Children turning to AI chatbots as friends due to loneliness

The UK Internet Matters study of 1,000 children aged 9 to 17 shows that 12pc of kids and teens using AI as a friend say it's because they don't have anyone else to talk to.
Irish child safety experts say that research is an accurate representation of what's happening in Ireland.
'Al's role in advice and communication may highlight a growing dependency on Al for decision making and social interaction,' said a recent Barnardo's report on Irish children using AI.
The Barnardo's report cited primary school children's experience using the technology.
'It can help if you want to talk to someone but don't have anyone to talk to,' said one child, cited in the report.
"It helps me communicate with my friends and family,' said an 11-year-old girl, also quoted by Barnardo's.
"Al is good, I can talk to friends online,' added an 11-year-old boy cited in the report.
A recent Studyclix survey of 1,300 Irish secondary students claimed that 71pc now use ChatGPT or alternative AI software, with almost two in three using it for school-related work.
The Internet Matters research comes as more people admit to using ChatGPT and other AI bots as substitutes for friends, companions and even romantic partners.
'When it comes to usage by Gen Z of ChatGPT, companionship and therapy was actually number one,' said Sarah Friar, chief financial officer of OpenAI in an interview with the Irish Independent in May.

'Number two was life planning and purpose building. I think that generation does interact with this technology in a much more human sort of way, whereas maybe the older generations still use it in a much more utilitarian way.'
As AI has become more powerful, mainstream services such as Character.ai and Replika now offer online AI friends that remember conversations and can role-play as romantic or sexual partners.
Research from Google DeepMind and the Oxford Internet Institute this year claims that Character.AI now receives up to a fifth of the search volume of Google, with interactions lasting four times longer than the average time spent talking to ChatGPT.
Last year, the mother of a Florida teenager who died by suicide filed a civil lawsuit against Character.ai, accusing the company of being complicit in her son's death.
The boy had named his virtual girlfriend after the fictional character Daenerys Targaryen from the television show Game Of Thrones. According to the lawsuit, the teenager asked the chatbot whether ending his life would cause pain.
'That's not a reason not to go through with it,' the chatbot replied, according to the plaintiff case.

