Reinier Jesus will train with the club's reserve team, Real Madrid Castilla, amidst uncertainty over his future at the club.
Reinier joined Madrid in 2020 for €30million (£26.1m; $35.1m) but has never made an appearance for the first team and has had four separate loan spells.

The 23-year-old has attracted interest from clubs in Brazil, including former club Flamengo.
Reinier's contract runs until June 2026, with talks between the club and player's side expected to take place this month to resolve his future. He is not expected to be counted on by Castilla head coach Alvaro Arbeloa this season. Arbeloa took up the role in May after the departure of Raul, who had wanted to keep Reinier ahead of his loan move to Granada last season.
Reinier played in the academies of Vasco de Gama, Botafogo and Fluminense before joining Flamengo in 2014, making his senior debut with the club as a 17-year-old in 2019.
He was subject to interest from Manchester City and other English clubs, as well as Atletico Madrid, though Madrid won the race for his signature in January 2020, paying his €30m release clause. 80 per cent of the fee went to Flamengo, 10 per cent to the player's family and the remaining 10 per cent went to the player's agent.
Reinier signed a six-year contract in the Spanish capital and made three appearances for Castilla, scoring twice. He joined Borussia Dortmund on a two-year loan deal in August 2020, with the German club paying a €5m loan fee. He appeared 39 times for Dortmund, scoring once and providing one assist.
Loan spells at La Liga side Girona in the 2022-23 season and at Italian team Frosinone in 2023-24 followed, before Granada in Spanish second tier in August last year, where he featured in 25 games and provided four assists.
Reinier was capped by Brazil at under-17 level and represented the nation at the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo, winning a gold medal.

Benjamin Sesko: Transfer underway with United set to ignite negotiations

Manchester United are racing towards their goal of signing a proven striker this transfer window. It's already been a busy summer for Man United, with Matheus Cunha, Bryan Mbeumo, and Diego Leon all making their way to Old Trafford. Still, there has been one position in which the club is in desperate need of reinforcements, namely striker. While links with the likes of Victor Osimhen, Viktor Gyokeres, and Liam Delap fell by the wayside, there appears to be one elite goal scorer who United are closing in on a a rapid pace, namely Benjamin Sesko. Target locked in Yesterday, The Peoples Person relayed an update from David Ornstein claiming that United submitted an official bid for Sesko, signalling their concrete interest in bringing the Slovenian to Old Trafford. While Leipzig accepted an offer from fellow bidder Newcastle United, Sesko reportedly favours a move to United. Romano supported this claim, declaring that Sesko only wants to join United. Today, United have stepped up their efforts to get a deal over the line. Negotiations are underway Florian Plettenberg confirmed this morning that United are set to enter talks with RB Leipzig over Sesko's signing. 'New negotiations between RB Leipzig and Manchester United are already scheduled for this morning, aimed at reaching an agreement over Benjamin #Sesko,' Plettenberg posted on X. 'It's not an easy deal, but it's understood that all parties remain optimistic that the transfer to Manchester United will go through.' Jan Aage Fjørtoft confirmed this news, posting on X: 'Today marks a pivotal moment in the Benjamin Šeško transfer saga -the much-anticipated D-Day. All signs now point toward Šeško ending up at Manchester United, although negotiations remain active. Both clubs are currently in Leipzig, engaging in face-to-face talks, trying to persuade all parties involved – with personal contact playing a key role in these final stages.' Esteemed football journalist Fabrizio Romano has also chimed in. 'Manchester United and RB Leipzig, back in talks today for Benjamin Šeško deal to agree on final package,' Romano posted on X. 'Šeško agreed personal terms yesterday and will train separately until deal is done between clubs.' Given these updates, it appears as if it is only a matter of time before United manager Ruben Amorim can add Sesko to his lineup. This will be a welcome signing for a club in desperate need of additional attacking threat, with the new season set to get underway later this month. Frankfurt signs Japan winger Ritsu Doan for its Champions League return

FRANKFURT, Germany (AP) — Eintracht Frankfurt has signed Japanese winger Ritsu Doan to strengthen a squad depleted by the sale of Hugo Ekitiké as it prepares to return to the Champions League. Doan joins on a five-year contract from fellow German club Freiburg, where he was top scorer with 10 goals as the team placed fifth in the Bundesliga. 'I'm very happy and honored to be here,' Doan said in a translated video message to Frankfurt fans. 'I can't wait to play in front of the supporters.' Frankfurt is heading back to the Champions League this season after a third-place Bundesliga finish but will have a new-look attack after striker Ekitiké was sold to Liverpool for a fee of 69 million pounds ($93.5 million). The 27-year-old Doan will be expected to team up with another new signing for Ekitiké's center-forward role, ex-Mainz striker Jonathan Burkardt. Doan won the Dutch Cup with PSV Eindhoven in 2022 and has played 57 games for the Japanese national team. That includes all of its games at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar and a role in securing qualification for next year's World Cup in the United States, Canada and Mexico. Doan could make his Frankfurt debut Aug. 17 in a German Cup game against fifth-tier Engers. Frankfurt's first Bundesliga game of the season is six days later at home to Werder Bremen. ___ AP soccer:
