Amid disruption over vote rigging allegations, Lok Sabha adjourned for the day
New Delhi, Aug 18 (UNI) Lok Sabha witnessed repeated disruptions today as Opposition parties raised strong objections and staged protests over alleged vote rigging in ongoing revision in Bihar voters list, forcing multiple adjournments. It eventually led to suspension of proceedings for the remainder of the day post-lunch. The House had to be adjourned twice earlier in the day amid vociferous protests by members of the Congress, Samajwadi Party, DMK and other Opposition parties. As the House reconvened at 2 pm, Speaker Om Birla announced a special discussion on the space programme. However, the Opposition members stormed into the well of the House, raising slogans and displaying placards bearing anti-vote rigging slogans. Amid the din, Deputy Speaker Dilip Saikia assumed the Chair and invited Union Minister of Science and Technology Dr. Jitendra Singh to initiate the discussion. Dr. Singh delivered his statement amid the ongoing commotion. Following the Minister's address, Saikia urged the protesting members to return to their seats and participate in the discussion on the significant subject of India's space advancements. He expressed displeasure over the frequent disruptions and the use of placards and banners in the House, stating that such behaviour was against the decorum of parliamentary proceedings. With the disruption continuing unabated, the Chair adjourned the House till tomorrow. Earlier in the day, the House was adjourned until 2 pm following intense sloganeering over the same issue. When proceedings resumed at noon after the first adjournment, presiding officer Sandhya Ray faced similar protests as Opposition MPs entered the well and raised slogans. Amidst the uproar, essential papers were laid on the table, and two bills — the Indian Institutes of Management (Amendment) Bill, 2025 and the Jan Vishwas (Amendment of Provisions) Bill, 2025 — were reintroduced. The House had convened after the long extended break of five days. The first disruption of the day was witnessed during Question Hour. As soon as proceedings commenced at 11 am, members from the Congress, Samajwadi Party, Trinamool Congress, DMK, and others began raising slogans, alleging vote rigging. Several members carried placards with slogans denouncing the alleged electoral malpractices. Minister of State for Education Jayant Chaudhary, responding to a question during this session, informed the House that land had been allotted by the Bihar government for a new Kendriya Vidyalaya in Gopalganj district and that the relocation process would begin shortly. He also assured that adequate security arrangements were in place at schools and a policy of 'zero tolerance' was being enforced. However, due to escalating noise levels, further responses could not be clearly heard. Speaker Om Birla appealed to the agitating members to return to their seats, stating that such disruptions hindered public welfare. 'If the same energy used in shouting slogans was directed towards raising public issues, the House would function more meaningfully,' he remarked. The Speaker also warned that certain members appeared to be damaging government property during the protest, a move he said would not be tolerated. Citing precedents in various state Assemblies, Mr. Birla cautioned members against any such acts. Following this, the House was first adjourned at 12 noon. UNI AJ RB