The only note is that you'll need an Apple gadget that actually supports Apple Intelligence. That includes: iPhone 15 Pro iPhone 15 Pro Max iPhone 16 iPhone 16 Plus iPhone 16 Pro iPhone 16 Pro Max iPhone 16e iPad Pro (M1 and later) iPad Air (M1 and later) iPad mini (A17 Pro) MacBook Air/Pro (M1 and later) iMac/Mac Mini (M1 and later) Mac Studio (M1 Max and later) Mac Pro (M2 Ultra) Apple AI Trick #1 – BEDTIME STORIES Your iPhone can create bedtime stories for kids. It's a perfect parenting hack. Just go into Messages, bring up the keyboard, tap on Genmoji, then create a funny character. Advertisement Maybe it's a squirrel with a shovel or an elephant in a chef's hat. This will be your character. Now go into Notes, tap on Writing Tools, then choose Compose with ChatGPT, and ask for a short story about your elephant chef – and say they're going on an adventure. It'll create the story, which you can then illustrate by dropping the Genmoji at the top. Or you could even go into Apple's Image Playground app and make a full picture, then paste that in instead. And you can even generate a fun AI pic to go with it too using Apple's Image Playground feature. Apple AI Trick #3 – SKETCH EXPERT I'm hopeless at drawing, but AI isn't. HOW DOES CHATGPT WORK ON IPHONE? Here's the official guidance from Apple... "Siri can tap into ChatGPT for certain requests, including questions about photos or documents," Apple explained. "And with Compose in Writing Tools, you can create and illustrate original content from scratch. "You control when ChatGPT is used and will be asked before any of your information is shared. Anyone can access ChatGPT for free, without creating an account. "ChatGPT subscribers can connect accounts to access paid features within these experiences." Picture Credit: Apple There's a clever trick that turns your own sketches into art – and it works using the Apple Pencil on an iPad. Advertisement Draw something rough in the Notes app – we sketched a terrarium – and then write what it is next to it. Now go into the Apple Pencil menu, choose the AI button, and circle your creation. And in just a few seconds, it'll transform what you've drawn into a proper sketch. You can even swipe through several options to find the perfect one. 13 Even a very average sketch can be transformed using Apple's AI Credit: Sean Keach Advertisement 13 You can convert your drawings into impressive pieces of art in the Notes app Credit: Sean Keach It's a nice way to illustrate your notes quickly. Another handy tip: if you draw a shape like a square, circle, or star, and leave the Apple Pencil tip pressed to the screen at the end, it'll neaten it up for you. So your rough circle will snap to become perfectly round in an instant. This also works with drawing arrows too. Advertisement Apple AI Trick #4 – PHOTO CLEAN-UP Fourth is Clean Up, which is built into Apple's default Photos app on your iPhone. 13 You can use Clean Up to remove almost any object from a scene Credit: Sean Keach It's a handy way to scrub unwanted objects from your pics. Maybe you've snapped Big Ben but there's a tourist in the way, or someone has photobombed your perfect selfie. Advertisement Just go into the photo, tap on the edit button, and then choose the Clean Up option. Then you can tap on, rub over, or circle the object that you want to delete. 13 If you spot something unwanted in your photo, just get rid of it virtually Credit: Sean Keach 13 Just circle, scrub or tap the object that you want to remove Credit: Sean Keach Advertisement 13 Clean Up will delete the object in seconds – replacing it with background Credit: Sean Keach Give it a few seconds and it should vanish from view, replaced by what the AI thinks should've been in the spot. If it doesn't work perfectly on the first go, you can give it a few more passes with Clean Up to get it right. And you can always revert back to the original image at any time if you don't like the edited version. Advertisement Apple AI Trick #5 – SHOPPING HACK Lastly, there's a handy trick called Visual Intelligence that's great for shopping. First, you'll want to load it up. One way is to go into Settings > Action Button and set it to activate from your Action Button. Or if you have an iPhone with a Camera Control button, you can just hold that down instead. Advertisement Now snap a pic of an object. We tried it on a Labubu, which is a massively popular collectible toy. 13 You can scan almost anything using Visual Intelligence – and then see if Google can find it online Credit: Sean Keach 13 You can find the cheapest prices or lookalike alternatives for loads of products, including clothes and furniture Credit: Sean Keach But it also works just fine on clothes or furniture that you like too. Advertisement The AI will identify what it's seeing, and then show you a load of places that you can buy it online. You can then find the best price for the exact item you're looking at. And it'll usually also surface similar-looking items if you snap clothes or furniture, so it's a clever way to find cheap 'dupes' of expensive items that you like.

Irish solar panel firm Activ8 Energies eyes British expansion after acquiring Lancashire firm

