Sofronio Vasquez working on EP with Michael Buble, Paul Anka, David Foster
Sofronio Vasquez, the humble and talented first Filipino and Asian to win the coveted "The Voice" singing contest on Season 26, continues to enjoy his winning streak. After a recent sold-out concert in New York City at the prestigious The Town Hall, the former Tawag ng Tanghalan contestant from Ozamiz, Misamis Occidental in Northern Mindanao is now working with his dream team on a project—Michael Bublé (his "The Voice" coach), music icons David Foster and Paul Anka, and sound engineer Jorge Vivo. After a recent meeting at Beverly Hills with the music legends, Sofronio is still pinching himself. He told us in an email interview, "Thankful is an understatement. Being inside the same studio with them, the music legends, is a dream come true. If you asked me five years ago if I would believe that the same moment happens, I surely will say no. I guess this is what patience and perseverance bring me." Contributed photo Born to Aida Parojinog and Oniol Vasquez, Sofronio said that he and the music legends, his new buddies, are preparing for his EP (Extended Play), which features his collaboration with each artist and sound engineer Jorge Vivo. Now, Sofronio is bringing his musical magic to Los Angeles when he performs at the Pasadena Civic Auditorium on October 11. He revealed, "Performing at the Pasadena Civic Auditorium feels like a dream coming full circle. It's my first major solo concert in Los Angeles since winning The Voice, and to do it in such a historic venue, with nearly 3,000 people… that's overwhelming in the most beautiful way. I'm looking forward to sharing this moment with everyone who's supported me—from day one, and from around the world. This show feels like a heartfelt thank you to all of them." So, what excites him about having his own concert in a venue where icons like Ella Fitzgerald, Luciano Pavarotti, Stevie Wonder, Josh Groban and Michael Jackson have performed, we asked. "It gives me chills just thinking about it," he candidly replied. "These legends changed music forever. Knowing I'll be standing on the same stage where Michael Jackson debuted the Moonwalk, or where Pavarotti once sang. To think this is happening to me, performing at the Pasadena Civic Auditorium is humbling beyond words. I don't take that lightly. It inspires me to give my absolute best and pour my heart into every note." Sofronio, who won $100,000 and a record deal with Universal Music Group, advises his young followers to "never stop dreaming and not be afraid to fail because there is always room for learning and improvement." Contributed photo His visionary producers who brought him to New York and now to Los Angeles are Zelle Ochoco-DeVilbiss and Dr. Jerry Dayao. Ochoco-DeVilbiss, the founder and CEO of GodZella International, and Dr. Dayao, the founder of Overture25 Productions, combined forces and with their shared vision, the two friends who believed in the extraordinary talent of Sofronio after his historic victory on NBC's "The Voice," believed that such a talent should be shared globally and enjoy world-class production that he truly deserves. They said, "This partnership represents more than just concert production—it's about showcasing the Filipino community to the world, bringing inclusion, and breaking cultural barriers in the entertainment industry." They added, "Together, GodZella International and Overture25 Productions combine strategic vision, operational excellence, and a deep commitment to creating transformative concert experiences that celebrate breakthrough achievements, honor cultural heritage, and empower artists to reach their full potential before global audiences, creating cultural moments that inspire, influence, and elevate artistic excellence to new heights." —MGP, GMA Integrated News

Superstar of Philippine cinema Nora Aunor dies at 71
Nora Aunor, the Philippines' one and only Superstar and National Artist for Film and Broadcast Arts, has passed away. She was 71. Her son Ian de Leon confirmed the news Tuesday night through a heartfelt message on Facebook: 'With deep sorrow and heavy hearts, we share the passing of our beloved mother, Nora C. Villamayor 'Nora Aunor' who left us today, April 16, 2025 at the age of 71. She was the heart of our family — a source of unconditional love, strength, and warmth. Born Nora Cabaltera Villamayor on May 21, 1953 in Iriga, Camarines Sur, Aunor became a household name after winning Tawag ng Tanghalan in 1967. From there, she built a career that spanned decades, breaking barriers and redefining what it meant to be a leading woman in Philippine cinema. Her unmistakable voice and magnetic screen presence earned her countless awards—both in the Philippines and internationally. Among her most iconic roles were in Himala (1982), Bulaklak sa City Jail (1984), and The Flor Contemplacion Story (1995), which won her Best Actress at the 19th Cairo International Film Festival. In 1990, she achieved a rare 'grand slam' win for Best Actress for Andrea, Paano ba ang Maging Isang Ina? , sweeping five major award-giving bodies. In 2022, she was proclaimed National Artist for Film and Broadcast Arts, recognized by the National Commission for Culture and the Arts for a body of work 'exceeded only by the number of awards and citations she has received.' Aunor briefly entered the political arena. She filed her candidacy under the NORAA Party-list in 2021 and later joined the People's Champ Guardians Party-list as its second nominee for the 2025 midterm elections. Earlier this year, however, she withdrew from the race, saying she had already submitted her withdrawal to both the Commission on Elections and the party-list office. She was married to actor Christopher de Leon in 1975. They had one biological son, Ian, and adopted four children: Lotlot, Matet, Kiko, and Kenneth. Their marriage was annulled in 1996. Her passing marks the end of an era. Aunor's voice, talent, and legacy will remain unmatched—a timeless symbol of excellence in Philippine arts and culture.
