Rodrigo De Paul excited for opportunity to play alongside Lionel Messi at Inter Miami
'Every time we would meet in the national team, the day-to-day was amazing,' De Paul said through an interpreter, 'but at the end of the day, it ended up being quite short. I also wanted to feel that sensation of playing alongside the best.'
So when Messi joined Inter Miami of Major League Soccer in 2023, De Paul started paying attention. He caught MLS matches when he could — between his busy schedule with then-club Atletico Madrid — and admired what Messi, co-owner David Beckham and Inter Miami were building in South Florida.
Then Beckham approached De Paul with the idea of joining Inter Miami, and the 31-year-old made the choice to be a part of a league that intrigued him.
'It was spectacular to be able to play in Europe in the best leagues in the world,' De Paul said Friday morning at an introductory news conference, one week after he officially signed with Inter Miami on loan. The loan will run through the end of the 2025 MLS season and includes an option to make the transfer permanent through the 2029 season.
De Paul, a World Cup champion with Messi and Argentina and a two-time Copa America winner, said he had a few offers to stay in Europe, but likes the challenge of a transition to MLS and knows a lot will be expected of him.
'I want to learn abut this league,' De Paul said. 'I want to be a part of this growth. … I want to be part of (Inter Miami) and set a precedent so that players don't come here only for the end of their careers. We want players to feel like coming to this club is a commitment to the city and to the fans.'
De Paul made his Inter Miami debut Wednesday in a 2-1 League's Cup win over Liga MX club Atlas. He played the full 90 minutes despite not having formally trained with his new team.
Miami coach Javier Mascherano was impressed with De Paul's effort. He hadn't played in a match since Atletico Madrid exited the Club World Cup about a month ago, but De Paul was active and vocal on the pitch.
'Seeing him do what he did until the final minute is what we hoped to see from a player like him,' Mascherano said after Wednesday's match. 'We want him to be himself here and have that type of effort and level of play rub off on the rest of us as a team.'
De Paul played for Atletico Madrid since 2021 after joining the Spanish club from Udinese, where he played since 2016. De Paul has played in 356 career matches with 45 goals and 56 assists.

The move to Inter Miami gives De Paul and Messi a way to continue building their chemistry as they prepare for next summer's World Cup.
'For me, the most important thing of all is the Argentina national team,' De Paul said, adding that he spoke with his national team manager Lionel Scaloni before joining Inter Miami.
'He told me, 'I know what you can give me on the field. I know who you are,'' De Paul said. ''I'm only going to evaluate what you do on the field. As long as you play and you're feeling well, I know the class of player that you are.' I needed to hear those words.'

Thomas Müller could go anywhere he wanted in MLS. He's a big enough deal that the league would have figured out a way to make any landing spot happen for him. With that history, you get the feeling that Müller is the type who wouldn't want to be a part of something that might be messy. He and his camp would have certainly done their due diligence. And the fact that these marquee players help the gate throughout the league makes it imperative for the MLS to do its best to put him a good situation. The MLS needs more of these additions. The Whitecaps do, of course, remain up for sale. There were as well potshots back and forth between MLS commissioner Don Garber and officials from B.C. Place about the Whitecaps' lease agreement at the downtown dome, and the Whitecaps haven't backed away from wanting their own new stadium, with their sights set on Hastings Park. Whitecaps CEO Axel Schuster has been adamant since it was announced that the team was looking to sell that the goal is to keep the team in Vancouver. Schuster's never wavered from that. Manuel Veth of Transfermarkt, who's been front and centre in coverage of Müller coming to the Whitecaps , told Global B.C. on the weekend that there were teams from all the globe interested in adding Müller. Veth said that Vancouver as a city, plus the success of the team this season and the connection Müller was able to create with Schuster — who's also German — were keys in Müller wanting to come to the Whitecaps. For the remainder of the season, there are reports he'll make $687,000 US, and then $6.8 million US next season. The Whitecaps' lease for B.C. Place is up at end of this season. Garber's comments at the recent MLS All-Star Game in Austin, Texas — 'We have no plans to move the Vancouver Whitecaps. But right now they don't have a viable stadium situation and they need one,' Garber told reporters — feels like him trying to up the temperature on any negotiations in that regard and put public pressure on PavCo, the Crown corporation that runs the B.C. Place . Even if the Whitecaps can make a stadium work at Hastings Park, it's going to take time to build, and they're going to need a place to play until then. ' Vancouver Whitecaps FC can confirm that discussions with the City of Vancouver regarding potential stadium development at the PNE fairgrounds site are progressing, ' a recent team statement said. ' While the club is taking all necessary action to keep moving this process forward, it is a complex undertaking that can take considerable time. Our objective is to continue to move the project forward as quickly as possible, working with the city, the province, and MLS. ' The Whitecaps (13-5-6) are second in the Western Conference, one point behind San Diego FC (14-7-4) with a game in hand. We'll see what Müller brings when he eventually enters the lineup. We'll see, too, what he brings to the team in regards to a boost in attendance. The Whitecaps sit 20th in the 30-team league according to Transfermarkt, averaging 19,295 fans per game. Inter Miami said in a release that Messi's medical clearance will depend on how he responds to treatment. Messi slapped his hand against the ground in frustration after the fall, which happened in the first 10 minutes of Saturday's match. He walked slowly toward the Inter Miami bench before sitting down on the pitch. Trainers came out and worked on his right upper thigh area for a couple of minutes before he subbed out for Federico Redondo in the 11th. He then immediately walked to the locker room. Toronto FC gets US$100,000 in general allocation money from Los Angeles FC
Los Angeles FC has signed Scottish defender Ryan Porteous from England's Watford with Toronto FC earning US$100,000 in 2025 general allocation money in the transaction. LAFC sent the allocation money to TFC because the Canadian club held Porteous' Major League Soccer discovery priority rights. MLS rules allow each club to have up to five players not yet under contract to MLS teams on their discovery list. Such players can be removed or added to their list at any time. The 26-year-old Porteous signed with LAFC through 2028 with an option for the 2029 season. The Scottish international spent the last five months on loan to Preston North End of England's second-tier Championship. 'We're excited to welcome Ryan to LAFC. He brings competitiveness, leadership qualities, and the type of mentality we value at this club,' LAFC co-president and GM John Thorrington said in a statement. 'His experience at both the international and club level, along with his defensive intensity and ability to play out of the back, will be a great addition to our group as we push toward our goals this season.'
