Sun comes out, KMC starts repairing battered roads from VIP Road to Alipore

Kolkata: As the sun came out following rain in the past few days, civic authorities swung into action, repairing battered roads in different parts of the city on Thursday. The Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) commenced road repair works at different spots on a 3 km stretch between Mominpore and Police Training School, including Alipore, taking advantage of the dry weather.
If there was no rain on Thursday night, the civic body would also take up the repairing of the EM Bypass stretches near Hiland Park and Milan Mela grounds, as well as the damaged portions of Gurusaday Road, Ballygunge Circular Road, Gariahat Road, Brabourne Road, and Beadon Street, according to a senior official in the roads department of KMC.
The roads where the civic body undertook the work to repair potholes and craters include Judges Court Road, DL Khan Road, Belvedere Road, New Road, Circular Garden Reach Road, and Senior RT Road.
"We are repairing the craters and potholes that popped up in different parts of the road. If no rain occurs for the time being, we expect that the battered stretches will be repaired within a week," the official said.

Avijit Mukherjee, mayor-in-council member, roads and engineering in KMC, said, "The repairing work is going on in full swing today because we got respite from rain after a long wet spell. The work is being done as per our schedule that gives priority to those roads having higher vehicular traffic."

According to sources, the Kolkata Traffic Police wrote to the KMC, seeking immediate road repairs in and around Esplanade before July 21 (Monday) when CM Mamata Banerjee will lead the Martyr's Day rally. Along with photos and videos, the cops mentioned roads like S N Banerjee Road and Lenin Sarani (work completed), Amherst Street, J L Nehru Road, CR Avenue, Cathedral Road, and Middleton Street in a list sent to the civic body.Traffic cops have also sent to KMC and PWD a list of 408 spots crying for repairs, and the same has been sent to different WhatsApp groups of civic agencies.
"A separate letter is being prepared to seek the help of RVNL to repair DH Road," said an officer.
Traffic cops said that the worst stretches situated in the added areas need to be repaired first. "Multiple breakdowns of cars and two-wheelers due to battered roads hold up traffic. We have shared examples like damaged Bypass stretches leading to breakdowns and traffic jams on Maa flyover," said the officer.
Repair work on VIP Road started around 10 pm on Wednesday and continued till around 6 am on Thursday, even as there was a traffic logjam on the road.
Around 10.30 pm on Wednesday night, all airport-bound vehicles halted before Kaikhali near the Haj building before Hotel O2, while city-bound vehicles were being cleared along the airport-bound flank of VIP Road as many flyers feared missing late-night flights. The tail of the traffic snarl on VIP Road was till Keshtopur flyover, and the one-way flyover at Chinar Park was also chock-a-block.
The movement of trucks further slowed down traffic.
"The PWD is trying its best to make use of the dry spell. We have given night blocks, and the repair work will carry on for the next seven days between 10 pm and 6 am. We realise the motorists are being troubled, but such is the condition of the road that if we don't start the repair works, some major accident will happen," said a senior officer of Bidhannagar city police.
