Superstar of Philippine cinema Nora Aunor dies at 71
Nora Aunor, the Philippines' one and only Superstar and National Artist for Film and Broadcast Arts, has passed away. She was 71.
Her son Ian de Leon confirmed the news Tuesday night through a heartfelt message on Facebook: 'With deep sorrow and heavy hearts, we share the passing of our beloved mother, Nora C. Villamayor 'Nora Aunor' who left us today, April 16, 2025 at the age of 71. She was the heart of our family — a source of unconditional love, strength, and warmth. Her kindness, wisdom, and beautiful spirit touched everyone who knew her. She will be missed beyond words and remembered forever.' Details about her wake and funeral will be announced Wednesday.
Born Nora Cabaltera Villamayor on May 21, 1953 in Iriga, Camarines Sur, Aunor became a household name after winning Tawag ng Tanghalan in 1967. From there, she built a career that spanned decades, breaking barriers and redefining what it meant to be a leading woman in Philippine cinema. Her unmistakable voice and magnetic screen presence earned her countless awards—both in the Philippines and internationally.
Among her most iconic roles were in Himala (1982), Bulaklak sa City Jail (1984), and The Flor Contemplacion Story (1995), which won her Best Actress at the 19th Cairo International Film Festival. In 1990, she achieved a rare 'grand slam' win for Best Actress for Andrea, Paano ba ang Maging Isang Ina? , sweeping five major award-giving bodies.
In 2022, she was proclaimed National Artist for Film and Broadcast Arts, recognized by the National Commission for Culture and the Arts for a body of work 'exceeded only by the number of awards and citations she has received.'
Aunor briefly entered the political arena. She filed her candidacy under the NORAA Party-list in 2021 and later joined the People's Champ Guardians Party-list as its second nominee for the 2025 midterm elections. Earlier this year, however, she withdrew from the race, saying she had already submitted her withdrawal to both the Commission on Elections and the party-list office.
She was married to actor Christopher de Leon in 1975. They had one biological son, Ian, and adopted four children: Lotlot, Matet, Kiko, and Kenneth. Their marriage was annulled in 1996.
Her passing marks the end of an era. Aunor's voice, talent, and legacy will remain unmatched—a timeless symbol of excellence in Philippine arts and culture.

Marcos, Office of the President paid Nora Aunor's hospital bills, other expenses
President Ferdinand 'Bongbong' Marcos Jr. and the Office of the President covered the hospital expenses and other debts of National Artist for Film and Broadcast Arts Nora Aunor, a senior Palace official confirmed. Presidential Communications Office (PCO) Senior Undersecretary Analisa 'Ana' Puod clarified to reporters that it was not the Philippine Charity Sweepstakes Office (PCSO) that paid the bills. 'It was the Office of the President and President Marcos himself,' Puod said. She added that aside from Aunor's hospital bill, other debts and expenses were also settled using the President's personal funds. Puod explained that while Aunor was entitled to hospitalization benefits as a National Artist, the cost of her stay at a private hospital exceeded what the standard benefits could cover. 'On top of the hospitalization benefits, the President and First Lady Liza Araneta Marcos personally provided additional financial assistance,' Puod said. The exact amount covered was not disclosed. Nora Aunor passes away after medical procedure, son clarifies circumstances of her death
Philippine Superstar and National Artist for Film Nora Aunor has passed away, her son Ian De Leon confirmed. In an interview with the media at Heritage Park in Taguig, De Leon clarified that his mother did not pass away during a medical procedure, but after a series of complications following it. He did not disclose her specific illness. 'She was being operated on, and after that, she had a hard time breathing. Eventually, things went downhill. That's why they had to do another procedure,' he shared. De Leon, joined by his siblings Lotlot, Matet, and Kenneth, thanked the Filipino public for the love and support they have shown their mother throughout her life. He said Nora passed peacefully, 'surrounded by those who love her the most.' 'We are profoundly grateful to everyone who has reached out with love, prayers, and condolences. Your messages are a powerful testament to how deeply she was cherished, not just by us, but by an entire nation,' he said. 'Thank you for honoring her life, her work, and the lasting mark she leaves behind.' The first night of Aunor's wake was attended by close friends and family, including Vilma Santos, Boots Anson-Roa, Senator Robin Padilla, and Nadia Montenegro. Fans-turned-friends Gie Tamayo and Tess Ocampo also came to pay their respects. Tamayo recalled her devotion to the Superstar from a young age. 'Napaka-humble. Napakabait po niya sa mga fans. Hindi niya tinuring na fans kundi pamilya,' she said. She also shared that the last time she saw Aunor was on March 26, when the actress allowed them to enter her room to meet her sister, a balikbayan and longtime fan. 'Dun niya kami pinapasok kasi nahihiya siya sa kapatid ko na balikbayan… fan niya rin na hindi niya maharap,' Tamayo said. Nora Aunor was 71. She was named National Artist for Film and Broadcast Arts in 2022 and was widely known for her iconic roles in 'Himala,' 'Bona,' and 'Minsa'y Isang Gamu-Gamo.'