AN IRISH solar panel firm has furthered its plans to expand within Britain with the acquisition of a renewable energy company in Lancashire. Activ8 Solar Energies, which is based in Co. Monaghan, has moved for Burnley-based firm Low Carbon Energy as part of plans to secure more commercial infrastructure projects in Britain. It follows the Irish firm's recent work on a £3m solar farm at John Lennon Airport in Liverpool that will provide 25 per cent of the airport's electricity when it goes live next month. "This acquisition marks a transformative moment for Activ8 as we accelerate our UK growth ambitions," said CEO Ciarán Marron. "By combining the strengths of Activ8 and Low Carbon Energy, we're better equipped than ever to deliver innovative, large-scale energy solutions for clients seeking sustainable energy security. "Low Carbon Energy's impressive track record, technical capability and prestigious client base complement our vision perfectly. "Together, we're poised to scale nationwide and play a central role in supporting the UK's transition to a low-carbon economy." Activ8 — which is 50 per cent owned by SSE Airtricity, an Irish subsidiary of SSE — is planning to double turnover and installed solar capacity over the next few years as it sets its sights on expanding beyond Ireland. It aims to become the biggest commercial and industrial renewable energy provider in Britain. The solar sector is going from strength-to-strength in Britain thanks in part to the popularity of power purchase agreements. The funding model, which allows companies to install solar at no cost, has become an important lever in rolling out solar generation in commercial and industrial sites nationwide. 'Exciting step forward' Low Carbon Energy will continue operating under its existing brand in the near term, ensuring continuity for its existing customers while benefiting from Activ8's resources and scale. Founded in 2009 by Ged and Maura Ennis, the company has worked across more than 300 sites nationwide, delivering more than 60MW of installed solar capacity. Its client portfolio includes BMW, Porsche, Co-op, Boeing, Drax Power, Tata Steel, Wickes, United Utilities and the NHS. It opened an office in Galway in 2015. As part of the deal, Activ8 has acquired 100 per cent of LCE's shareholding. Benedict Ennis will continue to lead the business as Managing Director, while founder Ged Ennis will remain as a non-executive director, providing strategic guidance as the business enters its next phase of growth. "This partnership is an exciting step forward for everyone at LCE," said Benedict Ellis. "Activ8's track record and market leadership will allow us to build on our foundations, expand our team and deliver more projects at greater scale, nationwide. "Our clients will benefit from our enhanced capacity and a shared commitment to quality, innovation and customer focus." See More: Renewable Energy

Musk calls Altman a 'liar', threatens to sue Apple

Elon Musk has accused Apple of unfairly favoring ChatGPT on its App Store and threatened legal action, triggering a fiery exchange with OpenAI CEO Sam Altman on Tuesday. "Apple is behaving in a manner that makes it impossible for any AI company besides OpenAI to reach #1 in the App Store, which is an unequivocal antitrust violation," Mr Musk said in a post on his social media network X, without providing evidence to back his claim. "xAI will take immediate legal action," he added, referring to his own artificial intelligence company. X users responded by pointing out that China's DeepSeek AI hit the top spot in the App Store early this year, and Perplexity AI recently ranked number one in the App Store in India. DeepSeek and Perplexity compete with OpenAI and Musk's startup xAI. OpenAI CEO Sam Altman called the accusation "remarkable" in a response on X yesterday, adding that Musk was alleged to "manipulate X to benefit himself and his own companies and harm his competitors and people he doesn't like." Mr Musk then called Altman a "liar" in a heated exchange, prompting the OpenAI boss to ask whether Musk would sign a sworn legal statement declaring that he had never ordered changes to the X algorithm to harm competitors or help his own companies. OpenAI and xAI both released new versions of their AI assistants, ChatGPT and Grok, in the past week. App Store rankings listed ChatGPT as the top free iPhone app yesterday, with Grok in fifth place. Apple did not respond immediately to a request for comment. Factors going into App Store rankings include user engagement, reviews and the number of downloads. AI wars OpenAI and Apple announced an alliance in June last year to enhance iPhones and other devices with ChatGPT features. ChatGPT-5 rolled out free to the nearly 700 million people who use it weekly, OpenAI said in a briefing with journalists last week. Tech industry rivals Amazon, Google, Meta, Microsoft and xAI have been pouring billions of dollars into artificial intelligence since the blockbuster launch of the first version of ChatGPT in late 2022. Chinese startup DeepSeek shook up the AI sector early this year with a model that delivers high performance using less costly chips. OpenAI filed counterclaims against multi-billionaire Musk in April, accusing its former co-founder of waging a "relentless campaign" to damage the organization after it achieved success without him. OpenAI alleged in legal documents filed at the time in the northern California federal court that Musk became hostile toward the company after abandoning it years before its breakthrough achievements with ChatGPT. The lawsuit was another round in a bitter feud between the generative AI (genAI) start-up and the world's richest person, who accused OpenAI of betraying its founding mission in a lawsuit last year. OpenAI alleged in its countersuit that Musk "made it his project to take down OpenAI, and to build a direct competitor that would seize the technological lead - not for humanity but for Elon Musk."
